    - needle sweep (pointless but fun)
    - windows with fob
    - disable DRL wink with signal, set to dim instead
    - disable amber side markers in front
    - disable red side markers in back (which me and like one other person did but it was one of my favorite VCDS mods)
    - increase LED DRL brightness
    - ambient lighting in the interior

I did others but I forget.

Enjoy the accident you'll get into. You can't see the turn signal for shit during the day unless your DRL brightness is 30 or lower. I ran mine at 75 and had them dim to 30 when the turn signal was on.

I'm definitely going to have to do the reverse mirror tilt, my BMW had that and I found it super useful when parallel parking.

Ambient lighting? I've never seen that in a B8 before do you have any pics of that?

I'll definitely be disabling the side markers, they always annoyed me on my parents old car.

You know the led footwell lighting? That’s the ambient lighting. It allows you to up the brightness and lower it. It stays on 24/7 at night.

My car always did the reverse mirror tilt even before the coding hmm...

If this is the same guy who painted that B5, I’m not so sure haha.

He didn't paint the entire B5, just the bumpers and trunk which actually matched fairly well. The doors and rear quarter that were way off were painted by someone else before I got the car.

It definitely won't be a perfect paint job, but I think it should still look fairly good. Only time will tell though!

I've never understood disabling side markers. Why would you not want someone to see you turning or crossing in front of them? Same thing applies to disabling drl wink. They do that for a reason.

Then why do they not have the side markers in Europe? My A3 euro tails didn't even have an LED in the corner for the side light.

You don't disable the turn signal, I don't know what benefit you think a marker really provides. I can't think of a single instance since I started driving where I noticed a car solely based on the marker lights.

Exactly. Amber side markers and rear side markers are an outdated US regulation (like a lot of our lighting regs) and not required anywhere else. If there was any safety benefit to having them, areas that actually regulate at a reasonable pace and take driving seriously (looking at you, Germany) would have adopted them. So, I see no issue with disabling them and blacking out or removing the reflectors.

I had ecodes in my B8 which completely removed the reflector and obviously the marker as well. I disabled all the markers in my B8.5, no regrets. And my current F10 has the reflectors blacked out too. Tons of people do this without a safety impact.

So finally another update! The painting and body work has taken longer than expected but so far things are looking good and I'm told everything will be done this week. I went to see the car this past weekend to get the hood alignment finalized before it and the fenders get painted, as well as check out the body and paint work that had already been done.

Here is the painted bumper, he basically undid 90% of the body work I had performed prior to dropping it off and now there is no evidence of it having been previously damaged.

Some orange peel is visible, but this is prior to wet sanding and polishing so I'm chuffed with the result so far.

Here is the work done to the used fender I purchased, the edge was bent out slightly but that has been fixed!

Dent fixed on original driver's side fender

Now when we were aligning the hood it was sitting too low on the passenger side. The hood stops rest on the fender rail which was twisted up during the accident, it had previously been straightened out but it was still bent down a little bit. Here was the advanced frame machine we used to adjust it....floor jack with a metal bar

It did the trick though and after some more finagling the gaps are pretty good!

Like I said the fenders and hood should be painted up this week, and then it will be a matter of reassembly and having a new windshield installed for it to get inspected!

Side note, a few weeks ago we picked up the replacement for my mom's old B8 (the black one I pictured in a previous post) 2013 A7 3.0T Prestige!

I'm excited to dig into this one next, should be fun especially since my wallet won't be the one taking the hits lol

    Stay Tuned Everyone!

Wow that's a long time to do the fenders and the front bumper. My shop guy took 2 days for some light quarter panel work and the fron bumper and I told him it took a day too long... Love the A7 keep us posted on that project also or link it here. I'm heading out to Denver in a few weeks to look at a CTS coupe for a possible next project since the S4 project I considered fail through.

Me too! probably my favorite interior color for the A7, excited to see how it eventually looks without the popped air bags and after a nice detail.

Yeah, it has taken him a while but if taking his time means he'll do a better job then I can wait. It's also given me a chance to get reacquainted with my 2000 VW Golf (my first car) which I have been driving in the interim. Such a fun little car, it'll be bittersweet parking it back up once the A4 is ready to roll.

