Interesting, were the speakers plug and play? I feel like the sound system in my Avant is pretty bad, just all around doesn't sound very good lol. I think I will want to upgrade them and those speakers don't look too expensive?

Also what tricks did you use for aligning the hood? I'm having a hell of a time with my Avant, it seems like the slightest hit to the front of these B8s and the hood is way out of wack. The area they bolt the hinges to seems to be made of tin foil, it's so easy to bend and move. Any advice would be great as it kills me a little inside when I see it and yours seems to fit very good lol.

They weren't plug & play, but the install was easy. I just had to crimp new connectors onto the car (Audi uses a proprietary one) and then solder wires to the speakers. The adapters to actually attach the speakers to the door were simple bolt on. The ones I got were maybe $60 or so and big upgrade over the stock Bang & Olufsen units.

The hood took a lot of patience, they always do. I've done my car and two A7s and it's been a PITA every time. One thing to note is the hinges bend VERY EASILY, I had to replace mine. Due to the nature of the damage on my car I also had to add shims to the passenger side hinge to get the height correct. Other than that, take your time, having three people also makes it a little easier.

Sorry maybe plug and play was the wrong term. I mean once you hook the wires up the speakers work with the stock head unit, etc?

Thanks for the advice on the hood, I'll be giving it another go. I thought I had good hinges but then I found out my donor car was previously wrecked too. But still the hinges seem to be symmetrical.

Yeah, no issues with the speakers and the stock head unit and no changes needed in that regard, once they're wired up you're set!

And yeah with the hood it's a lot of trial and error getting it right. As long as the hood fit properly on your donor car then I would say that the hinges are fine in your case. It's tricky because the smallest adjustment can move the hood significantly

Update time! Started with some fresh oil as well as cabin and air intake filters. Thought about upgrading to a performance drop-in air filter but I already had a new MANN paper filter laying around so I went with that for now.

Went ahead and added some of this Liqui Moly M0S2 Anti-Friction treatment as per the suggestion of @AllroadCorbin and the engine seems to run slightly quieter and smoother. It's not night and day but I noticed it nevertheless. For $5 I'm happy with it. *Not pictured is some BG44k fuel system cleaner I tried. I didn't notice any difference, but I'll assume that just means my fuel system was already pretty clean.

Now onto the fun! I received my JB4 from Burger Tuning making me the very first B8/8.5 to run their piggy back

It's still in BETA so I won't bother posting pics of things that are subject to change regarding install etc. although it was fairly easy to setup. But I'm very excited to help develop this and pioneer something for the platform!

If you have ever wondered how to run a cable through the firewall, the install did involve me running a wire from the cabin connected to the OBDII through the firewall and into the engine bay. Only way I could find in my 6MT car was to remove the ECU which leaves and opening behind the dash to run wires through. If your ECU won't come out, there is a tab on the bottom towards the left that my ECU kept catching on, just reach a flathead in there a push down to free the ECU. Here is the hole with the ECU removed

That's it for now, can't wait to dive into this more with regards to tuning, have some more maintenance in the works too coming up so as always stay tuned.

*Sidenote, I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary from when I started driving the car post rebuilt. 15k miles and I've loved them all, more than I expected honestly. Here's a quick look at some of the stages Emmaline the A4 has gone through...

Got some free LED fog lights the other day an tossed them in. Because the color/temperature is almost identical to that of the headlights you almost can't even tell that they're on at night, but they are a closer match to the DRLs than the stock halogen bulbs were which looks better when the pathway lighting is on. This pic makes the DRLs look yellow for some reason but the difference between the two sets of lights is actually much smaller.

Here are a couple random pics of the ol girl wearing a nice layer of winter smutt haha

Now being that it's not only the new year but the start of my second year driving the car, I wanted to outline some plans I have for it maintenance and modification wise so that hopefully some of you can weigh in! With mods I'm just going to stick to listing performance items, I have a few aesthetic mods planned but those can remain a surprise assuming they pan out.

    Maitenance

XCheck timing Chain Stretch & Replace if Needed- I don't have VCDS or OBDEleven to check the cam phase adaptation so maybe I'll just ask them to check when the car is at the dealership for state inspection. I work there so it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to have them plug it in and see. Every car seems to be different with how long the chains last so I want to know how mine is doing after 72k+ miles to avoid potential catastrophe.

