    A4 B5 quattro 1.8t build

So 2 years ago me and my wife bought a 99 A4.put a clutch in it and blew the oil filter adapter seal....my wife proceeded to drive it and blew it. Now recently i puchased another 058 block with a ATW head. Im using my AEB head of the last engine. Just looking for build suggestions and tips. Goin through the whole engine block is getting honed and cleaned right now. Plan on forged rods new rings pistons from the atw block. Not sure what i want to do for turbo yet. Im trying to do a relatively cheaper build but having all the internals ready for a bigger turbo when i decide to get one. I was also curious on the over clearance crank bearings should i buy them or go with stock clearance? Any tips suggestions or anything is appreciated

Im kind of in the same boat as you. I just picked up my assembled short block a few days ago. 058 block, bored .020 over because it was hydrolocked and the cylinders were badly pitted. Crank was polished and block was line bored. I went with Eagle Rods, Wiseco 81.5mm pistons, stock bearings and clearance. If your cylinder walls are good and dont need a bore, that will save you some money when it comes to pistons. I had a set of stock pistons laying around that I had planned on using, but that didnt happen. So far with the rods, pistons, bearings and machine work/labor, Im around $1400 in.

Thats right about where I am with the machine shop. Cylinder walls are fine so im runnin stock pistons. Eagle rods are what I will be running as well. The head is getting a valve job now amd its coming time to order parts. I like the idea of running stock clearances for ease of checking the bearing clearances. Il post some pics today.

I went stock clearances on my block. Bored .020 with JE 8.5:1 pistons. IE rods. Line honed because ARP main studs.

Ive been debating IE rods with the rifle bore. Price difference is my only concern if its not worth it

Why would you need rifle boring? You have oil squirters.

I understand that i just figured itd give better cooling to the bearings but at the same time drilling holes weakens anything you drill into

Stock rods are rifle drilled, the point of the rifle drilling is to help get oil up to the wrist pin while the engine is at very low rpm. So this is an option good for street driven cars that see plenty of driving in traffic which is why Audi did it on the stock rods.

If no material has been taken off the crank journals then standard size bearings should be used, if material has been taken off then that should be checked and the correct size bearing should then be used. Only time you want to use extra clearance bearings is if you are going to be running a really thick oil and the car is being used for track racing. Running standard weight oil with extra clearance bearings will cause a low oil pressure issue since the larger clearance will increase flow.

I guess I was just thinking of strength with a big turbo build. Didn't think about it being a daily.

The IE Tuscan I beam rods come standard with rifle drilling and Pauter has been offering rifle drilling on their 1.8t rods for a long time now, don't remember it being an option when I got my 1.8t Pauter rods way back in 2003.
