First track day with the new TTRS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,
Wanted to share updates throughout the weekend. I'm headed to Brainerd international raceway in Minnesota for an event called proving grounds.

I'm going to share plenty of pictures as we travel and enjoy the event.

I will be putting the car through it's paces, testing some products from Iroz Motorsports and Essex racing, and making some great memories.

We are nearly two hours into our 5.5 hour trip, here's how it looked when we left, for anyone wondering those are TSW 18x9.5 et53 with 275 rs4 tires no rubbing yet....

Friday evening test and tune autox, this car is a beast, i have several videos I'll look into uploading a couple.
I scrubbed in the fresh rs3 tires, bed the essex\ap racing\ferodo brake setup and worked on myself and getting sharper for tomorrow. I've got to say how impressive it is that this car is so autox capable mostly out of the box, it will shine on the bigger track, but it held it's own even against the pesky s2000s and minis that were Auto x cars.

I can't wait to take mine to autocrossing. Just going on canyon runs I can tell how capable the car is. Feels like it could use some sway bars, and obviously pads + higher temp fluid, but is otherwise really well sorted.

I will be here tomorrow as well, plenty of fun to be had still.
Managed two 11.8s and one 11.7 at the strip.
Spent the rest of the day at the big road course, autox competition is tonight!

112s and 113s no real power mods yet, I have an iroz intercooler no real power difference for a 1\4 Mile, ap brakes (lighter) tsw 18s which are lighter, 275 tires which are heavier, rear end was entirely empty but I had a full tank of gas.

Car weighed 3425 with me in it, I'm 220.

There was a very stiff 15-20 mph headwind that probably affected the trap speeds by a few numbers, everyone was noticing low trap speeds.

You said you did the long course, curious what speeds you were hitting going into turn 1. I have done that course a dozen times in my MK2 TTRS, but have yet to make it there in my MK3. Curious about what difference in speed there might be.

Btw, you should join us there in October for Quattroberfest. It's Glacier Lakes Audi Clubs big event every year.

It was the competition road course, so the extra long straights were not in play, i like the short course better, more corners!

True, but the long course I believe is the fastest course in North America. Gotta love hitting 160+ :-) glad you had a fun time, last time I was at Proving Grounds, 2 cars totalled themselves on the short course. Was not good

Yes a newer Corvette was totaled today, always sad to see. Last time i was on the full course I was in a slow car. I don't think it went over 130 the whole time haha!

I'll look into the October event, is there a competition portion or is it all hpde?

I too would like to know this. I just put a deposit down on a 2018 TTRS that is due at my dealership in a few days and, thus far, my experience in the driver's seat is only about 20 minutes which is what it took for my initial test drive. I am excited about getting the car but would certainly like to hear from folks who have experience in putting it through its paces, so to speak.

I've done two full track days at Thunderhill on the 3 mile circuit. Had an absolute blast. This car is quick and capable right out of the box. I'm pretty new to this but didn't notice any real shortcomings, I expected more understeer but it wasn't an issue. I was probably way off the limit, but I found the car to be very consistent between runs.

I'm still keen to see what some better brakes (fluids and pads first), and track-specific wheels can do.

Here's a bit of in-car action (remember this was my first day EVER on a track, so go easy!)

It was wonderful, so predictable and easy to drive, it feels a tiny bit heavy midcorner, but remains very nuetral. Can trail brake without upsetting the chassis and scrub off speed mid corner without wiping out.

I'll have some times posted soon, I think I won in the TTS SS class which was a triple challenge Drag, Autox, Road course, limited to fairly stock vehicles on street tires. And then the times were combined.

I know specifically on the road course i had a 100 second run, for comparables an evo 9 that was extremely modified for one lap of America ran in the 95 second range, a extremely modified Viper ACR on hoosier tires ran at least a 94 probably faster as i only caught that one run.

I'll get a review up soon of the AP Essex front brake setup, I won't track a car anymore unless I have complete confidence in the brake setup and after hearing of some horror stories with the fronts of these cars I didn't want to risk such an incident.

It's purely HPDE. 2 full days on the long course. We go to the short course if it rains (that drag strip turns to ice when it gets wet)

GoPro Hero 5 suction mounted to the windscreen. With GPS activated you get all that overlay data in the GoPro Quik software that's free.

I want to explore getting OBDII data at some stage as well.

I’ve never been on a track but the new car will change that. I found, what I think to be, the coolest “enthusiast” dash cam that will be perfect for such things. Has a wireless Bluetooth OBD-II transmitter that overlays performance data over the picture that you can toggle what you want shown/not. Tracks 0-30/60 times and has a lot of tracks courses that you can also toggle or has a GPS. I just got it installed on Sunday but here is a screenshot of the overlays. Back of the cam has a screen like an iPhone that you can swipe between information shown in any of the overlays. Called Waylens Horizon. Not cheap but so far I have zero complaints. Very cool gadget.

It was strange to see my trap speeds so low (113), makes me wonder if I have a torn intercooler coupler or something else strange going on, Although we had a strong headwind and most guys speeds were noticeably lower then usual.

You have a timeslip by chance?

Density altitude matters, too. You need times and that as well to really compare.

One of my runs last year:
    11.7256s
    Density Altitude: 1728 feet

Hey guys, I'm looking to do a downpipe on the car which I already have. But I was wondering if it's required to have a drive shaft removal tool or if I can just use some pry bars and some elbow grease without the specific tool?

You can try but there were people I know broke the driveshaft because they improvised the tool to remove it and that costed them over $1000. I would just get the tool to do so in which Iroz is selling one.

You should have a blast with that TTRS. I just finished my 10th track day about 3 weeks ago and it's a blast.
I like golf but tracking is a lot more fun!!!!!! Enjoy.

Have you changed much with the suspension and alignment?
Looking into that now, and adding a little bit of aero with a front splitter and eventually a decent rear wing for track days.

No I haven't change the suspension, just a tune and brakes. Just bought a Mustang full blown race car.
I'm going to run it a few times before i decide if what I'm going to do with my TTRS. The Mustang has
a five speed, I'm going to miss that 7 speed dual clutch. It's a sweet transmission.