XBrake Fluid Flush- I have the fluid and will do it when I replace my rear pads/rotors. I'm not sure if the system has ever been flushed but on hot days the pedal feels softer so I suspect there is moisture in the system. I think I'll make this a yearly maintenance item.

Drivetrain Fluids- Trans & diff fluid- seems like an inexpensive way to increase longevity of the drivetrain so why not?

XIgnition Coils??- These have been on my mind for a while but the car runs fine so I haven't been fussed to do them. Is it worth doing them now at 72k? reconsidering now that I'm tuned.

Spare Key- I've been procrastinating on this big time, but I have to order another key for this car, I only have the one fob so if something happens to it I'm SOL, a large but unavoidable expense.

    Performance

X FMIC Upgrade- Leaning towards the factory 3.0TDI unit as it's an inexpensive OEM upgrade. Anyone know if it would be prudent to upgrade the intercooler hoses as well to maximize performance? Or am I not leaving anything on the table by keeping the stock hoses?

Transmission Mount Insert- These are dirt cheap and I hear they make a big difference in the shift quality on these 6MT cars

Rear Sway Bar- Seems like it will make the biggest difference in dialing out some of the remaining mid-corner understeer, would upgrade the end links too.

Let me know what you guys think and if there is anything I should add maintenance or performance wise!

So I did a rather unusual mod over the weekend, and installed a CB radio in the A4. Ever since I began reading about the cannonball run and the modern day runs of Alex Roy, Ed Bolian etc. I had thought it would be a cool idea. A buddy of mine has CBs in his cars too so he finally convinced me to bite the bullet. Still need to make a couple tweaks but so far it's been fun listening to truckers and talking to random people haha.

My Cobra receiver is velcroed to the side of the trans tunnel and hardwired into the passenger side fuse box. A clean install was a priority so no wires are really visible, that said it is 100% reversible and can be done so in ~20 minutes if I was so inclined.

The K40 K-30 antenna mounted on the trunk (magnet)

Next up on the docket is doing rear brake pads and rotors along with the fluid flush so I can get my state inspection done. I also started noticing a vibration from the brakes through the pedal when slowing from high speeds. I have a feeling the front rotors are warped (common issue on C7s apparently), which would suck because they have a ton of life left and I'm not interested in spending the money on them haha

With regards to the JB4 tune, we've been working on it a lot and the car is properly quick at the moment. Still making adjustments but I'm thoroughly impressed, check out the 30-60mph thread to see stock vs now and how it compares to some other forum members!

Lastly, I made a youtube video about the car, how it came to be, and how I think it compares to my old BMW, link below please check it out!

So I got around to doing the brakes, they definitely were past due[rolleyes ] They looked okay-ish on the car but after tapping them with a hammer to break them free the surface of the rotor began falling in chunks of rust

Pads were torched too. New vs old

Reassembled with new Akebono Euroceramic pads and Meyle coated rotors. I also did a fluid flush with some ATE fluid, super easy with the help of a powerbleeder

Holy crap, braking performance 100% restored, no more vibrations. Now to get my state inspection taken care of before I get a ticket

So the car passed state inspection with flying colors and I finally got around to checking my timing chain stretch via the intake cam phase adaptation. I picked up OBDEleven and used it to get the reading.

A couple notes on this, the iOS version of the app is useless and is not capable of checking this parameter so an android device is required (I snagged a tablet for $40 from Walmart). Secondly you DO NOT need the Pro version, you might still want to get it for other things, but I got the basic one and it did the trick. If you go basic you can always upgrade to Pro later anyways if you want.

Anyways here is my reading, Car is a 2013 with the CAEB engine and 73,8xx miles.
You're at risk of jumping time once you're around -7 so I'm good for now, especially with the new style tensioner. Thanks to everyone is the timing chain thread for their advice!

Of course I've also spent more time working with Burger Motorsports on the JB4, it seems like the map is pretty dialed in now and my 30-60 time (3.0secs) is on par with APR tuned cars. For reference, stock was 4.46 secs. I get an occasional hesitation so I'm gonna check my spark plug gap this weekend and see if they've moved at all. If so, I'll regap them for now and order plugs next week with a set of R8 coils.

(random pic I took the other night)

Also noticed that my accessory belt makes the slightest bit of noise in the cold, I looked at it a while ago and it seems OK but this spring I'll probably refresh the belt, rollers etc. If I'm not mistaken Audi recommends to check them & replace if needed at 75k. Trying to make sure I cover all the bases to minimize the chance of any surprises later in the year.

