Haldex and Stage-2 TCU/ECU tune now with UM Haldex Upgrade!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First I want to preface this with my Haldex experience which due to my OCD I just started replacing shit without thinking or having it physically confirmed by a good mechanic.

#1- Fact - Never launched the car in the three (3) years I had it - Seriously never even tried it stock.

    #2- Fact - Was stage 2 ECU/ stage 1 TCU for 20K, then went to stage 2 TCU (Eurodyne) W/Meth last 5-10K.

#3 Thought what the hell I try to launch it, well the dreaded front wheel spin in rainy and dry conditions. Oh no, my Haldex failed.

    Events:

#1- Replaced Haldex pump, did nothing. Internet search oh must be controller!

#2- Replaced controller with latest version, did nothing. Internet search oh no rear diff no good (no codes)

#3- Replaced rear diff with a used unit under 20K, did nothing for launch and wheel spin. Internet search - Oh no I have the "F" model must be bad. Then a friend talked some sense into me, take it somewhere let them check it out. Cant go to Audi don't want to be flagged.

#4- Take it to a reputable Audi only specialist (Northern NJ). "You cant go changing stuff without getting it ODI coded with an Audi computer. I can do it" To weeks later car back, guess what same shit.

    Next Event:

The shop that recoded everything called me and said listen what you are seeing is perfectly normal for a tuned Haldex system with high boost through the first few gears. The only way to fix that is with a Haldex upgrade.

Hence this takes me to United Motorsports and Redline speed Worx (RSW) (Amazing Place & Customer Service)

They loaded the UM software on the car and had it back to me in approx. 20-min LOL, used plastic seat covers and paper floor mat covers.

Now initial impressions (Drove about 30-miles thus far):

The car feels like it is being pushed under hard throttle not pulled so much. Turns are amazingly different in a great way I felt this car pushed hard in turns now the rear seems to be grabby.

LC - Front wheels spin not eliminated, but much much much better. It is like it is letting the front slip ever so much as not to let it demolish the trans.

Taking off hard in a turn - The turns where it was bouncing off TC when accelerating hard is gone, the torque seems to be on more in the rear, I cant explain it but it just feels like it is again being pushed.

Straight line acceleration is D and S is amazing and planted, I can tell its just faster.

I will upodate the forums as I get more and more feedback, I can't recommend RSW enough, TAKE UR CAR THERE!!!

Interesting that the shop said that is "normal for the first few gears"... only the front wheels spin in first gear...or should be anyways, after that the Haldex engages the rears appropriately.

Anyways..back the main content: The UM Haldex upgrade...! Sounds like a worthy upgrade for people that are flashed.

There's more to it.. My understanding is that you also get more engagement in the rear if you run taller rear tires - they do that very thing on the Rs3 which is supposed to be more rear biased. IIRC it was around 3% bigger in the back for the split tire version. Mine is Stage 1+, and I can't really tell my front tires are spinning - Maybe one rotation in front as it takes off.

Let me correct that he did say it was normal for a sec or two until it kicks in. But with a stage2 tune it will seem worsee

    Update:

Rainy all weekend here in NJ. So I got a chance to test the tune on a wet surface. 100% better then before again still a little slip, but the rear traction kicks in very quickly and feels very stable. I would love to see the difference in the snow.

Again the car feels more rear biased then before not night and day however but I feel the push more. I think this is a worthy upgrade for the stage-2 folks. I am also going to do some tuning with the Maestro to see if I can remove some boost from first gear to help reduced wheel spin and increase traction some to the front.

Wait, so your Haldex failed, and a software tune "fixed" it? Can you clarify? Thanks.

I don't think my haldex ever failed to be honest, I just had some front wheel spin with stage-2 ECU/TCU tune so I assumed it was that.

I replaced everything pump, controller and rear diff thinking it was that nothing changed. Then I did the Haldex tune and all seems to be better!

    Note:

Didn't remove all wheel spin, but better!

did you ever do the vcds tweaks?
your description of the rear feeling more grabby seems like what i felt with my stock car but with the vcds tweaks.

Do you still have eurodyne ecu and tcu? Did you just add the UM haldex tune on top of it? Thanks.

yes added UM on top of it, it feels like the increased traction through VCDS just more pronounced it actually feels like it did something.

I think there's probably a lot of people thinking their Haldex failed when it didn't. I personally get worried sometimes on my car because the car seems to cut power way too often when flooring it and traction control is fully enabled. Like you, I've never launched the car and don't plan to and I've never had it to where my front wheels just spin, but the damn traction control system seems to activate a lot when flooring it which is definitely annoying.

Are u tuned because I am told since it does it in standard tune the stage-2 tunes only exasperate the issue.

I can go into Maestro I believe and cut my boost.

As a side note with the UM tunes my car doesn’t cut out anymore and fall in its face.

Stage 1.5 Eurodyne Maestro tune here. I don't remember if it did it before the tune - but I pretty sure it didn't. I did the Stage 1 Eurodyne TCU tune as well. And yeah, you can go in and cut boost. I had to do that the one time I accidentally filled up with 87 octane (instead of 93).

You can cut boost in the MqB adjustable files but what about in the maestro tuning for 1st gear only

ASR (traction control) is annoying, I get cut-outs with WOT in 1st gear sometimes too. Best to turn it off when having fun, but leave ESP on, which allows quattro to do its thing.
