This is what 7mph does to a B9ís front end...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I though Iíd share that the other day somebody cut me off and slammed their brakes, causing me to veer and hit their RX350ís passenger rear corner... at 7mph. I felt nothing, seemed like simple fender bender, until I got out of the car. Needless to say, the bill is skyrocketing.

Initial damage estimates were at $7500, but upon disassembly, the new bill has risen to $17k in damage, with more to come upon further disassembly.

With new construction techniques, materials, and frame fixtures, these Audiís are extremely fragile, extremely safe, and extremely expensive to remedy damage. Take a look.

Iím curious as to when my insurance will give up and total the car. Being a leased 2018 A4 P+ with MMI/tech (4400 miles), further research shows vehicles with even $15k in damage have been totalled in other parts of the nation.

Thoughts? Reactions? Whatever the outcome, my Audi dealer is already finding me a nice A4 Prestige with the sport package.

Note her (the Lexus driverís) surprise as well... After she said this was her 4th (!!!) accident these past few months.

    Enjoy!

Talking to the techs today, the combination of aluminium/plastic/glue (yes, Audi uses glue to bond structural components on some major support structures) makes for a bendy, sticky mess. It folded as easily as a knife cuts through butter, but was the, ďsoftest,Ē impact Iíve ever been in... But this also means that these cars are designed to be disposable and easily recyclable in the event of scrapping, should it come to that.

Note how the A/C lines are routed through the edge of the bumper, and support beams are sheared. This is a very complex and well engineered vehicle, however with inherent design flaws regarding potential accidental damage. I think this will be very important for those who purchase used B9ís to consider. There is no such thing as a fender bender in one of these, clearly.

Absolutely. When she waved her hands up after impact, I saw her phone in her right hand. She then proceeded to blame the crosswalk officer as liable for the accident she caused. Confusion ensued.

Thanks to Texas insurance laws regarding rear-ending, liability will like fall on my shoulders, too. There needs to be tougher laws or systems to check for these occurrences.

$17k? So far? Damn. I hit a deer in my 911 at 40mph and damage was about $8,500. Hood, fender, driver side radiator, headlight (xenon version)...etc). I thought it was reasonable if not low. But this car? $17k for pretty much the same junk? Kinda wild. But, that's a real-world example of "safety features" in modern vehicles.

It is made like that for pedestrians protection in case you hit one.

Wow! Before I got my B9, I had a Ď12 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. One night hit a deer with a glancing blow off my steel bumper. Only repair needed was a trip to the car wash to clean up. After seeing those pics, I wonder how my current car would have fared.

Sorry for your loss. Accidents suck, and the stress after is worse!

Get a dashcam. I am in DFW as well and I know how bad people suck. I lost my RS6 to an asshat driver.

Headlights and everything on these cars are super expensive. A headlight on my 2014 s6 is north of 7k.. They're also made to crumple nicely when it comes to accidents to protect the passengers in the vehicle so that causes things to need replacing. Just like child seats which were in an accident, need to be replaced even if not damaged

How did pre-sense not prevent this? I witnessed an accident and almost hit the person in front of me as she slammed on her brakes to look, and pre-sense kicked in and stopped me before I could even react......

That SUCKS. Totally agreed about the dash cam. Never had to use any of the footage fortunately, but I know it's there if anything should happen.

Right. At anything below 40mph, presence is supposed to activate and bring the car to a halt. That looks like a LOT of damage for 7mph.
