Help pulling a B5 S4 engine

Hi everyone, Joel here. Long story short, my timing belt tensioner failed in my B5 S4, valves played drums on the pistons, zero compression in 4 out of 6 cylinders, so I didn't bother to check the other 2 cylinders.....lol

The new (to me) engine is on its way, will be here Friday, but I have NO idea what I'm doing when it comes to taking this engine out. I have all the basic stuff disconnected, meaning, having it stripped down to the timing belt, but no further.
I have looked at the youtube video many times, but we all know everything recorded looks easier than real life. Well, for me anyway.

So I'm wondering if ANY experienced B5 S4 engine pullers out there are willing to help me out. Depending on when we start, breakfast, lunch AND dinner is on me, with brews if wanted.
The car is on a lift and there are lots of the necessary tools are accessible (again, my knowledge is limited). So the only thing lacking is my knowledge of this car.

Let me know if anyone is interested and availability.
You don't even have to turn a wrench, simply guide me on what to do.

Or any other guidance is appreciated.

Hey man saw you at the shop earlier today, I was there working on my avant. Nice meeting you.

What are your plans/goals with the engine replacement? Based on the condition of the engine you bought (from what I could see), I would try and pull most of the accessories from your existing motor. You should also invest in some gaskets and seals..other basic stuff while you're in there and it's all easy to access still.

I live and work pretty closeby so could stop thru to help you out with the engine swap periodically if you like. Not sure of the timeline you are working with.

Great minds think alike I guess because I did plan to take all of the good parts from my used engine and transfer them to my 'new to me' engine, especially the NEW timing stuff I bought.

My goal with this engine is to simply get it running. No power goals or anything special and hopefully it last until AFTER I get another engine built.

What I need help with is with the actually swapping of the engine. I can strip it down and swap parts, but when it comes to the actual getting it in and out of the car, I'm a lost soul.

Please do a leakdown test on the used engine before installing. For two reasons, 1) If bad, can return the LKQ engine for another one. 2) will avoid r&r an engine twice. Get a repair manual and take your time. You got this bro!

If you can swap the parts over... you have more than enough skill to pull that motor.

I started on the trans side and worked my way forward.

Driveshaft
CVs
Trans Mounts
Downpipes
Shift linkage.

Label the bolts clearly and specifically. There are not many.

Support the trans with a jack or since it’s on a lift a stand.

Move to the front.

Pull bumper
Pull headlights
Disconnect radiator hoses and plugs from the front clip... mostly on the drivers side.
Mark the 4 bolts holding the front clip with a marker,
Pull AC out and condenser... condenser gets folded over and hung from the hood... use cardboard to keep it safe.
AC will need to remove the oil filter block or cooler what ever that is to slide the AC unit put... slide it over and hang it from something.

Now you can get to motor mounts

Unplug wiring harness,
Throw on top of engine.
Unplug fuel line and vacuum lines, disconnect 2 grounds one is hiding under the pass side bumper frame, the other is connected to the main harness by the ECU.
Disconnect heater core
Check everything is disconnected
Chain the motor unbolt your mounts.

Pump it up pull a bit... check the engine everything is unplugged pull... set it down on a tire!

That’s it ;)

Now get to work... chop chop LOL.

Throw on top of engine.

Disconnect heater core - Will try to disconnect from behind the engine because I've heard horror stories of damaging it when trying to remove from the firewall.
Check everything is disconnected - Easier with more eyes watching.
Chain the motor unbolt your mounts.

Pump it up pull a bit... check the engine everything is unplugged pull... set it down on a tire!

That’s it ;)

Now get to work... chop chop LOL.

Thanks for the info and this is why I'm reading your 'first time engine pull' thread over and over....lol

The thing with me is that everything sounds easy when reading, but when it comes to actually doing it, I'm like "I know I'll mess something up"...

I already have the car in service mode when I put the new timing belt and tensioner on to determine how dead the engine was/is, so all I have left are the underneath and wire harness and if I'm honest with myself, it's the wire harness that scares me.
Looking back there at all the wires and hoses puts the shivers and 'WTF' thoughts in my head.....lol
