Hello all, just started my latest project so I figured I'd post a thread to document the progress! I've had a couple VAG cars before this, a MKIV VW Golf (my first car, still have it actually) and a B5 A4 1.8T Quattro that I bought not running for $900 and rebuilt

    a4 (1 of 1)-18

    Link to Build Thread Here

The car was fun but it was becoming more of an ongoing project than a daily even after the initial rebuilt as the PO really neglected it, so I sold it and switched to BMW with a 2007 530xi. 6MT Sport Package, had 164k miles at the time of purchase but you would've never known. One owner fully documented dealer service history since new.

    [/url]

I absolutely adored this car. I planned on keeping it for a very long time, but life had other plans and a couple weeks ago I got in an accident which left the car destroyed beyond repair. This brings me to the replacement!

So decided I wanted something a little newer with lower mileage (the BMW had 180k when I lost it), my dad and I had rebuilt a salvage title MK7 GTI for him that we got from an insurance auction and it resulted in a nearly new car with under 10k miles for under $10k. I decided to do the exact same thing, but was having trouble finding a GTI suitable for rebuild, and then we stumbled upon this A4. I've always liked the B8/8.5 (my mom has a 2012 B8) and this one had all the right options so I jumped on it! figured I outta save a life to make up for the BMW haha

The day it was picked up from IAAI

My two mangled Germans (BMW is currently being parted out)

The car is a Monsoon Grey 2013 A4 Premium Plus with 57k miles. It has the Sport Package (a must have IMO), MMI Navigation, Audi Advance Key, B&O sound system, an most importantly, a 6-speed manual gearbox. From what I can tell the PO hit a deer.

My plans are to repair the car and get it looking as close to showroom fresh as I can on my meager college budget, then do a few mods here and there as well once the repairs are all squared away.

The main things the car needs

    -Passenger Headlight

    -Hood Purchased

    -Hood Hinges

    -Passenger Fender Purchased

    -Bumper Purchased

    -Grill Purchased

    -Core Support Purchased

    -Radiator Purchased

    -Fender Rail repair

Stay tuned for some progress coming soon!

Wow I’m surprised the insurance totaled that A4 out. Still has low miles and the damage doesn’t really seem all that bad. Nice find! Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Nice... I'm working on a 12 A4 Avant I got from auction as well. It actually had less damage on it with no bags deployed and around 54k miles. Looks like you already have some parts, but fyi if you can find used parts that are the same year and color of your car you more than likely wouldn't have to do any painting. I restored a CLS550 AMG last year and took that route and saved around $1200 since I didn't have to do any painting and black parts were really easy to find.. Good Luck on the project.

Yeah the damage isn't too bad, shouldn't be terribly hard or expensive to do!

Yeah haha the guy that messed up my B5 also screwed up my dad's GTI so I'm going elsewhere for paint this time. I want it to look as close to new as I can within my budget.

Nice! Do you have a thread for it? The fender I bought was already painted the same color, but the bumper isn't because all the monsoon grey ones were a little damaged so I just got an S-Line one in white that'll get painted. I'd like to find a hood though pre-painted it'll be tricky though.

LOL please do because in that first photo I can every part that was painted on you B5. Your B8.5 isn't old at all so you'll be able to match it just fine with a good body shop

Yeah, to be fair that car was painted a bunch before I got it (I only had the bumpers and trunk done) the rest was done by another crappy body shop when the PO had it

But yeah, unlike the B5 this car is worth spending the extra money to make it look right. I think I'll end up having the front clear bra'd as well to preserve the paint once it's finished.

Yeah I started a basic thread, but need to post some update pics. Still working on getting it registered so I can drive it around and start working on upgrades. https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-Avant-Owner!!

As for bumpers and small parts I just do them myself in the garage and let me body guy do the major stuff. A somewhat good paint gun only costs a couple hundred bucks and a small compressor can be had used for cheap. I already knew how to paint a little for other things and painting over old parts gave me enough practice. It's actually not hard once you get the hang of swinging left to right with a straight stiff hand. For me it's all about keeping costs down as much as possible so the wife doesn't cut my hobby off.

