APR Stage 2+ blown up cats.

    Hey Guys,

I haven't posted on here in centuries.

So I've had my b8 S4 since 2012 and have been running APR Stage2+ for about half of the life of the car. (just hit 70k miles)

I was driving the other day and my ECL came on and I brought it to Audi. They scanned it and the following code came up: "p042000 catalyst bank 1 efficiency below threshold".

He told me it was the Cats. I have a pretty good relationship with the guy and he told me he'd try to get it covered, but it wouldn't get approved because of the tune.

I told him not to do any work and picked up the car and it seemed to be running fine... until 2 days ago: car started and had a deeper tone ad idle and while driving. Also spewing out a ridiculous amount of whiteish-greyish-yelowish smoke.

What's my best bet in resolving this issue? Will it cause any issues if i don't do anything? I'm not planning to keep this car much longer because I intend to upgrade. Any advice would be great!

    Thanks :)

Yup, labor is the killer. I think Audi quotes 12 hours. Some skilled techs can get them done in 6-8 with proper equipment.

A select few shops most definitely can. All the shops who do a set in Chicago seem to go "Man we should have just pulled the engine" after they've completed the job. We're short on forward thinkers in Chicagoland.

    Sorry to bump this.

My assumption is that it is fine to drive with a blown out cat, but please let me know if i'm incorrect.

    Thanks!

Audi quoted $5025.92 without "shop fees & taxes" that seems ridiculously high..

I'm new to Florida so that's why I went to dealer. I don't know any good reputable indy shops in the area. I'm going to go stock cats again. I have APR downpipes into AWE exhaust. This sucks, I was planning to get rid of the car soon and upgrade didn't want to put more money into this haha.

Go to Tampa autosport and have them do it, they might even have used oem cars that theyve taken off other cars

We have a couple good shops in the JAX area, but that's probably further from you.

Do you still have a warranty left? Can't flash back to stock?

If you have a good relationship cant you just flash back to stock and have the dealer do it? Everything else is just visual.

If you're getting rid of the car soon why go with expensive OE cats? Just go with the Becker test pipes and find an indy shop to do the work. Should be around $1500.

Or, go to an exhaust shop and them cut out the cats and weld in another core....sell your old cores and break even.

What about the direct fit Magnaflow cats? Haven't heard much about them though.

They're not in a location to just have an exhaust shop "cut them out." You can't get to them to cut.

Ask before you go, many reputable shops will not weld on used cats
