Long story short. My fuel pump died. Got a new one put in and it still cranks awhile before starting. Had put in a new filter 8k miles ago. Runs fine once started.. until fuel is less than 1/4 tank. Then I run the risk of stalling. When disconnecting filter, I've never had fuel spray all over the place as some people describe. There is no pressure.

    1) what's the best way/thing to buy to check fuel pressure at rail cheaply.
    2) where is the valve to hold pressure in lines? Pump or filter?
    3) could a vacuum leak cause this?
    4) where else could cause fuel pressure leak? Injectors?

2004 b6 1.8t Quattro w 170k miles. Going to put in another delphi pump today just to eliminate getting a bad pump. Also have silicone breather hose replacement from 034motorsports and MAF coming. (Unplugging MAF while running has 0 effect). Thanks. This car has been to mechanic twice in 110k miles mostly due to these forums.

I had a similar issue and it ended up being the coolant temp sensor. Dealer tried to tell me the fuel pump, of course they didn’t look at the car I just stopped in quick to ask them what might be the case.

    All Over!

I would be looking at the fuel pressure regulator.

A ruptured diaphragm would cause an excessive fuel return to the tank.
