    Ignition switch issues :(

Hey guys, I'm having an issue with my 2010 A4 ignition switch, the push key start. It works well and all, but it wont release the key. Now then, I've already removed the switch and investigated. The coil for the lock is fine and actuates properly when given 12VDC. But the unit never sends power to the coil to allow it to unlock my key, and I'm bewildered as to why. I'm not sure if there is a fuse or something that could be the culprit? Everything works until it should send power to that little coil to unlock it. Any ideas? Or where the wires actually go to so I can check it out further there? I don't want to buy a switch if it's going to do the same thing, since my switch seems fine. Thanks for any knowledge

At long last I have figured out my issue. After spending some time tracing wires with half my interior taken apart, looking at diagrams online which are impossible to find, and metering things, I went back to the age old troubleshooting method. What has changed? The car is currently in project mode, so I have A LOT taken apart. However recently I removed the shifter assembly, long story. Turns out, despite not saying it (it screams "remove key" and I yell "I CAN'T" back), the car locks your key unless it is in Park. After plugging the cord for the shifter back in, because it's in park, it went "click!" and gave me my key back. It should have been obvious to me earlier, but hopefully my brief failure will help someone else sometime.

Also, If you remove your upper fill tank for the windshield washer, plug the hole for the lower tank. I got the unmistakable smell of death, take a wild guess where I narrowed it down to.

I'm trying to swap out my ignition switch - I'm having a tough time removing the support bar next to the steering wheel - did that give you any trouble? There is one bolt in the back I just can't figure out the head on.

    Thank you.

It did indeed. Unfortunately I can't check right now to help you, but I recall it being a large pain to deal with. If I remember, the switch will move backward towards the front of the car, then down. The bolt you're looking at is a spline/triple square/12 point. Size 8 I believe. I looked in my pictures, unfortunately didn't find any of use for you. Good luck
