    Intermittent start up problems

    Damn this car is starting to piss me off lately. Think I have some electronic gremlins. First I thought I had a trans issue but I think it was a sensor. but since then I have had some strange electrical glitches. Last few days I have had 2 ignition issues. I can hear the car trying to start up but unless i rev it it just dies. Happened twice now. Battery is displaying around 14v which sounds about right. Once it's been started I can turn it off and right back on.
    What could it be? Fuel pump, coil packs, plugs?
    I'm sick of taking it in for mods or updates blah blah blah I just wanna drive the pissing thing.

    Car is stage 2 with 31,000 miles. No fault codes stored.

    If it continues it may just get a sea burial.

    Never had a single fault with my S4.

    Good. I think OBD11 and APR dongle only show the code if there's a CEL.

    Have you checked the turbos they might be on the way out. Choking the engine on start up.

    If it is still under warranty, you may wish to put on the stock intake and flash the ECU back to stock, before taking into the Audi dealer.

    Intermittent start up problems

    I have this issue as well and somehow the dealer could not replicate the problem and couldnt properly diagnose the fault, so Im curious to see what your findings are. No CEL and VCDS scans show no codes regarding this.
    Life is too short to drive boring cars.

    Do you have an S6 as well? What year?
    I'm guessing an injector or spark plug. It could be not enough daily miles but it's strange.

    2013 S6, sparkplugs were just replaced 5k miles ago, I haven't checked the injectors since its a lot of effort to get to and dont want to have to go through all that and find out that its something else. Yeah it is strange because most days it starts up just fine and randomly it will have this problem. So far I've learned to manage to deal with it but it does become a nuisance and slightly embarassing when it happens in the middle of a crowd of people.

    Oh and not sure if its maybe worth a mention but Im stage 2 EPL with Milltek dp's and catback.

    This event also occured while on stock and stage 1
    Life is too short to drive boring cars.

    Someone mentioned checking the turbos but are they even needed for start up? There's no boost required to turn the car over. How many miles do you a day?
    What could it be?
    Battery
    Relay
    Injectors
    Coil Packs
    Plugs
    Fueling issue

    If there are no fault codes I'm just at a loss of where to look next.

    Hard to start is one of the symptoms of the bad turbo TSB.

    Turbos were replaced under warranty. Turbos were inspected and runs fine
    Life is too short to drive boring cars.

    If they're not spinning freely then they're essentially blocking the intake.

    Absolutely, I was just helping to clear up why they could cause startup issues. The car would most likely be running like sh!t overall as well.

    You just need to get the vcds hooked up to see what the car's telling you. If you're taking it to the dealer, remove the software first.

    a bad coil would definitely throw a CEL.

    I’m thinking fuel pressure isn’t holding, so the first few cranks are basically priming the pressure on the injector rail.

    Does it only happen overnight, or between daily start/stops?

    As has been said before get a VCDS full scan...it must not be something super serious or emissions related as no CEL stored.

    It almost sounds like a sticky secondary air valve causing vacuum leak type conditions until it gets running then all is fine. Probably wouldnt throw a CEL but would likely be stored and shown in a VCDS scan.

    It would be the best $300 you spend...believe me.

    Zero codes or faults stored. Flashing back to stage 1 until I get the downpipes.
    Also ordered new plugs as they are the original ones and have 31k on them. Technician mentioned I could have melted the stock cats.

    Yeah I did a post about this. Wanted to test it out before I got the downpipes. Could be that's the problem. Back on stage 1 now. Downpipes here next month. I read there is a v1.2 for stage 2 which helps start up issues. But I had no fault codes.
    Ordered new plugs just in case as they're original with 31000 on them and has been tuned from new.

    Update: shop couldn't find any fault codes. I have checked all connections under the bonnet as well and just made sure none were lose. One might have been but couldn't be sure if that was the issue. Didn't have a start up issue that day. Then went to shop flashed back to stage 1 just in case. No more issues. Technician suggested could be plugs as they've seen stage 1 burn through them in under 10,000 miles. Or melted cats.
    Either way so far not a single problem. My guess is there was a lose connection but will never know.

    Did see that APR have a stage 2 v1.2 for start up issues

    Glad you got it sorted out. With no codes, I'm going with the stage 2 ECU file as the culprit. If you're swapping plugs, consider going with the RS7 OEM plugs. They are a heat range cooler and are probably a good idea if you're going stage 2 again once you get downpipes.
