I hate this car. I will lsoe about 5k if not more trading it in, but im so done.

My transmission is going to blow up, i have the disappearing coolant act, and im fairly confident my mech unit is going as well.

I get the response to this thread, but let's cut the guy a little slack. There's a difference between having to "pay to play" and having multiple serious issues. Also, the implication that now that the cars are cheaper we'll see more of these, is what? People should just be willing top throw thousands and thousands of dollars at stupid issues that Audi should have addressed years ago, and if they can't afford to that's their problem? Even if I could afford to deal with all of the issues the OP is having (and I can), doesn't mean I should, or should be happy about it. The guy's having stupid Audi issues, let the man vent....

Buys 8+ year old German vehicle for 35% of the original cost. Expects it to be 100% reliable. Seems legit..

This 100%. Problems are well noted with early cars. We are going to be seeing this more and more and more as the 10-13s start showing up at local car lots, etc.

Its a 9 year old car, shit will happen. Personal rule of what you should be prepared/able to spend per year on maintenance repairs on used German cars:

Age of car * MSRP * .01 = The amount you should be prepared (not expect) to cover in a given year

    9 * 55,000 * .01 = $4,950

It doesn't mean all old cars are going to be disasters but its good to accept the possibility of that kind of bill before you buy an older car like this, just my .02. Sorry for your problems though. Even being prepared for the cost doesn't make it fun.

For anyone interested in reliability of the S4 by model year... 2010 really was a POS haha. Also, the B7 looks like a rock (0% powertrain failures).... Same 0% failure rate for the B7 RS4... anyone believe that one?

    oh wow... great interesting info

I guess the old adage holds true, never buy the first year of a new model... and when it comes to Audi try to stick with the refresh (b6 vs b7, and to a lesser degree b8 vs b8.5)

No way no how I'd spend 10k in 2 years on a car selling for 50% more. I'd do exactly what the OP did and sell/trade it in.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

Exactly why I traded my 2010 S4. Personally I don’t want any German performance car outside a warranty. Unless it’s a weekend car. I daily drive all mine.

Again, I'm not saying you'd expect that bill every year. Just a rule of thumb that you could have year with high costs. In 2017 I replaced tires, the clutch, and straightened 4 wheels. That plus routine oil/brake fluid changes/spark plugs pushed my to about $3,500 and none of them were even repairs technically, just wear. This year all I did was engine mounts and an oil pressure sensor plus routine fluid changes for about $1k. In the OP's case, yeah the car kind of sounds like a grenade and most people on this forum know the early DSGs are plagued. I'd probably get rid of it too.

Hey, I know it's frustrating. But put the time in to make.sure you know what's wrong before you make any rash decisions. Why do you think your trans is going to blow up. Is it your PCV that you think is causing your problems? If it's just mechatronics repair and PCV, it won't cost you too much!

If you bought it new, you'd have lost a lot more on depreciation alone.

like a friend told me. regardless of the purchase price of the car, you still have repair bills like its a $60k, (or more in the case of other cars). Don't buy a expensive car, that is old for a cheap price and expect to be able to fix it for the same price as a cheap KIA

    A little story for everyone

A close friend of mine purchased a 2012 S4 a couple of years ago. He proceeded to tune the car to stage 2, add exhaust, intake etc. Beat the crap out of the car every chance he could which happened to be daily but was telling me that he was babying the car. Others in our circle were showing me evidence and telling me that he was full of it. As a result he blew the transmission (mech unit) and started to complain about how this was the worst purchase he had ever made blah blah blah. Finally he traded the car in and received garbage money for it because of depreciation and the blown mechatronics unit. Decided to purchase an suv from a Japanese manufacturer so as not to be tempted to drive like a maniac. Shortly there after he destroyed that vehicle as well and now he’s driving a BMW X5 which I saw him the other day pummeling again. Moral of the story (not that OP has done this) if you take care of something for the most part it’ll take care of you as well. I’ve owned my 13’ since new and FYI I’ve owned other Audi models. I’ve always stayed on top of maintenance oil, transmission services etc. and usually all is done prior to manufactures recommendations, not an issue. If anything went it was because of an error of mine or regular wear and tear. If you purchase a vehicle that you know has issues with certain components than expect the problem to happen if you don’t address it ASAP. Too many people out there driving around without a clue and blaming the vehicle when all you have to do is pay attention and be proactive on maintenance and any hints the car might give you that something is up. But than again that’s how a lot of people live their lives as well being clueless and blame others around them for their problems. Over and out from NY, keep up the good work out there

Bottom line, if repairs/maintenance add up to a similar number as the payment on an equivalent new car you're way ahead financially because you're not taking the depreciation hit on top of the costs. Drive it, enjoy it, fix it.

But if the trans fell out of it I'd take the tags off, leave it by the side of the road and stick my thumb out.

Don't blame you for bailing. How many miles and has it been modified? What is the previous owner history?

I have a 2010 and didn’t have a single issue until about 90k. At that point my thermostat went and while I changed that I also changed my water pump. Other than that an AC pressure sensor. Car has been one of the best cars I have ever owned. If you stay on top of maintenance and do work yourself you shouldn’t have many issues. Also if you can’t afford to fix the car you shouldn’t drive it.

If you bought the car used, god knows what your car has been through, you probably should blame those previous owners.