Luckily I'm in So Cal and there are literally hundreds of junk yards if I drove out to LA and look for parts. This helps keeps costs down on things like fenders and hoods since I don't have to have anything shipped. My total build budget for the A4 is only $7k and I may go over if I do the tensioner which seems to be needed for my B8.

Nice I'll have to check that out!

Unfortunately for me none of my local junkyards have newer Audis so I'm having to shop most everything. As for paint I briefly entertained the idea of doing it myself, but unless going to a quality shop is out of my budget, I'd prefer to pay someone so I know the color will match well and the finish will be good. It's a possibility, but kind of a last resort for me personally.

Yeah no local yards is a hassle as shipping parts in can get expensive. As for color matching just give the paint shop your paint code and they can look up how to mix the paint or order directly from audi. Since it's only a few small parts paint is typically around $100 if that and the color always matches exactly. The only time you may run into paint problems if it's not a stock paint job.

So I was able to make some more progress this week. The new bumper arrived, went with an S-Line one as I'm not the biggest fan of the standard B8.5 bumper. It came with a gloss black grill, but it has a few scratches, should clean up pretty nicely though.

I also got the front end completely torn down with all the busted parts removed

Closer look at the fender rail that will need repaired (or replaced) by a shop.

I also had a go at cleaning up the Titanium Grey interior, the leather had a brown film of dirt on it so I cleaned a section to see how the rest of the interior would come out when I get around to detailing it. He's a 50/50 shot

So in order to have the fender rail fixed I want to have as much of the front end together as I can so it's easier for the shop to ensure everything is properly lined up. This means the next items to be ordered will be the radiator and core support. After that the only other major parts that I need will be the hood and headlight. I'll need a bunch of little minor bits as well, but those will be easy to sort out; once I get a concrete list of what I need I'll post it to give you guys a idea.

Here's a little parts list so far.

    Already Have

    -OEM S-Line bumper

    -OEM Gloss black grill

    -OEM Fender (painted)

    Ordered

    -OEM Hood (painted)

    -Aftermarket Core support

    -CSF Radiator

    Still Need

    -Passenger side Xenon Headlight *Non-AFS

    -Fog lights

    -Fog light grills

    -Hood Hinges

    -Passenger side bumper mount

    -Airbox

-Random hose fitting which runs from the turbo

My plan is to install the new radiator and core support, then take the car to the body shop to have the fender rail repaired (and fix the dent the auction house put in the driver's side fender). Once that is done I'll be able to bolt up all the remaining bits and then either take it for enhanced inspection, then paint, or vise versa. I'm taking a small vacation soon which will cut into my time (and funding) a little bit, but my hope is to have the car rolling by the end of July.

Also since the bumper is the only thing that needs fully painted (the fenders have only minor damage and the hood is in acceptable shape) I'm heavily considering painting the bumper myself, and then waiting to have the whole front end professionally resprayed after my bank account has had some time to recover haha.

Side note, my dad let me drive his MK7 GTI (another auction rebuild) for a few weeks and I've been loving it. Such a blast to drive!

Yeah I heard that guy worked wonders on the Allroad haha

Once I get some free time on my hands I'd like to shoot an RAC episode on the GTI. I have ideas for a few other episodes too, it's just a matter of finding the time to film them.

Small update, picked up some used hood hinges from AutoHaas, radiator and hood arrived but the radiator didn't fit (was the CSF brand one sold on RockAuto and ECS, they sent the right part but it is NOT plug an play as advertised) and the hood was bent like an origami when it arrived so I'm in the process of getting that sent back as well.

    Bent hood

On the bright side I got a new N75 valve to replace my busted one and that went on with ease

Found this ballast among the bits of smashed headlight

I tested it on the driver side light and it still works, but makes a buzzing noise, so I'll likely replace it sooner or later.

Also I forgot to mention, I did receive a replacement core support. Having to return the rad and hood has slowed progress a bit but I'm still anticipating the car will make its way to the body shop within the next couple weeks once I get those parts reordered. Side note I think I'm going to order a DV spacer, not necessary at all but it looks like it'll be way easier to install with the front end torn apart and the extra turbo noise would be cool so I figure why not!

