Sunroof (entire roof of car?) is constantly creaking and popping

Does anybody else have this issue? I took it to Audi and they said there is currently no fix for this. Feels pretty weird to have such a nice car yet it sounds like it was terribly assembled.

My headliner squeaked, but my sunroof was noise free. Audi replaced my headliner and now my sunroof makes unbearable cracks and pops. It seems that the frame got distorted or bent and you can see the waves in the frame. It’s at the dealership now and staying there until it’s noise free. I find your dealerships response unacceptable.

There are similar threads stating to torque some of the sunroof bolts, which fixed the issues.

Do you happen to have a link about this bolt torquing?

I have the issue, but I fear taking it to the dealer will just give me more trouble than its worth. Last thing I want is them ripping my car apart.

Is that where the noise comes from? Started getting similar sounds, can’t tell where it’s coming from, will focus upwards now.

    Audi’s are creaky buzzy cars.

i had a ticking type noise, like metal clicking on plastic when my sunroof was open / cracked. They replaced the entire sunroof unfortunately. It doesnt make noises anymore but i also didnt know about the bolt torquing then.

It seems like every RS 3 has this problem, I haven't brought it up with my dealer yet but I do plan to try torquing the bolts

Your dealership is lying to you. There is a TSB for sunroof fix, I just had 2 fixes which didn't solve it then they ordered a new sunroof frame and had that installed a couple weeks ago.

    Parts replaced:

    1 8V5-877-045-D Frame
    1 8XO-898-814 Rubber
    2 D-004-660-M2 2K Glue

Seems you have to do your own research and hound audi for these issues, latest ECU flash was released couple weeks ago, I ask my SA and he says nothing out yet. Email he next day with proof of ECU flash update and was told "oh yah it looks like it came out 2 weeks ago" so i asked him why he didnt have the information the other day when I asked about it.......Crickets.

A TSB like this would usually be implemented on the production line at some point, so it's possible the dealer is correct, depends on when OP got his car.

My sunroof thus far is rattle free, center console has a little squeak here and there. Time will tell I guess.

You might be correct, but from the information i have is the all parts are the same. After talking to the SA he said more or less its an issue with the installation with the adhesive used.

Exactly same thing as Paul. Bad new is that you will go back and forth a couple times until you have to wait on Audi ca/us for their decision on frame replacement which could be a lil bit then wait till you receive the part and from the looks of it theres a bit of work so more downtime. So I didn't want to have that super annoying creaking throughout the summer so i gt on them asap.

This was one of the threads I saw with a solution. There was at least another one with possibly pictures.

I've had mine in twice now, kind of knocking rattle type sound, especially when vented. The SA acknowledged there is a TSB but says they have to go through the steps of adding felt the first time, adding felt and checking bolts the second time, and then maybe the third time I can get it replaced? Not sure if that will even work, but that's where I'm at now.

Holy shit, they basically have to take half the car apart just to troubleshoot the sunroof creaks? fuck that, no way they are ripping my car apart, i can live with the creaks. Basically already have for 9 months.

Yep. Felt didn’t help mine, either.

This is correct or at least same as me. First the felt, second the adjustment of set screws and add extra felt if deemed so, third was to replace the frame.

Yep alot involved like i mentioned, all to their own. Personally im not going years with creaks, and just settle for it is what it is. When i had these creaks I also then didn't want to use my sunroof because of said issues.

To all the above is the fix for the sunroof like it or leave it, but this is Audi's solution. Sunroof has no issues yet to report after the replacement frame has been installed.

I had a S3 and it is the same roof and mine was cracking all the time specially pulling from my garage on the ramp in a angle. Given the size of the roof I wouldn't panic.

I just found this old thread and the solution suggested seems to have worked. It takes literally a minute or two to complete.

    Had my first service yesterday.

Got them to have a look at the creaking sunroof in the vented position.

They dumped what seemed like an entire can of some incredibly bad stinking lube into the sunroof and not only did it not fix the issue, the entire sunroof now shudders badly when opening... Very unhappy. My wife picked up the car and literally drove out of the dealership, opened the sunroof and saw it violently shuddering and turned around and took the car right back. To which they said since the loan car was needed the next day we would have to come back next month to have them look at it again!

When my wife got home I immediately proceeded to get as much lube out of the sunroof as possible (it was even on my seats), and re-lubed it with some much more smartly placed spots of white lithium grease, which mostly cured the shudder they induced, though still does it slightly...

    Creaking is still there....

Had to park the car in the garage last night with all windows down and the sunroof completely open to try and get rid of some of the stench.

I have managed to remove 'most' of the shudder, but when the sunroof is in its last 1/4 of the opening sequence it still shudders quite a bit there, I am thinking a little grease in the right spot will stop it.

Does anybody know the service manual steps (if you have info can you post it on how to remove the glass) for what they probably did? I might be dared enough to remove the sunroof glass myself and poke around in there.

I just know mine is going to creak. I have had the car 3 weeks and yet to open the sunroof, of course i have 223 miles on it and its freaking hot but I just had my springs done and I went around a corner hard to test things and I heard it creak.

Hillarous, 69k car and the most basic of issues. I have 4 Audi dealerships with a stones throw so I am sure I will get to try them all out.

Funny, our SQ5 and RS4 had zero issues.

Thankfully mine does not creek fully open. Only in vent position. so that's a 'plus'.

This is why I avoid dealers... goodness...what a poop show. Go in to fix one thing, come out without it being fixed and now you have a new issue.

I have 2k miles on mine and have yet to have this specific creaking issue (although something does rattle from underneath the passenger seat or maybe passenger front door intermittently). Hopefully it doesn't pop up as i continue to actually drive the car...
