Trans output shaft seal. Driveshaft won't drop down.

Changing the output shaft seal. Removed the six hex bolts, gave it a couple wacks to break the seal, but now the driveshaft won't drop down. It's loose, however there's definitely something that's still getting caught and I can't get the driveshaft more than half way down. I can compress that joint a little bit towards the rear of the car but there still isn't enough clearance to drop it down and out of the way.

Everything I've read seems to say that once the seal is broken it pretty easily drops down. Not sure what's getting caught.

If all the bolts are taken out and it is still attached, try engaging the ebrake and manually rotate one of the front wheels. Should be enough force to overcome the trans bonding to the CV joint on the driveshaft.

Second what V70R states. Mine didn’t pop loose right away. After a few turns back and forth of the wheel, it finally popped loose. After that, everything was smoother. Good luck.

Ok I'm back. Had a busy week and trying to finish this up now.

I actually the 2 separated when I posted this. It was a matter of getting the driveshaft to drop down, even though it was loose. Kept getting hung up on the output flange. I eventually got it with some finagling.

Now as I'm trying to put it back together, I'm getting the same problem in reverse. Took a picture this time. That inner most part of the CV won't clear the flange. The outer parts can be compressed in but that middle circle doesn't move. Is this normal? Hard to tell with all the grease if there's anything that can be done with that CV.

Can you try and compress the rear portion of the driveshaft by pushing it back to get enough clearance? It may require an extra set of hands, but try loosening the carrier bearing (two 13mm bolts) and then pushing the driveshaft towards the rear of the vehicle to get enough clearance. Just make sure the bolts are re-tightened in the same location they previously were.

I had to do this when replacing my clutch (dropped tranny). Compress the driveshaft back and you should just have enough room to slide it up and get a couple bolts in. Don't forget to put a golf ball sized amount of fresh CV grease on it.
