    B5 A4 in the Gambler 500

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi all, I was hoping to enter into the Gambler 500 this summer, and think I found the perfect car to do it in.

I found a 1999 (and a half?) A4 with a 2.8 v6 for $350. It SOUNDS like the valves got into a fight with the piston, so I am assuming the motor will need to be replaced. (I am basing this off of the clist description as well as the fact that when the timing skipped on my B5 S4, it was bent valves.) I am familiar with the engine out procedure for a B5 S4, and am just checking to see if there are any parts of the process I am missing.

    From the clist description:
"I have a Audi never had a problem with it timing belt snapped I replaced the belt water pump and pullie tried to set it a time my self tries to start it sounded like it wanted to start makes like farting nose if it makes sense I'm done trying my loss is you're gain new tires breaks and rims still have receipt for them as well ass all maintenance receipts CLEAN TITTLE PINK SLIP IN HAND JUST ALONE IN PARTS U CAN MAKE A PROFIT FIRST WITH 350 takes it all I'm not parting out selling AS IS THANKS NAMES ANTONIO HMU IF U HAVE ANY QUESTIONS"

    eg:
    - If i swap in a new motor, will it fire right up? Do I need to "recode" the ECU or anything?
    - What if the motor came out of a tip car? This one is 5MT, so its different from that standpoint.

This is around the goal for the car
    - 31" knobbys, fender flares, "massaged" wheel wells, light bar, etc

If the motor comes from a tip, requires some work. Search for manual transmission conversion.

I'm not sure how you'll fit 31s on it though.

You will need the wheel to be almost completely outside of the body to fit a 31" tire on a quattro B5 A4.
This is (was) my lifted B5. In these pictures it is 4.5" suspension lifted, plus 28" tires. The fender flares were lined up to the stock fender radius height, but then i increased the radius forward and aft of the wheel. With stock fenders, the 28" tire hits the back of the fender and hits the bumper at rest, even when lifted, never mind turning.
If you zoom in to the top of the tire in the last pic, you will see why the wheel would need to stick absurdly far out to fit a 31" tire, when i had 28" tires. 225/70/15's on 15x8 et negative 20

NICE! I;'ve been looking everywhere for an Audi like this for reference.

    Some comments/questions:
    - Wheel wells are NOT going to be left stock. Sawzall/cutting wheel will take care of a lot of that.
    - Where is the lift kit from?
    - Were there any issues with the car after the lift/tires were installed?

    I made the lift kit.
My car was rwd, so I’m not positive, but I appeared to be right at the limit of where the front axles would or would not have worked anymore.

I understand that lots of cutting will take place, just trying to let you know that you will need the entire wheel outside the body to fit a 31”. Someone once did on stock suspension as a joke and that’s exactly what it took.

The top pic is stock suspension in front, and coilovers with 1300lb rear springs cranked all the way up in the rear
Bottom pic is lengthened and strengthend coilovers up front with dual springs equaling out to ~480lb/in, and modified rear control arms and strut mounts with vogtland coilovers and 280lb/in springs

    Were wheel spacers used?

Did you have any interference with the wishbones?

No spacers. The rear tire rubbed the upright when it was new, depending on tire pressure.

Ah OK. How did you fix the rear tire rubbing issue?

Let it rub. It was a negligibleamiunt if rubbing. That’s just how close it was with this offsets and tire size.

Do you recall the offset of those rims? Iam thinking of changing offsets and adding spacers

How did you make the lift kit?
Cut the A-arms and lengthen them?

If you need longer front axles, the C5 A6 V6 axles would probably be your best bet. For an automatic engine, you just need to remove the plug in the end of the crank.

    It's a 5MT Quattro car.

I don't have time to build/test a lift kit, so we're gonna try and see what we can get away with using:
    - Wheel spacers
    - Tons of offset
    - A sawzall
