Is This Going To Eat Audi’s Lunch?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does Buick (gasping breath heard) have a chance to take the little amount of wind in Audi’s sails with the new TourX?

Fully loaded at $41k and on paper is about the size of an A6 Avant (which we don’t get stateside).

Buick is working hard to steal allroad customers.... they’ve been working me over..... including an extended drive of one starting tomorrow.

    Discuss.

    1. Station wagons aren't very popular in north america to begin with.

    2. It's a Buick.

Cadillac has been trying to rebrand itself from an "old people" car and has actually been doing a good job but it was a long process.

It's not a bad looking car though.

Those are the exact challenges facing Buick. But, they seem to be putting a lot on the line pushing the Regal line.

It looks good, but that's because it looks like an Allroad and a Volvo at the same time, and nothing like a Buick

There will be no to probably very limited aftermarket support for it. I would rather a used Cadi, Merc or Jag wagon before a Buick. But kudos to them for actually selling a wagon in the states.

I saw one while I was driving home from work yesterday. It's looks good. From a distance, before I caught up to it, I thought it was a VW wagon that I wasnt aware of and got excited. The front end/grill is boring. Also dont like how the tail lights stick out.

The Buick won’t eat Audi’s lunch but this Jaguar might. If I only had $70 large to throw at it.

That jag maybe one of the nicest wagons available in north america.

A different price point though from the allroad, maybe if the rs4 was released here.

I honestly really didn't look at other brands when purchasing my allroad, in fact, the biggest competition may have been the Q5 and I did not want that.

I think most of allroad owners pretty much had their minds made up that they wanted the allroad before they bought it.

Over the past few weeks I keep seeing a Volvo V90 wagon which doesn't look to bad. But the Buick.....uh no.

Just picked a TourX up an hour ago for an extended drive. Right off the bat.... the Bose sound system is spectacular.

I've seen a couple of those in Portland area lately also. They are very nice. I'd love to see one with some sport springs and custom wheels.

Disclaimer....I am a Buick guy...I have a few at home that are moderately modified. Anyway, it probably will have pretty big support. There is a company that started with the Wbodies (blown 3.8s), that pretty much does all GM work. They've been doing the blown and turbo 2.0s for years with a full slew of products. www.zzperformance.com Everything from tunes to turbo upgrades.

Concur...the price is right for the Buick, which leaves money for the few mods that could be done (wheels, suspension) but that grill is butt ugly.

Maybe with the Regal GS front end it’d look better. http://www.buick.com/sedans/regal-gs-luxury-sedan

IIRC the Buick is based on an Opel, GM has since sold Opel to PSA (Peugeot) so these will be made by Opel under PSA ownership and sold to GM. I'm not sure how that will play out going forward. On the plus side they will be made in Germany though.

I saw the motor trend article on the comparison between this, the outback and the alltrack. It won, but I think the grill and the rear need to change, and the interior needs a serious step up if it wants to compete with the allroad.

Several forms of collision avoidance, lane departure, active braking, etc. I call them savior features because they save bad drivers from doing stupid things.

After putting my hands and eyes on the TourX at the Denver Auto Show, I say they are aiming more at Subaru owners that want a step up and not Allroad owners wanting to trade similar or step down (depending on trim level of Allroad vs. TourX). While the exterior is great to look at, and the versatility is great, the let down isn't the interior as a whole, its the damn small gauge / instrument cluster. Compare the B8.5 Allroad cluster to the TourX release makes me think that GM still have designers stuck in the 1990s. The font is aged, colors are not appealing and the size of the tach and speedmeter require you to squint to focus on. It's way too small and dense; for something that I need to see and look at every time I step into the vehicle, this should be one of the focal points of the designers... And the TourX did not get any good treatment.

Is This Going To Eat Audi’s Lunch?

After my time in the TourX, the ultimate question for me is, would I make the change from my current allroad into the new TourX? No.
    IMG_1017.JPG

Not because it isn’t a good vehicle, it’s that it could be better.
    IMG_1021.JPG

The suspension is fine, but the 50-series tires make it feel a bit soft. A 19-inch wheel on 45’s may fix that.

The engine is a great little power plant, smooth, quiet, smooth power delivery with nearly undetectable turbo lag, but the transmission does the engine an injustice. It’s clearly programmed for fuel efficiency and fires off quick shifts in manual mode, but when in D..... your foot has to really get down deep the get the transmission to go where you need it.

The inside driving experience from a comfort level is right there. Seats are good, it’s church like quiet and the Bose sound system is fantastic. The pano-roof is HUUUUGE!!
    IMG_1018.JPG

The Nav/info system, IntellILink system is really, really good. It’s fast, it’s intuitive and very easy to navigate.
    IMG_1009.JPG

I do have some other nit-picks, but there are also some aspects of the car that are excellent. More on that later.

I liked the initial pictures I saw of it, but then I think Jalopnik had a pure side shot of it, and I just thought it looked awful. Too much rear overhang and I hate the chrome running down the entire side.

I've noticed that the pure side shot is not an angle I've seen in official photos that I've seen (and I understand why).

Hmm, didn't catch that before but it is a bit off putting, I wonder if it would be better if it followed the front of the c pillar instead? It's hard to find a car that looks great from all angles, I was behind and to the side of a new Miata RF the other day and it looked awful whereas it looks pretty good from most other angles IMO.
