Awe Track Exhaust Stock vs Non Res Downpipes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,

Currently have the S5 4.2 V8 6MT with the AWE Track system. Debating whether or not to go non res downpipes as well. I feel like balance of exhaust loudness to drone is perfect now with the stock dps. Is the drone significantly more with the awe dps? Do you think it is worth it? This car is my daily driver so while I can tolerate some amount of drone I would rather not be droning all over the highway. Can you please share your experiences? Thanks

Keep the OEM downpipes. It’ll drone with the non res downpipes. I lived with it for a bit but in the end, very happy I went with resonated downpipes. It was more the level of cold start noise that did me in personally. I resorted to starting the car first, letting the idle settle then opening the garage door.

Thanks for the response. So you're saying the drone is too much for daily driving? Even with a manual trans.?

Everyone's standards are different. There's what I consider real drone down low in the rev range, between 2-3K, the type that reverberates throughout the cabin and I find really annoying. I get it around 65mph on the highway, better by 70 and by 80 it's pretty much engine noise but not what I would call bad drone. On the highway it's more just the constant exhaust noise just below your seat (so it seems). You can turn the radio up and it'll remove some of the noise issues but your passengers will notice. Once I installed the touring downpipes, it's like all the noise below the seat just vanished and you heard the (exceptional) exhaust note out the back only, as it should be. The touring downpipes should theoretically make a few more hp than the OEM downpipes.

But seriously, cold starts were just stupid loud. It actually caused my neighbor's kid to cry one morning. I work in a professional field and I was very aware of who was in the parking lot when I fired things up at the end of the day.

track with non res sounds intoxicating. its very loud for a daily. depends what u want. personally that's the only route ill go, and would not mind the drone at all. iv driven it for a few days with an auto trans and it does drone but nothing I minded cause I constantly had a grin on my face. since u have manual u can control the level and play around with the revs.

Can you still take it on road trips without the drone being irritating? I guess that’s my biggest fear right now. The balance of drone to loudness right now with the track and stock downpipes is perfect right now. I wouldn’t mind a little more volume I just don’t want a lot more annoying drone .

its really personal preference. right now i have a straight pipped tts with a downpipe and it is LOUD, almost as loud as my straight piped r8 when i hammer it through the revs. i dont mind it, and it does drone.

if u dont mind drone, get it. if u dont like drone, dont. since u say its already perfect right now, why not keep it as is?

Was just curious as some people on the forums were saying drone is not an issue even with non res downpipes with the 6mt. Was just trying to see if there was any truth behind that claim

That statement is false imo. Theres always drone. With 6mt u can just downshift or hit higher revs to get out of it so its less annoying

Do you know if the milltek non resonated downpipes would be compatible with the awe track system?

I have 6mt Track with res DP....

I can say that IMO it is way too quite. I admit there is some drone, but it is not unbearable at all.

I would love to switch to non res DP in the future, even at the expense of more drone.

I went ahead and ordered the milltek downpipes. Heard from other threads that people have mated the two without any problems and that the downpipes are virtually the same.

wish I saw this earlier. Would have sold you mine. I have a video clip of what it sounds like on my ig. It is not too loud at all. But I do have some drone though.

I have a V6 with auto trans, I have the AWE track and stock down pipes. The drone isn't too bad, but I was wondering how much would the resonated down pipes quiet the exhaust??
