B6 S4 not turning over when warmed up. Need input please

Pretty much as what it states in title. I have looked around online and couldn't really find an answer. Battery is only a year old (Braille), starter is brand new. Car was firing up after letting it cool down and no CELs. Symptoms are when you try to start it makes a single click in engine bay without turning over. My only other "guess" would be needing a new relay or possibly ignition switch. 192k miles on the clock, something electrical is shorting out. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

It could be a grounding issue. Typical areas are the grounding bars up by the battery (the bolts get corroded from water sitting because the drains clog up). More recently, on my allroad I had a bad ground on the grounding strap on the engine by the mount. No idea how it happened, but it would also give me the single click and nothing.

The only other thing I can think of that might do this is a temp sensor somewhere.

Is this on the car that was swapped to a manual transmission?

I can second a grounding issue. Or a battery terminal issue at that. Make sure to check all your electrical connections to the engine and at the battery terminals. Also make sure to check the ground cable and ground strap on the passenger side. It also could be a starter solenoid that is starting to go causing a single click situation.

There is also a relay under the ECU. It is basically the whole engine relay LOL they tend to go bad over time and can cause starting and or drivability issues

Hey Vinny! Battery terminals are all good for sure. This is the car with the recent manual swap and everything just started to happen just as soon as the clutch broke in (800 miles). I will check all grounding locations today. As for the relay I checked it last night and didn't see any corrosion or visual signs of being defective. Starter solenoid is definitely not the issue since I had just replaced the starter a few days ago thinking that was the issue #doh!

Something else you can try to help narrow it down as a bad wire would be to take a multimeter and connect your negative probe to the engine and you're positive probe to the starters positive terminal. When you get the click, pay attention to the voltage and see if it drops way down

Right i was thinking about that too. Remove the relay and put a jumper in it, the one under ecu and see if that helps

Like I mentioned before the battery terminals are super clean and it only occurs when I have been when I try to start it again after operating temp. After letting the car cool down (30minutes) it started right up without an issues and started the other 6 times I tested throughout the evening last night.

I had similar issue with a car I owned before, a BMW, I have to wait to cool down before it will turn over. Swapped the starter and done.

Have you tried to supply direct 12V to your stater when warm ? To eliminate any other issue along the way ....

I had swapped the starter a couple days ago thinking that was the issue and it still remains. Going to double check all ground wires tonight

So I ended up jumping the car twice and it started right up..My test reader was showing 12.4 V when I attempted to crank the engine.. I have had the Braille 21lb battery for about a year and a half...stong possibility that its dying

After checking ground wires, connections, relays, I think you might be onto something with the battery.... battery doesn't have enough juice to turn over the starter if I let the car sit for 15-30 minutes... If the car stays in a spot for over 4 hrs, it seems it has enough juice to turn over the ignition...

I have had the Braille 21lb battery for 1.5 years now. The car was in the shop for a good month without the battery in the car, I am not sure if the battery not be used that long could have SHORTENED its lifespan?

I managed to test the car 3 times today when it wouldn't turn over. Two tests consisted of jumping the car, both times and it immediately fired up. The other test was charging battery with a trickle and once again it fired up once the charger read "ready".

I do have some draw from my RNS-E after I turn off car and that typically lasts for 5 minutes til it finally shuts off... I pulled the fuse to the stereo so I am going to see if thats the culprit.. Its a long shot but all I can do is trial and error

I bet with 99% certainty that it is your Braille battery. I have not heard very good things about them. Sure they are significantly lighter but seem to have a high failure rate.

I would try a standard battery and see if you still have the same problems. Optima Red top would be my choice.

Definitely going after an Optima Red. Also wanted to add that I have getting some feedback in all the speakers from my RNS-E... Not sure if that could be assisting to the failure, I pulled the radio fuse tonight and will attempt to drive tomorrow.

UPDATE: So battery was on its way out (13% life) so I replaced with the red optima... Still had the same issue. My guys bypassed the clutch switch wiring for ignition and put a jumper in place located in the fuse box in engine bay. The car was reading .2V when the starter solenoid was receiving power and NOT turning over before rewiring. Its only been a day so far since the rewiring but the car has started every time.
