    Boneheaded mistake needs fixing

Today I made my first boneheaded mistake on my S4. I was at one of the do it yourself pay per hour shops doing an oil change and a quick inspection. Got under the car and drained the oil... or so I thought. Turns out the transmission fluid pan looks exactly like the oil pan, and it says "GEAR OIL PAN" on it. me being the bonehead that I am decided to only read where it said OIL PAN, so I ended up emptying the transmission. But wait it only gets worse, when I had drained about 70% of the gear oil I realized that it smelled awfully weird for what I thought was oil, and had realized my mistake. No big deal I thought, i'll just ask the shop tech if they have any fluid to refill. What do you know, they do have some! so I did my little thing and refilled the transmission. Finished my oil change and set the car down off the lift and moved it outside. Came back in to clean up my bay and recycle all the bottles of oil and everything, when I took a look at the "gear oil" I had put in. Turns out the shop tech handed me ATF and I had just filled my DSG with ATF. At this point I am in too deep, I'm out of my comfort zone, so I call a euro shop, and tell them the situation, they quote me at 600-900$ to do a full flush and replace all of the filters . So I call a tow truck and my car is sitting at the shop currently. When I was trying to get a quote, I called 3 different shops to see what they had to say. And one of them told me that I should do the full flush, and drive it probably 100 miles, and then bring it back in for another flush just to make sure everything was out. Is this good advice? I don't want to turn my already 900$ oil change into a 4000$ oil change when my DSG blows.

Yea , 600-800 is the rate that goes around here in Cali at a Indy shop . That includes both internal and external filter . Tow the car to the Indy shop and have them take care of it . Dont drive the car at all

If you didn’t run it yet, just drain the fluid again, change the filter and fill with correct fluid. If the engine wasn’t started, the trans DSG fluid wouldn’t of circulated, it’s all sitting in the sump. I don’t see why a flush would be needed at all. Btw, depending on what flush system/fluid they use, often it makes a transmission worse than it was before the work started…just my 2cents.

Well then..sounds like you don’t have much choice unless you flush it yourself

Talk to techs at dealers. You will find that they find red atf in dsg cars more often than you think. Its oil. It won’t hurt it. Just drain and refill. Then again if it makes you feel better. Atf is made for gears and wet clutches. A small amount left over in there will not hurt it

Just 200' shouldnt damage much. Hoovie drove his SLS several miles with incorrect fluid in the DCT, just tow it to a shop for a flush and you'll be ok.

If it was me, I’d drain, put correct fluid in. Drive it for a couple miles, then Drain it again, do filters, and replace with correct fluid.

I think you’ll be okay, you’re probably just stressing it (as would I if I was in the same situation)

I'm still confused as to how you mistook the engine oil pan for the gear oil. I don't mean to beat you down, it's pretty hard to mix up on these cars, I think.

Have seen posts from several new members on the FB forums, that have accidently done it after purchasing, along with a few less than competent shops.

Such a stupid mistake, I've only done probably 5 oil changes before this, all on much simpler cars. So this is the first time that there would be more than one pan that would have the same look as an oil pan. Good lesson learned though.