Yeah my stickers expired at the end of December so it was only a matter of time before a cop would notice and pull me over haha

And yes, I highly recommend you check it! I'd like to keep this car for quite a while so I didn't want to get hit with the unpleasant surprise of my motor jumping time down the road. Now I can keep an eye on it and make sure I have the money set aside to take care of it when the time comes!

Small update, but today I upgraded to R8 coils and swapped to NGK BKR8EIX Iridium spark plugs which are 1 heat range colder than the BKR7EIX I ran before. I had actually thought this is what I did when I did plugs last year, but I guess I bought the wrong ones last time Considering most of the miles I did on them was with the stock tune it worked out though

Anyways as you can see the old plugs looked good after 13k miles

The gap expanded from ~.028 to ~.032 New plugs were pre-gapped at .028 which is where I left them

Plugs and Red top R8 coils installed

Cars runs slightly smoother than before, I attribute that to the new coil packs rather than the plugs though as the old plugs weren't actually that old. The car continues to run strong and the plan is to get it on the dyno here pretty soon to see what kind of power it's making with the JB4!

Click Here <---There is a link to them on ECS Tuning's website. They'll work on your allroad no problem. If you are already planning on replacing your coilpacks, the R8 versions are a great way to do a small upgrade at the same time without spending extra (in fact they were actually cheaper than stock)

06E905115G was the part number for my sedan. Not sure if they're any different for the Allroad. They're decently priced at FCPEuro.

How do you differentiate R8 version vs just red tops?

The red tops are the R8 coils, if you look in the description of compatible vehicles it lists R8 V8 & V10. These coils are used on many other Audi models as well, not just the R8.

The red ones supposedly provide a stronger spark/extra durability which helps when tuned. For those reason they have been considered a basic supporting mod when you get tuned, by many people on the forums for quite some time.

However, there is very little on paper data showing exactly what you gain quantitatively in numbers, if anything at all. I was already replacing my coils, these were OEM, cheaper than stock, and offer a possible improvement so I picked them up. If you just got new black top coils, or your car is low miles on the stock coils don't bother switching. I just got them because I was already buying coil packs regardless

I have 67K on my car. Still have stock coils but I'm thinking next spark plugs replacement I would swap out to R8 coils. I have NGK 1675 platinum right now gapped at .28 for tune. So I'm debating between NGKs and Bosch FR5KPP332S Double Platinum Spark Plug.

That sounds like a good plan. As for the plugs, are those NGKs factory heat range? I'd recommend going a step colder if so.

Why switch to Bosch? They're quality plugs, but so are NGK, just curious as I usually stick to NGK

I believe they are not colder. They are just gapped to .28 vs stock is .32 https://www.amazon.com/NGK-1675-Repl...R4Y0V4WSDZNG1K
I'm in MN and as per my tunner, he didn't think I would need colder plugs. We have enough cold days per year. ;-)

Yeah .28 seems to be the gap to run, if your tuner say stock heat range is fine he's probably right! I did a semester in ND so I'm familiar with how cold it can get in that region of the country haha

Small Update: Started messing with ethanol, Burger Motorsports told me I could run a couple gallons of E85 in my tank and between the ECU and the JB4 the car would adapt on its own. If anyone has experience running Ethanol, especially in a non-flex fuel car, I'd love to hear your input!

    [url=https://flic.kr/p/2iymEE1][/url

Overall the car feels a little stronger and a little smoother in power delivery, but it's hard to tell how much of it has to do with the ethanol and how much is a result of temps dropping ~25 degrees last night. I also don't know exactly how much ethanol was in the stuff I purchased from Sheetz; the pump said the ethanol content could be anywhere inbetween 51% & 83% and I have no way to measure it haha. I think I'll do another 30-60 run and see how the numbers compare before I make a verdict.

Doing an oil change and then getting the dyno run scheduled- had a run in with an STI hatch that had a catless dp, intake, and boost controller and up to 70ish the A4 was as quick or quicker. The Audi still doesn't have the top end to match the Subaru, but never the less I was impressed by the run, that was still on full 93octane btw, not sure how much the ethanol would have helped.

