Swapped out front pads and found a sand lot in the wheel well

I noticed something as I was checking things over and found a small playground of sand in the wheel well. There's sort of a shelf just behind the springs and conveniently, it collects a good amount of sand.
Is there a drain in there somewhere? This is another odd Audi find on the B8 as I don't remember this on the B7. This is going to be real good with all the rock salt here.

I pulled out seven of these small handfuls in passenger side. Didn't notice until I mounted the driver's...
