i have a 2006 avant 2.0t. what would cause smoke to come out while turning and at low speed. pulling into work i make a couple left and right sharp turns before i stop at a gate to get in. sometimes it smokes for about 3-5 seconds and sometimes it doesnt. smells like burning oil. i got 160k on her now with a stage 2 jhm tune. its driving me crazy, it doesnt use oil like most 2.0t's do either. oil in my intercoolers? any ideas?

In my experience best case scenario is a bad valve cover. Do you ever get a misfire or stutter when you see smoke?

Like a gasket, or the actual valve cover? Stutter sometimes.

The valve cover. I’m pretty sure there’s some info out there if you wanted to read about it. Basically the bottom of the valve cover separates.

I had the same problem and it was a cracked valve cover. Huge plume of smoke when I would accelerate.

Mine isn't during acceleration, only at low rpm and while turning.

People are so quick to say its the VC without taking all things into consideration - as you clearly said it was at low speed while turning.

Im more curious as to where the smoke is coming from - engine bay? Exhaust?

Might be a good idea to pop the hood and take a look right when you roll up to that gate. It sounds like oil is dripping onto something super hot and burning

Coming out the exhaust. No leaky valve cover, just had my vacuum pump replaced. Turbo seal going?

You won't see any oil leaks because it's internal. It's very easy to check. 1. take off valve cover 2. look at bottom of valve cover 3. drink beer 4. either order new valve cover or reinstall

    smoking sometimes?

I had the same problem. I believe it's my turbo seal. I used two different catch can setups (one vents to atmosphere and one closed loop) and even put back the OEM valve cover back on. Still smokes. I haven't lost any power just lots of smoke after I turn on the heat. I checked my inter cooler piping and there is minimal oil. IMG_6824.JPG

If your IC pipes are relatively oil free, your VC is probably OK. It's easy enough to check without removing it. I would suspect the TC seals also. How are you driving the car before pulling into work? If you're into the TC it could be very hot and with the oil pressure coming down from max you could have pumping more oil past the seals when you slow to make the sharp turns which would make the smoke easier to see. If that's correct you should be able to recreate the situation. Other than being easier to see at slow speed, the turns may have nothing to do with it - my guess.