So over the weekend I decided to go through an automatic car wash for the first time ever, went through a very nice touch-less wash however, the high water pressure and crazy jet dryer were too much for my DIY roof rack fairing to handle and it got blown to pieces Pic of the carnage below lol (thankfully no damage to the car itself)

So I decided it was time for a real fairing and bought a Thule Airscreen. I went with Thule because they make the OEM Audi base bars that I have. Unfortunately the only attachments they have are for either the Thule Aeroblade bars or their square bars. I tried using the aeroblade attachments and this was the result

Close but definitely not secure so I decided the best course of action was three strategically placed zip ties haha

Super stable now and no concerns of it coming off or moving around

Here is a pic of how it looks, of course I had to add a couple stickers too lol

So far it works well, although I swear by home-brew plexiglass deflector was slightly quieter. This one is far more stable though, and looks much cleaner too. Shame there is no Audi-specific mounting brackets for it though, having to zip tie this onto another Thule product is a little ridiculous when it costs $120 for a big piece of plastic. Oh well, it works!

Car is booked for the dyno, it will be heading to TPG Tuning here in PGH in a couple weeks, interested to see how accurate my butt dyno is

Hello everyone! Hope you're all staying safe out there! Earlier this week I was finally able to take the car down to the dyno and was pretty blown away by the results. 250whp and 311wtq on the Mustang Dyno! Stock exhaust, Stock intercooler, stock intake, just the JB4 working its magic Tried to do a run in stock mode but for what ever reason that doesn't fully cooperate on my car so it was still adding boost, which is why my baseline is a little high. I made a video of the dyno day and my thoughts which I'll post below.

Felt so good to get these numbers, my expectations were certainly exceeded, and it was a nice result after all the tuning and data logging I did with George from Burger Motorsports to get things dialed in over the past few months. I'm glad I was able to to hit the dyno first after being the first B8.5 to get JB4'd! It's been a fun process for sure

Then today this showed up in the mail so I had to install it

Pretty much the same thing as a Sprint Booster but made by Burger Motorsports. My reason for picking one up is that I've noticed that the amount of pedal input doens't directly correlate to the amount of actual throttle input. Under partial acceleration it almost makes the car feel a little lethargic, and it's difficult to precisely modulate the throttle. This has annoyed me since I got the car so I finally decided to pull the trigger.

Install was easy as you'd expect although there isn't much room to get the connector onto the throttle pedal. I ran the cable behind these plastic panels so it's hidden and can't get in the way.

I was going to velcro it somewhere but it actually fits snugly wedged between the seat so that's where I have it for now

Honestly I'm shocked by the difference it makes, the throttle is SO much more responsive. It almost feels like the car has more torque at times because it not only responds quicker but to a greater extent. You really notice it under partial throttle acceleration. The only "con" is that the extra responsiveness has made the power delivery not as smooth as before. Because it is so eager to respond you notice the lag/boost threshold more, and the boost comes on very abruptly. With the stock mapping the more progressive throttle allowed the car to build the boost more progressively as the throttle body wasn't opening as quickly. That could just be the pedal tuner exposing a weakness of the JB4, which has offered stock-like power delivery until now.

However, there is a lot of adjustment to play with, and I am currently on the most aggressive "Stage 3" setting with +1 added to the sensitivity. As I drive with it more I'm sure I'll get it dialed into a setting that offers the best of both so I'm not fussed about that. Very happy that I got it, it did what I was hoping it would, and overall makes the car feel a little more effortless in the delivery of its performance.

Thanks! It's nice to finally quantify the performance gains with some numbers!

Other than an intercooler upgrade down the road, I don't feel the need to do anything else to it engine wise. Although I want to experiment with E20 a little more just for kicks.

Yeah I certainly can't complain, I was expecting them to be lower honestly. How do you like the UM tune? I haven't heard of many people running them, but their claimed numbers seem solid!

Thanks! Yeah a manual in your Allroad would be sweet! The ZF darn good as you said, but nothing beats the fun of a 3rd pedal. You do get a little extra performance tho, and you can run an E85 tune (manual cars cannot) which would really make your car scoot!

Sidenote: Slight update on the pedal tuner, I dialed it back to the middle map (Stage 2 +3) and the power delivery is once again buttery smooth while still allowing me to enjoy the improved throttle response. It's perfect now! The "Stage 3 +1" setting I had before just made the car a little too jumpy haha

Well, no E85 around here and we only have 91 octane at the pumps. :(
So, I was planning to just get an APR Stage 1 and call it a day.

Good to hear on the throttle tuning! I do find mine a bit Logitech-like.