I'm not sure If I'll have a dedicated thread for the A7 since a reasonable amount of progress may happen without me, but I'll check in here with updates here and there so you guys can see what comes of it. A CTS will be a sweet project though, is it a CTS-V or the 3.6 V6?

Maybe one day if my budget facilitates that for the A4 haha I'll probably just cheat and paint the reflectors in mine grey when I eventually replace the outer lenses.

I don't even want to know how much the E-Code full LEDs would cost for the A7 haha

I wish it was a CTS-V those things are crazy fast. Problem is they only produced a few thousand of them so if I could find one at auction it would probably go for a lot more than I would be willing to spend. Plus I'm old and slow now so no need for 500+ HP.

Fair enough haha, the standard coupe still has around 300hp so I'm sure it'll still be reasonably quick. Drop a link in here if you make a thread for it somewhere!

Still trying to decide on the CTS with less miles or a S4. The S4 needs more work, but it's also local. Decisions decisions.

One thing I'll say about that generation of CTS is that the interior quality doesn't come anywhere near that of an Audi. A friend of mine had the sedan version and the interior made so many creaks and the materials weren't the best. It's a decent car and a comfy cruiser, but I'd check one out prior to purchasing if you're not dead set on it yet. Either one would make for a cool project though!

I believe you have to have all ready had full LED in the A7, I’m not sure if you can upgrade from the Xenon....

If you go on EBay.DE the E codes will be cheaper than in the U.S

This A7 came with the full LEDs from the factory, they were removed and placed in the trunk with some other parts and are mostly intact (one had some cracks in the housing which we repaired). I'll look into e-codes on German E-Bay but the current plan is to just buy another A7 for parts so assuming that pans out sourcing lights separately won't be necessary.

Really?? I wonder what model it was. I got the wife a 2010 SRX Premium a few years ago and everything was top notch. Leather was really nice and all door panels and center console has a nice wood grain with a light led trim light all the way around both on the panels and by the floor. Not sure why, but for some reason caddy's don't hold any value at all. The retail for a 2011 CTS coupe was $40k plus. You can find them with around 50k miles on them now for around $12k. The one I'm considering should go for around $3-4k.

Corbin got his ecodes from German eBay. $700 or less shipped I think. And obviously worth it, you can sell the unbroken stock one for probably $250.

It was a 2009 I believe. The interior design wasn't bad, but when we took it on a roadtrip a few years back I remember creaking plastic noises every time I turned the wheel and sometimes over bumps, it drove me nuts haha. Perhaps the creaking isn't a common issue and wasn't unique to his particular car, I haven't been in another CTS since. I did like the way it drove though.

$3-4k for one with 50kmiles would be a good deal, especially if it's not to hard to fix. Are parts particularly expensive for those?

Well my dad just came home and told me he bought another A7 today so the headlights from that will be swapped over. The US-Spec LEDs will probably be pretty great still, and it's gonna be my mom's car so she probably won't notice the difference between them and the e-codes anyways.

$700 isn't bad for a set for a B8.5 though, I'll consider that for my car down the road.

I have an honest question, why’d you buy two wrecked A7’s? You probably could have gotten a higher mileage one for around the same price, with the time and money you’re putting into them. And at the end of the day you’ll have a car that wasn’t in a major wreck

The A7 we're fixing just has surface damage, no frame or suspension damage so it should function as if it weren't in an accident once rebuilt (heck it has less damage than my A4 did). With the purchase price of the parts car in mind the total cost to purchase and fix the one car will be around 60% of what it would have cost to buy an undamaged one with similar options and mileage, once the parts car is resold on Copart or IAAI, that will drop closer to 50%. The car only has ~40k miles on the clock and is almost fully optioned as well; to buy an undamaged A7 with even 100k miles and next to no options would still cost thousands more than this project and we wouldn't have the fun of rebuilding it. For less than $20k all-in, it's a good value in my book.

You do fantastic work no doubt, I am always throughly impressed with the out comes. I’m just saying from my point of view, I rather not have a car in an accident. It’ll have a salvage or rebuilt title too right? Even if it is just surface damage the insurance company said, it’s too much we don’t want to touch it. I mean with all the time you guys are putting into it, you gotta value that too lol. If you have fun doing it that’s all that matters.

You need to read the post I just made.

    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-inside-scoop!