Nice update. Man that's tough on the parts not fitting and coming in damaged. I'm so happy I live in So Cal. Whenever I do a build it takes about a week to find just about any part for any car with the 100+ junk yards within driving distance.

Yeah it sucks, none of the junkyards near me have Audis this new so it's been a challenge finding parts, many of them have ended up coming from California actually. once I have all the major parts and can send it to the body shop I'm sure (read "I hope" lol) things will start moving more quickly.

What junkyards do you go to in so cal???

    How's your Avant coming along?
Got the plates and new title a couple of weeks ago. Just got it out of the shop for basics like oil, plugs, filter. Picked up some 19", but realized the AC isn't cooling so need to fix that before anything else since temps here in OC got as high as 100!!

Depends on the car. I think for the current build I got some parts from A&M and Nu Way that has a ton of euros. Lynwood auto is another big yard. I didn’t need too many parts for this build, but I try and stick to the bigger yards and stay away from the “specialty” ones since they can be pricey.

Thanks! It kinda feels like extreme recycling in a way considering the car would have ended up in a salvage yard somewhere haha

Nice, you should post an update in your thread with pics! Triple digit temps with no AC does not sound fun though, hopefully it's a quick fix!

Some more progress has been made! Got some goodies in the mail

New vacuum check valve (this was actually a little tricky to find but eBay came in clutch.)

    New Nissens radiator

Replacement airbox (came with a new Mann air filter installed too!)

And a Forge DV spacer (this isn't actually a forge product, it's a clone I got on eBay for $13, pretty simple piece and seems to function well, more later)

    Installed the DV spacer

Removed the mess that was the original intake and replaced with the new one.

As you can see the bent fender rail prevents it from being installed properly so that's why it's sitting awkward for now

Then i put the front end back together with the new radiator and core support

I took her for a quick spin around the block and couldn't stop smiling, the DV spacer sounds amazing, loud PSHH! PSHH! noises in-between shifts accompanied by a little flutter when getting off boost $13 well spent IMO! The car itself drives perfectly fine and the engine pulls nicely. Felt good to drive it after staring at it in the garage for so long.

I also gave it a good clean inside and out.

Almost looks like a complete car there lol

The interior no longer smells like the previous owner's grot (although I still need to go back do some touchups) and the exterior stripped of the grime that it had accumulated at the insurance yard and in my garage.

Also mocked up the S-Line bumper just for kicks, seems to fit well on the drivers side

Next stop was the body shop! Dropped it off last night to have the mangled fender rail pulled, to save some money the guy is letting me come back on my day off to pull the front end back apart for him to save on labor. You'll notice the bent up hood I bought is on the car, I ended up getting a refund and was told to keep it due to shipping costs, i asked if he could fix it since the thing was basically free and predictably the answer was no haha, oh well.

    So what's left to buy?

Hood (probably gonna have to go aftermarket)

    Passenger headlight

    Headlight lower mount

    A few misc. bits

    Bumper fog grills

    Fog lights

What needs done to the car

    Fix fender rail

Fix dent in driver's side fender that prevents hood from fully opening

    Paint

    Reassembly

Fender rail and paint will be done by the same guy, and I think I'll try and tackle the dent in the fender myself. Hoping to have the car done in time to start school in about a month or so, assuming we don't hit any major road blocks I think that's feasible.

Nice update. Sucks on the hood, but I think I good shop guy could save it. I've seen hoods with much more damage brought back to life, but you have to have the right tools and use a laser level to make sure it bends correctly. Are you going with a S-Line grill on the front?

It's a little more damaged than the picture would suggest, but it sounded like he could fix it, but it just wouldn't be practical. As for the grill, yes I have an OEM gloss black S-Line that was installed in the mock up photo.

Small update since I haven't posted in ages. I ordered another hood, this time brand new aftermarket, and it arrived damaged beyond repair. That issue took way too long to resolve. Then I ordered a new OEM hood from another company, and a day later my order was cancelled because they couldn't ship it safely (not sure why they listed it on the site if they can't actually sell you it lol). After a bunch more runaround, I finally gave up and called the dealership, spending more than double what I had budgeted on a hood, at least it's new and OEM and should arrive in perfect shape. Who knew hoods were so hard to buy.

