Help, Leaking from pipe above engine

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

Had a quick question about a leak that I have noticed in my engine bay.

I noticed that some crud was gathering around the area circled in yellow in the picture attached (by the dipstick), and there is now fluid collecting below the pipe on the engine. (The picture is not my car).

Does anyone have any idea what that part is and what I should do about it?

    Thanks!!!

That's the high pressure power steering line (goes back to the steering rack). I don't think it leaks like that though, not from there. That could be oil building up coming from your valve covers. Do you have any buildup around the screws in the cover below where you circled? VC's are a leak point.

I agree, I dont believe that line can leak right from there, but I may be wrong. Firsts things first, send a picture of YOUR engine. Then, I'd recommend using a hose and degreasing that area and scrubbing nice and clean. Then you can figure out whats leaking and from where.

    Hey! Thanks for the response!

I will try and get a picture of the actual situation tonight and get back to you.

There was a small amount pooled in the area below, between the screw holes on the metal under where the bend of the steering line is in the picture. Could it be steering fluid then that is leaking?

Mine weeps a little. Enough to leave a gummy mess on the valve cover. for the ridiculous price of a new one i can live with it though

Yes, please send pictures. That area you're describing is right where the thermostat is on this engine. Its also next to the infamous upper power steering hose which is made of rubber and often gets old and cracks/leaks. Take the front engine cover off (the V6-3.0 cover, it just pulls up) and get some photos for us. Otherwise, we are just speculating

Also describe the color of the fluid that's leaking and what the consistency is of it.

So here are some pictures of my engine bay before and after cleaning.

The gunk didnt really come off very well so I will have to hit it with a degreaser to get it more clean. The stuff that remains is pretty sticky.

Oh wow. Yeah it looks like that line has developed a crack/leak on you. Its the upper power steering hose. Should be an easy replacement, but pricey at $200+. The number is "8E0422893M". Looks like Rock Auto has a sub $200 fix that contains the crush washers to install. Should be a straight forward replacement.

I have no idea. Maybe JB weld? The problem is, this pipe is likely rotted which is causing your problem/leak. Its gonna probably keep on finding a new place to leak. Considering its a high pressure line, I dont think any sort of sealant will fix the problem, but I'm not honestly sure.

not familiar with the 3.0 power steering line setup but if it’s similar to the 2.7t in that the high pressure line is a two part line, the line coming off the pump does not have a restricter in it (looks like it from your picture). If that’s the case, pull the line that is leaking off the car and bring it to a shop that rebuilds hydraulic lines. I just had this done for the similar hose on my 2.7t motor and it was $50 to have it repaired.
