Stupid questions about my new (old) S5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I picked up my "new" car on Sunday, thanks to a forum member who responded to my WTB ad. I haven't had a lot of time to spend fiddling with things, other than the drive home, but I was driving at the time so...

My car is an '09 S5 4.2 / 6MT, all options except adaptive cruise. Also has H&R springs and spacers, AWE Track exhaust, couple other things.

I have a couple general questions the manual and some quick searches here couldn't answer, maybe you guys can:

    1. Car has TPMS, but I can't find anywhere in the menus, nor is it described in the manual, where you can bring up an actual readout of tire pressures. Is TPMS only a sudden deflation warning and I can't actually call up tire pressures?

    2. If I turn on the seat heaters (yes, it's May 1 and I STILL needed them this morning ), do they gradually reduce the setting the longer they are on? I've only got a 15-mile drive to work so I may not have waited long enough.

    3. AUX input - the manual describes it as being in the center console. There's a little square cover there but not the black plastic that I've seen in some pictures. I'm assuming, then, that other than the AMI input cord there's no AUX jack in my car? Is it possible to retrofit one into the center console? Ideally I want to leave my old iPhone in the glove box on the AMI and occasionally put my Android phones on an AUX jack without switching back and forth, and without having cables running all over the interior of the car.

    4. On coasting in neutral: Is it OK for extended distances? I live on top of a mountain (in case you didn't gather that from the name of my town). When I go to work, I can crest the mountain, put the transmission in neutral and coast down the winding mountain road for 5-6 miles. Is this OK? I recall there were some transmissions(they may have been auto boxes, not sure) where most of the lubrication was driven off the input shaft, not the output shaft, so it was bad for the transmission to be in neutral at highway speeds because the output side would be spinning at highway speeds but the input, and therefore the lubrication, would only be supplied engine idle speed. Anyone have any experience?

More to follow. Sorry for the crappy cellphone pic but I've only had the car 1 day.

Oh, one more. Car only came with one key. I need to get a second. Can I just get a used one off eBay and have the dealer program it? Or is there something I need to know about buying a second fob? Car does have keyless ignition.

    1. Yes there is no readout of actual pressure.
    2. Not sure, I don't use mine.
    3. There is no AUX cord, there is an adapter for the AMI that lets you use a headphone jack. I've seen people route a cable to the center console.
    4. I don't know, but also not sure why you would want to be in neutral vs using the gears to control speed.
    5. I believe a key can only be programmed once, so if its a new key it should work. It has to be programmed at a dealer though, so I'd give them a call and see if they will even do this, or force you to buy one from them.

Also side note I lived in Wilkes-Barre for 5 years while I went to Wilkes U.

    1. So, if you press "Car" on the center console you can scroll down to Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It won't show you pressure, but, you can reset the light if you've filled the tires after having the light come on.

    2. The heated seats stay on whatever setting you out them at. 1 is lowest, 6 is hottest. But, I'd imagine if they were getting too hot, there is a temperature sensor to prevent any unsafe heat output that could maybe let it cool for a minute or two.

    3. If you look in the glove box and see a small slide out tray, there is either some sort of cable in there or an adapter for a cable. You may need to purchase the Audi AMI/MMI aux cable to work with it. I did, it was like ~$10 on Amazon.

    4. Coasting in neutral is 100% safe for extended periods of time. But, you'll actually use more fuel and wear your brakes faster. As long as it's not uncomfortably loud with your exhaust, it's smarter to coast down hill in a gear to keep your speed from gaining if it's an extended down hill trip. This is because if you're going down hill in gear, the injectors aren't running most times. The engine keep turning by the momentum of the car and wheels. Where as if you're in neutral the injectors need to run to keep the engine idling. Try and keep your RPM's around 3,000 while coasting down hill in gear and you'll again, save fuel, your brakes, and it won't hurt the car at all. Engine braking should he safe as long as you aren't keeping your RPM's excessively high for extended periods of time (like 6,000+)

Perfect! I was wondering what the engine was actually doing with the fuel when coasting. I know in my old carb'ed stuff the high vacuum when coasting in gear actually sucks more fuel from the bowl. I always kind of suspected that was how they managed FI engines but never had it confirmed. Thank you!

Also, as far as the AMI inputs, I do have both the iPod cable and an extended-length AUX cable. I guess later cars have an AUX jack in the center console too. It's called out in the owner's manual but I guess that came along after my car. The manual shows a little black plastic square that serves as a lid for the jack, but my car has a filler panel there. Thanks!

There’s also an option to have Bluetooth streaming instead of using an AUX through the ami/mmi using a Bluetooth dongle such as this one from viseoo.

I have one of those. Can't get it to work. But I don't want to have to control anything through the phone (although I'd have to with the AUX jack too). I have Androids, so as I understand it you can't control anything through the MMI anyway.

I have a 8.5 so I am not sure if it is different. Mine has 3 levels. Initially it will come on at 3 but will drop to 2 after 15 minutes (which I hate)

Aha! Just got the Tune2Air working. Much better! Now I don't have to pay for another Sirius subscription. :)

OK, I have another question after putting a few miles on the car. When I put the clutch in for a shift, it seems mostly in the lower gears 1-2 and 2-3, the throttle seems to "hang" and the RPMs stay up higher even though the clutch is in and my foot is off the gas. Is the computer "blipping" the throttle for me to smooth out those lower gear shifts? I thought I read something about that somewhere.
Or is something wrong? If I leave the clutch in, for instance if I am just coasting up to a stop, the RPMs drop to idle after a few seconds.

That's how the car was designed from the factory, my guess is to be a bit more comfortable oriented. Most ECU tunes will remove the low RPM rev hang. I believe it hangs when shifting below around 2,200 RPM.