Cars aren't always salvaged based on damage or costs to fix them. About 12 years ago I got a "salvaged" Land Rover that had no damage to it at all. It was a stolen truck that was joy ridden and left parked off the side of a far away road. It sat for a couple of months before it was spotted. By then the insurance company had already paid off the original owner so it went to auction without a scratch on it. I got it for around 30% of it's retail value. Yes it had a "salvaged" title, but that's the only thing wrong with it.

Parts for Caddies are expensive and hard to find. This one however has no damage other than several hail dents. Most guys try and do a paint less repair on hail so they don't have to paint, but that's an expensive time consuming process. However my shop guy said he can fix hail dents the old fashion way with a puller in a few minutes per dent. The problem is it damages the paint. The quick and easy work around is to get it wrapped after the dents are pulled and fixed. Costs for wrapping material is around $600 and me and a buddy will be wrapping it in my garage. He's done a few cars already and I always wanted to learn so it's a perfect weekend project!

A stolen car that has a salvaged title is different in most people’s eyes from a car that was in a wreck. If an airbag deployed I’d say that’s a serious enough accident for the car to be written off. Obviously there are other cases where a air bag wouldn’t go off and it’s still a serious accident.

I personally wouldn’t buy a car that was in an accident that had a salvage title

Again insurance companies don't determine if a car should be salvaged or not, based on damage alone. That's the misconception most people have. You really need to read my linked post and educate yourself.

Again I understand that, and I read what you wrote. I understand that some people refuse that car, and depreciation among other things also have factors.

But I still would not buy a car salvage titled car that’s been in an accident. That’s just my opinion.

The damage history of the vehicle, and it having an R-Title is certainly something to consider, but since we have no plans to sell any of the cars we have built (We plan to drive them until the end of their usable life) so the resale factor is pretty unimportant for us(they could still be sold for reasonable money but finding a buyer would probably take more time). In terms of what it means to us as the people driving them, we carefully chose the vehicles we're rebuilding because the nature of the damage was such that the safety and structural integrity is not compromised. I too would not want to drive a previously totaled car if it meant it was unsafe, but it is crazy what some of these cars get totaled for. Sometimes undamaged parts are marked as damaged to drive up the estimated repair costs and get the vehicle totaled even though the vehicle is completely repairable within reason.

I can totally understand though why you personally wouldn't want a rebuilt car though, no matter what there is still risk involved when taking on these projects.

So finally the post we've all been waiting for!! I got a call last night that the car was done being painted and that I should come check it out.

These pics were prior to any polishing, I think some light wet sanding had been done in certain areas though.

For a budget paint job I'm very pleased with the outcome. It's not perfect, and because he didn't blend in with the doors the match isn't 100% seamless, but given my tight budget constraints and the cost of the project I think It'll still be pretty nice. Plan is to pick it up Friday, and hopefully get it put back together this weekend!

So I got the car home a put some work into it this weekend. I was having some trouble with the passenger headlight; first off, I found out that I accidentally purchased an AFS headlight. The eBay ad never specified and seeing as it was literally the cheapest used xenon without major damage I just assumed it wasn't, my bad. Both my original ballasts from that side (xenon and drl) got pretty banged up so I ended up replacing the xenon ballast with one from a MK7 GTI (it was free) and luckily the LED ballast actually worked fine so I just sealed the crack in the housing so moisture doesn't get in.

Next thing was getting the light mounted, but I ran into an issue because this bracket was bent in the crash and it was pushing the bottom of the fender in too far as a result

I bent the brace back the best I could (it's a curved piece to it's hard to tell where it was originally) I also shimmed it and messed around with the brackets on the light as well getting it from 7mm to 3mm off of the measurement of the driver's side

    (peep the tinted reflector )

It's not perfect, but it's about the same as the driver's side now so I will begin adjusting both of the lights to close up the gaps as there is a larger gap at the top of the light I forgot to picture.

I did a few other things that I forgot to photograph, small things like adding these rubber grommets to the radiator mounts

I also test fitted one of my wheels on the A7 parts car as I'll be swapping over the A7s 2-piston calipers and 356mm rotors as I hear it's a direct swap. They're so close to fitting, looks like I'll need a 5mm spacer though haha

I'll probably paint them, just don't know what color yet. (and yes I'll do something about the curb rash on the wheels lol)

And just for kicks I mocked up the front bumper
