For filtering and protection, it's just easier to swap the paper filter. Removing the airbox exposes the engine bay to additional dust and dirt that follows the original intake path.
I don't find it necessary to even explore the intake tract until you're at Stage-2 power levels. For about the same money, I bought a preowned set of RS7 intake pipes and a new RS7 airbox, capable of supporting the RS7 turbo upgrade. There's a good video out there of a clean '13 S6 running 10.50s on RS7 turbos and meth through the stock RS7 airbox and his engine bay looks nearly stealth and incredibly clean.
If you have to have an open element filter for the noise, look at SRM's-- it simplifies the intake tract with one solid pipe, increasing the diameter all the way to the compressor inlet.
I was looking at them for the sound. I'm pretty sure on a stock engine you are actually loosing a few hp, but to be fair I just use the car to drive to work, meetings, kids to school etc. I won't miss a few hp, but I will notice the increase in sound which will give me the feeling of going fast on my commute. It's all about having fun, and if the turbos are going to fail from lack of oil anyway, a tiny bit of dirt really isn't going to hurt.
