I'm new to Audis, is the 8P A3 the best fit for me in this situation?

    Hey guys,

So truth be told I've never really been into Audis or Euro cars, but I'm after a new daily that's fairly reliable, quick, and a manual. I live in Australia and I've found quite a few Audis fit my budget, which is under $10k AUD / $7500 USD. The less it costs the better, but I'm definitely prioritising a clean car over a cheap car. My three requirements are: 1) Reliable 2) Manual 3) Good base for modifying. I also really like the Quattro models. So far I've come up with these options, which I'll rank from least to most expensive:

    1) Audi A4 B5 ($2k to $5k USD)

    2) Audi A4 B6 ($3k to $6k USD)

    3) Audi A3 8P ($5k to $7k USD)

    4) Audi S3 8L ($5k to $8k USD)

    5) Audi A4 B7 ($6k to $8k USD)

I can see pros and cons to each but I think I'm leaning most towards the A3 as it's a good price, not as big or heavy as an A4. I can find a clean, low mileage A3 2.0T Quattro with a 6-speed manual for around $5k to $7k USD. From what I've read online, an APR Stage 1 kit (ECU flash only from my understanding) will get me a 0-60 time of around 5.5 seconds, and performance can only go up from there. Are 8P A3's pretty good for modifying or am I better off spending my money elsewhere? I briefly looked at the B5 S4 but I think it would bleed me dry! Thanks guys.

Has your A3 been pretty reliable? I know that these cars will cost more than a Toyota or Honda to maintain, but I've heard mixed reviews of Audi/VW reliability.
