Question Help/Ideas for Intermittent Front Turn Signals Issue 2005.5 S4 Sedan B6/B7

    Hey Guys,

I just had a random issue immediately start right at leaving from the Audi dealership from getting the Passenger Side Airbag Recall done 2 days ago. Before getting the recall done this issue did not exist or had ever occurred prior. At the time I thought it was just a mishap from battery being disconnected possibly or a bad bulb.

Issue: Front Turn Signal Bulbs Both are acting as if they are out or going out intermittently and car tells me they are out. But they turn back on intermittently and sometimes (R) or (L) side goes off or on. When they work car message disappears. All at random timing. Sometimes car starts with them on and other time they are off and it complains still. Never an issue prior to 2 days ago.

All Rear and Side Marker turn bulbs work just fine and hazard button works just fine when the front bulbs are choosing to work. When turning on blinker it flashes and blinks fine when they are working and it flashes quickly when the front bulbs are not working. Either way all other side and rear bulbs always flash and work properly.

My headlight housing are practically brand new installed in late 2015/early 2016. Bulbs still look fine. Looked over fuses but can't be a fuse if they all work fine even if at random. I can not determine which or where what relay may be related or if a bad relay could cause only the front turn bulbs to act up.

New bulbs on order before I realized they were fine and still turning off & on. Today they work but if I go driving they may turn back off at some point.

So, question what is the possibility that something was unplugged or loosened from the air bag recall being done? ....or mere coincidence. Secondly, what the heck should I be looking at first or trying. Ideas?????

Why not just take it back to the dealer and tell them to fix their f... up? :-)

Yeah, think I've read enough posts on blinker, indicator, hazard issues to make my eyes pop out by now. But almost all posts are for older Audi cars late 90's to 2003 mostly. As far as the dealer passenger airbag inflator recall being done....I really just did not see how that could be related but I did stop by and talk to my usual guys there to ask if they do anything with relays, loosening something etc just to rule it out. The recall is pretty straightforward and they don't touch any of the other systems. They even kept a trickle charge on the car while work was being done so I did not have to reset my radio presets etc either. I actually brought the car to them without my glove box even installed so they could just drop the airbag, install replacement part and let me get on my way. So just typical Audi coincidence to fix one thing and end up with another issue afterward.

Anyways back on point. I do not have any issues with it wanting to not blink or blink opposite sides like I've read on other blinker stalk related posts. Right side and left side blink appropriately when using stalk around car....it just does not see or turn on the front headlight turn bulbs and more so than not complains about the front right passenger side bulb being out looking at the pattern. Most times the error disappears while driving and front bulbs resume blinking like normal. My car uses single filament bulbs with filaments intact on both sides.

What I want to know is if in the B6 or B7 chassis the Hazard Switch on the dash incorporates the relays for the blinkers similar to the B5 posts I found all over the internet that address similar issues like mine? Would hate to buy the Hazard Switch and it not be related. Dealer guy recommended that first too since he recalled replacing them all the time for earlier A4 and TT cars.

Your turn signals are controlled via the J519 electrical system control module. Hazard relay does not come in to play like the older cars. If you're simply getting a fault for one side, swap the bulbs and see if it follows. It is fairly common for the J519 module to fail.

That sounds more possible. It more likely than not complains about the front (R) turn signal but also flips to (L) on occasion which the bulb out error self disappears many times halfway through driving around and resumes normal blinking if I signal right or left to turn or lane change. Also my A/C stopped working after our last major cold spell about 3 months ago. My tech said the car codes indicated bad thrust sensor. I already have the A/C parts and have not gotten around to installing just yet but I also read elsewhere that this J519 module could cause A/C to not work as well if it becomes faulty and give misreadings related to thrust sensor.

Just received another set of bulbs today and of course it never hurts to try another bulb even if the existing looks fine. If I decide to replace the J519 looks like I'll need to remove it from under drivers side steering wheel knee panel, I have a contact with VCDS to extract the existing codes/coding before replacing.

Best would be scan the car with VCDS/similar first to see if there’s anything that could help.
In any case if the rear turn signal bulbs always work it’s 99% not the relay or the stalk. It’s most likely a bad connection somewhere along the wiring so the wiring diagram (Erwin.audiusa.com I think) and a trusted voltmeter is your best friend my man.
