    Vibrations question - HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What else can case steering wheel vibrations apart from the wheels+tyres ?

Have new wheels in, everything balanced twice, alignment done ( not related to vibration).

    What else ?
Should go and get new set of decent brand tyres ? But if there is something wrong with them then this should be picked up / fixed when balancing is done?

Update : Is shows at 90-100kph only.

If you didn't have the vibration before switching to new wheels. Maybe you need hub rings. Not sure if you verified the hub size.

The shop installed hub rings, plastic ones.
Sounds like the hub rings since the wheel is balanced as I don’t see what else could cause it.....

Is metal better than plastic ?

My new wheels bore is 66.50mm
I guess our cars is 57mm

Plastic ones should work fine as long as they are made decently.

Are you running spacers? I have a set of 5mms that don’t fit the hubs exactly (they must be made to poor tolerances or something—they’re the “right size” but there’s play if I put them on the hub and try to move them around) and it causes pretty nasty vibrations that feel just like an out-of-balance tire.

No spacers. I need to get some good quality rings and see if that helps, will try Aluminium
Usually if I take the wheel off they stay attached to it, before I had Aluminium but it was not easy to take wheel off and I guess there was no vibrations until the shop swapped it for me after I complained.

Thanks guys, will start with the rings and see.

Put old wheels back on and see if you still have the vibration. Otherwise, brake rotors, brake pads, steering rack, tie rods, etc.. can cause vibration in steering.

Don’t have the old wheels, cheapest and easiest approach would be to try the rings.

If the brake disks are the cause then I should have vibrations only when braking.

    Tie rod are good

How steering rack can cause it ?

    Is shows at 90-100kph only.

This. Good quality rings can be made of either material - plastic or aluminum. I prefer plastic. They're easier to install/remove, and are simply there to center the wheel before it is torqued down. The hub shouldn't be bearing any load whether they're aluminum or plastic... If they are the proper size you should have no issues. Check this sizing on the hub rings.

And yeah, try different rings if you want (since its so cheap).

Had it not been for you getting new wheels I would have suggested to get the wheel balance checked first, then wheel bearing. it would be quite the coincidence if the wheel bearing decided to go out right when you got new wheels, but I've seen crazier things happen

If it’s the bearings then why vibration shows at certain speed, or I’m wrong here ?

Bearings are weird. Sometimes you can tell at any speed, sometimes it’s at certain speeds. Again, it would an interesting coincidence if that’s what’s going on, but it was one of the first things I thought of.

Do you feel the vibration from a certain wheel? Certain side of the car?

Yes, I feel it at the driver side (I could be wrong) which and if it’s a misbalanced wheel then you will look at the rear left, have rotated the wheels and no luck.

From what i know, bad bearing will not vibrate if you Drive is straight line, only when turning.... as you said weird and replacing them is pain, damn.

Bad alignment could cause it as well, will take it to the dealer to do alignment and see if that changes anything before bearings

Well, try different hub rings first before you start throwing money at it

Aluminum hub rungs are a night mare. I had a set on for about 36 hours and even with antiseize they were still stuck to the hub and when I got a flat took a long time with some pliers on the side of the road to get them off. Check that they are the correct size and maybe rotate the tires around and see if the vibration changes. Were the tires road force balanced. New tires often have balance/vibration issues.

I had the same issue when I changed rims from oem 57.1 to Dezent 70.1. I used 2 kind of plastic centering rings and I still got vibration at around 90 km/h. Switched back to old rims - no vibration. Sold the Dezents with profit and bought audi BBS rims - no vibration.

Which I should go for, My new wheels bore is 66.50mm and the car is 57mm

So I go for 57.1 - 66.6 mm ? Kinda dump question but better to ask :)

Check the centerbore measurement of the wheel yourself. It is probably 66.6 or 66.56 as that is Mercedes CB and what most 5x112 wheels are made to. And your car is 57.1mm.

The wheel specs on Rotiform website says 66.5mm, just called the shop I got the wheels from and they said you need 66.6.

A tenth of a millimeter is an ok variance, if you find yourself with aluminum rings that are a bit too large to go easily into the wheel just toss them in the freezer for an hour or so beforehand.

When torquing the wheels try to do it in the air using the brakes to stop the hubs from rotating, torque to 89 ft-lbs first in a star pattern followed by a circle.

If you still experience vibration after this it may be worth getting what is referred to as a "roadforce" balance, this uses a roller against the tire to detect manufacturing problems with the wheel or tire.

Lastly, be sure you are using the proper bolts for the wheels, many aftermarket wheels use cone seat bolts while OEM Audi and VW are ball seat, the two are not interchangeable.

Something worth to mention which is important but slipped my mind

A while back I was driving and felt strong vibrations, it was on the old wheels, stopped and the rear left wheel was loose, so I tighten it.
I started to feel this light vibrations after that, since I don’t drive 90kmh a lot due to traffic so I noticed it a while later.

what could’ve been damaged from driving with loose wheel, it’s was very short drive.

I don't even bother with rings anymore. They can be off. Just put the wheel on and rock it back and forth ilwhile tightening the first bolt. Then rock it back and forth while installing the second bolt. That will perfectly center it. I never had vibrations when installingrims that way.

Replaced the plastic rings with aluminium and the vibration is gone.

^ that didn’t help but Vibrations are gone finally, as simple as it appears but this one was a bitch, went down to basics to make sure my aftermarket wheel is centred and no luck, until I used a bigger size rings which I had to push them in to the wheel hole with a rubber hammer and now zzzzzzero vibrations.

    I bought 67.1 mm - 57.1 mm instead of 66.6 mm - 57.1 mm.
