Any way 2 tell if your over drive pulley is toast?

As we all are aware it's a common failure point in the 3.0t. But are there any warning signs it's going out? 2013 w 49k miles.

Are you talking about the stock 162mm drive pulley?

Overdrive implies larger than stock size. Anyways....

Well, I'm no expert, but it does look like it's starting to break apart. I actually have a JHM 162mm Pulley (stock size) that I had as a preventative measure against this failure. Since then, I've gone dual pulley. I've got all the installation hardware and a belt as well. Let me know if you want it and we can negotiate a good price!

Is there any play between the outer and inner section if you jostle it by hand?

Delamination of the stock two piece crank pulley is a known issue. Aftermarket pulley is the solution.

I did not see where OP described the symptoms. What is happening? I guess you are just being alert and don't have any symptoms, yet.

From other threads, it seems that the failures are sudden and unexpected. There might be some vibration or belt jumping off first.

You may need a new belt or belt tensioner, both very inexpensive, before the pulley lets go. But, considering the poor design of the OEM pulley, it would be wise to replace it anyway. I was going to do that even if I did not go Stage 2. Piece of mind.

JHM makes good stuff. I'm running their 179mm with my Stage 2 EPL tune.

Nothing has happened just happened 2 notice the rust on it. I'm going to take it to a friends whom is a fulltime tech to see what he thinks. He advised if there isnt any "play" in it then its prob fine, however the rust on it can be an indicator of something not good lol

I'd suggest (and it is only a suggestion), that it there is "play" then it is already near failure. After mine was removed (about 5K on it) I could not feel any "play" whatsoever. I really imagine that unless the polymer is heavily cracked all around it won't move much. The trouble is we don't know how slowly or quickly the polymer cracks, and whether it accelerates before failure. What I did notice about my nearly new one was that the polymer visible in the 5 oval holes was very smooth and slightly soft (softer than I had expected). It looks similar to this one:

I'm guessing, but if you can inspect, or even just feel with a finger, the polymer in those 5 holes, it might give an indication of its health.

The rust seems to be somewhat common.
