2011 A4 Low oil pressure at idle.

Hey folks, just trying to figure out some stuff with my A4. I had the oil consumption rebuild done at 104k I am now at 145k and I am running into some problems. I got the car tuned about 2 months ago and shortly after the tune (roughy 2 weeks) I had the dreaded “Low oil pressure shut off engine” . Took it to the shop they checked the pressure with a mechanical gauge and it was at 8psi at warm idle. I was beginning to think the pump was going until they dropped my oil pan and it had small metal flakes in the bottom of the pan. So they pulled the valve cover off and seen the camshafts journals are scored a little bit not bad enough to feel when running your fingers a crossed the journals. I was just wondering if I was to replace the pump and the top end including new camshafts if that would more than likely bump my pressure back up to normal operating psi or if I shouldn’t do anything until I know the bottom end it good and there is no clearances. I already have the new top end and camshafts just haven’t put it in.The car is sitting I have yet to figure out what to do so any input would be greatly appreciated!

Double check your PCV valve diaphragm, its a common issue with our vehicles.

How can I tell if it’s bad have the car running and try to pull the oil cap off ? If so I tried to do that already and it came off

I pull the little dipstick cover and it would have excessive suction. There shouldn't be suction, or that strong.

Yeah I did that as well it was fairly easy to take off. Right now the top end is still apart I have pictures of the scored camshaft journals. I will upload them

That is a chain driven oil pump and journals do wear a bit.. if you cant get your fingernail in the groove it's not an issue. You can check the pump to make sure the nut didn't shear the stud from the pump by pulling lower timing cover. You can check the pump but I haven't seen a huge amount of them fail. I'm not an Audi guru or anything but I've taken my car apart about 5 times. I'm at stage 2 as well.

Yeah I wish I knew a lot more about my car but I’m not at the point where I can do a full rebuild I already have the new top end and camshafts because I thought that would solve the problem with the low oil pressure plus installing a new pump. But! I don’t want to put a new top end on and get every thing put back together and still have the low oil pressure and it will cost me like 10 grand for a dealer to do it. I am stumped at this point honestly ...

I mean, worse comes to worse. Do all of it and it may need a pcv valve.. is it already apart?

Yeah it’s all apart I have the new pump in and the valve cover off still with the camshafts out. I just don’t want my main bearing or rod bearing being shot because I don’t have the time to do the full rebuild. I haven’t heard any noises or loss of power or anything like that but when they did the oil pressure test they said it looks like it’s in the beginning stages of engine failure and I will need a new/used moter of a rebuild

If the low oil pressure light never came on I would have never known something was wrong with it because it’s running great.

No noises you are alright. I can't see a crank causing low pressure. Did you take it to Audi to get looked at?

So you think if I replace top end camshafts oil pump and pcv I should back up and running ?

I don't think camshafts will affect your oil pressure. Unless the pressure ball blew through the cam out of the reverse thread bolt that has the 2 holes in it.. even then, they would only affect variable valve timing under load.

Hmm and for the question earlier if I took it to Audi I called they said they were backed up for two weeks and recommend me taking it to there neighbour dealer which is vw. They are the ones that said it’s in the beginning stages of engine failure and think the there is a possibility the problem is in the bottom end but also the camshaft journal scoring is a problem as well because the top end wasn’t getting enough oil that’s why it scored my journals and camshaft.

Hmm.. kinda hard to believe they think it's an engine causing the issue. Without warning sounds, to me, cam/crank are harder to swallow. In my eyes, oil pump and pcv valve will be your issue. Hard for me to really know without diag myself.

I'm having the same problem. Low pressure at idle. 2011 A4 2.0. 11psi at hot idle, engine temp at 212°. Just wondering if you found a fix?