On the bright side though some slight progress has still been made. Firstly, the bent fender frame rail was straightened out and seems to line up nicely (sorry I forget to take a pic when I saw the car last) and I also have nearly finished sanding and filling in the minor damage that was on the S-Line bumper I had picked up.

Just smoothing out the major imperfections to save my paint guy some time and myself some $$$, it's coming along well.

Also received a used headlight from eBay

lots of scratches on the lens but from a distance they're not noticeable and it was super cheap. In the spring I can just replace the lenses on both lights and that'll give me a chance to do a proper amber delete as well.

I also picked up a set of used S-Line fog lights from @avantagg here on the forum, well packed and arrived as advertised, thanks!

All I need parts wise are fog light grills and a passenger headlight bracket which will be ordered this week. I also am going to need to have a windshield installed as the small crack in mine I was hoping would go unnoticed spread clear across the windshield. I'm just praying this hood arrives in one piece so I can take it to the painter and have this thing wrapped up, I just wanna drive!

On an unrelated note, we also said goodbye to my mom's 2012 B8 Frontrak after 5 years and 100k miles of faithful service. Was a great car but it's fwd will not be missed haha. Currently hunting for a salvage Audi (w/Quattro) to replace it!

Pics I took for it's for sale ad

That's all for now, hopefully the next update involves a car that's road legal (or close to it)!

You and I both haha, thanks! Just got a phone call from the dealership saying my hood arrived so hopefully dropping that off at the shop with the bumper sometime this week to get the ball rolling on paint!

So the new hood from the dealership arrived and it was in perfect condition! Took it over to my body guy and helped him get it lined up with the replacement fender I purchased. We spent the entire day getting everything lined up, and when looking back on the experience I'm glad I purchased OEM body parts because knowing that the panels were straight made it easier to determine when the car itself needed some persuasion with a hammer haha.

Heres the fender rail that was straightened out

New OEM hoof lined up with used OEM fender. Fender is already painted monsoon grey but it will get resprayed as it has some deep scratches

Also, when i bought the hood the dealership claimed I needed to spend $50 on "sound insulation", this is what they gave me

$50 piece of foam tape....yeah that's getting returned lol

So this week, the body guy will remove a dent from the driver's side fender and paint the underside of the hood. Then, I'll probably head back this weekend to help him refit the hood so he can paint the top of the hood, fenders, and bumper together! We're getting close

hahah of course you "need" it just like the owners kids "need" to go to an Ivy league school... Stuff like this always reminds me why I should never ever buy anything from a "dealer".

haha The parts guy probably just assumed I was calling from a shop and some insurance company would ultimately be footing the bill. In general the dealership I purchased from is pretty good with taking care of customers, I actually work there from time to time during school. I just thought it was funny that Audi charges $50 for tape, I bet stupid little things like that adding up are what end up ultimately totaling some of these cars.

Nice job Ayrton, looks like that was definitely worth reviving. It almost definitely has an open recall which will revise the ECU box code but once that's done, tune it ASAP and it'll be a joy to drive. Also highly recommend the CR-15 brace and 034 drivetrain inserts which will make the shift feel infinitely better.

Thanks! A tune is definitely in the cards once my wallet recovers a bit haha, looking at the numbers APR claims for Stage 1 have me eager to get it flashed. I'll definitely look into the CR15 and drivetrain inserts too, my main complaint from driving manual B8s in the past was the lack of shifter feel so anything to improve that would be great for me. It's funny how my mod wish list keeps growing and the car doesn't even have a plate yet

Drivetrain inserts are cheap and immensely worth it. Makes the 1-2 shift far more smooth. CR-15 makes the steering more responsive, especially on the highway, and is also pretty cheap. Brian did a thorough rebroo on both.

I'll have to read his reboos for sure! Any recommendations for coding I should do? I want to enable the gauge sweep, and window roll up/down via the key fob but am curious if there are any others options that are "must haves"

Definitely need to do all of those Vag-com goodies. Do you need anything special to get the reverse mirror tilt?

Can confirm the APR tune is great, I am very happy with it on the Allroad.
