    jonan's build thread

i keep jacking other people's threads so i figured it would be best to start my own to ask any questions i'm going to have...

anyway, after having my k04 for less than a month, i got bored with it and ordered a gt2860rs...in order to future proof my motor in the event i get bored of the gtrs, i have the following parts on order:

    • IE drop in rods w/ rifle drilling
    • IE billet press fit timing gear
    • fluidampr crank pulley
    • new oil pump, chain, and pickup tube
    • all gaskets from bottom of motor to top
    • IE/ARP fastener kit - ULTIMATE
    • goetze OE piston ring set
    • mahle/vandervell race bearings
    • JHM stage III lwsmfw RS4 clutch kit
    • ferrea valve springs, retainers, exhaust vales, and intake valves
    • IE valve guides
    • APR exhaust manifold
    • T25 housing for GTRS to use with APR exhaust manifold (CANCELLED,spoke with 034 and they are going to source me a full frame GT2860RS and refund the difference on the eliminator kit)
    • bosch 550cc injectors
    • 034 TIP with 2.5" inlet and 2.75" MAF
    • motoza tune

    tools i need to order:

    • piston ring compressors
    • piston ring pliers
    • piston ring file
    • motor lift and stand
    • feeler gauges/plastigauge
    • possibly tools for a valve job

i'm also considering replacing the cam chain tensioner, but i haven't had any problems with it...i just dropped a shit ton of money on parts so now i'm starting to get a bit cost conscious after looking at my amex bill ...i may just take care of that when it actually starts to fail...

before i swap the t25 housing onto the eliminator, i'm going to send it, along with the APR exhaust manifold, to jethot and get ceramic coated with a gun metal top coat to match the gun metal powder coat i did to the intake manifold and 034 coilpack cover a few years ago...i plan on covering the hotside with a PTP turbo blanket once it is installed...

i spoke with motoza and they said they could adjust the dwell time to match the r8 coilpacks i've been using the past few weeks...which is good because my car doesn't like them sometimes during cold morning startups...i can feel the misfires occasionally during a cold startup or a prolonged idle even with the motor at operating temps...

once all this shit is installed, the only thing left for me to do is have the car paint corrected and respayed...i'm still toying with the idea of doing the rod and valve install myself, or just installing the rods and having a shop somewhere here in austin, tx do the head, or just say fuk it and have a shop do it all...

i'm pretty much 99% sure that i'm going to do the rods on my own though and plan on taking tons of pictures as my parts begin to trickle in and during the install...i've read through the bentley and haynes manual and feel i can do the rods on my own, but not sure how much more difficult a valve job is since i bought the valves on impulse today and haven't research how it is done at all...i actually bought the video jazzpur made for 1.8t drop in rod installs and after watching it feel totally comfortable doing this on my own...

going to use this thread to ask questions and get advice as i make progress...so please critique my build plans, parts selection and so forth because this is really uncharted territory for me...currently have ~165k on the stock motor and would like to last another 200k+ since this is my daily...

would you guys touch the cam seals, rear main seal or crankshaft seal? mine aren't leaking and have ~165k on them...
