Question on rear view mirror upgrade to auto-dimming with compass

So my windshield in my 2003 A4 B6 Avant Quattro (Manual 5-speed) has developed a windshield crack. Since I'll be getting a new windshield, I would like to go ahead an upgrade the manual rear view mirror to one with the auto-dimming and compass features. I read some other threads, but still have a question:

If I want plug and play as far as the connectors at the mirror and sunroof control panel, what are my options? I think I can use one from a B6 that has the oval blacked out section for the compass and no buttons on the mirror. Can I also use one of the slightly newer ones (from a B7 I think) that has the power button and "hidden" compass portion as well? Do those have the same connector or not?

I also know I will need to tap the power wire at the orange connector in the footwell, but I would rather not have to splice wires up by the mirror.

    Any info would be appreciated.

cant tell regarding the B7 ones, I got an A6 mirror pn: 4Z7 857 511, the one with no buttons, the sensor in the glass itself, with compass. Its a great interior upgrade coming from the basic mirror.

Yes, both mirror options would work and are the same connector.

As far as splicing, it depends on if your car is pre-wired for the mirror and has the wiring/connector up there. If it doesn't, you'll have to splice somewhere as the mirror will need to get power.

I like the compass, compared to cars without it.
Had no idea it's an option to not have it, if that's what you're saying.

I think mine has a button in the center that turns green when On, to show that the auto-dimming is now on. To make headlights in the rearview more bearable.
or if I click to turn it off, then they become brighter because the auto-dimming stops.
Once I drove a B6 without that feature, and it seemed less comfortable. Reminded me of my old lesser-spec'd car that was similar (also didn't have it).
Plus, some cars behind might have their high-beams on, or headlights not aimed properly.

But at the same time, there's either no tint or light tint, so it's not hard to see out the glass.

Not sure how to retrofit this. But some other info; there may also be a black version, instead of light grey. Such as S4 vs. A4.
