    GT28RS or GT2871 eliminator

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know that there has being many threads about this topic. I have read a ton of things about these 2 turbo and I’m still a little indecisive on which one to choose. I’m more pull to the gt2871. Ok so here is my situation. I have 05 b6 with the APR ko4 tune, which isn’t bad but it’s like a teaser leave u wanting more. I have been running this for about 3 years. Now my turbo is starting to make noise. Check it and I have some shaft play. 😁 So now I have a reason to get a new turbo. I narrowed do the the gt28rs & the gt2871 eliminator, because they are direct bolt on. Plus I’m trying to minimize cost. Now this is my current set up ATP exhaust manifold, IE intake manifold, ER b7 DSMIC, stock internals, test pipe, relocation bmw m3 high flow cat with modified APR exhaust system. Now I would like to hear from people that either had or currently running either of these turbos. Please answer these questions:
    Which turbo are u running/did u run?
    Whp?
    Tune running and set up?
    Rpm spool and full boost?
    Would u recommend?
Pros & cons that u experience?

I ran a 2871r elim on a ported manifold and a 3” downpipe. Full boost was around 3,800 IIRC which is about where you’ll be at sea level. That turbo was a lot of fun. Good full powerband where down low in the RPMS you can just cruise around and save gas, then when you want power just downshift and off you go!

I ran k04, gtrs, gt2871r, and now gtx2867r. Look at my build page.

My vote is the gtx2867r on a 1.8. Best power band.

Thanks for the info that’s what I’m looking for power but can still get good highway mileage.

The GTRS will make more power than the 71r eliminator turbo as it is more efficient.

that only depends on tune and motor. it is true most tunes for a 1.8 wont max out a gt2871r but that doesnt mean it doesnt make more power than the gtrs

yep, i'm traveling a ton for work the next two months since i just started a new gig in austin, tx so i won't be able to tear into the motor until the end of june...but that gives me a few months to really study the bentley/haynes manual and make a checklist of torque specs and stuff like that...

i need to pick up a set of feeler gauges, a motor stand, cam gear counter hold, piston ring tool, honer, and more than likely some other tools that i don't even know i need yet..

The GTRS is a great street turbo. No need to open up the block unless you are going with a lot of timing and boost or unless you have other issues with it. However, it is good if you want piece of mind.

I'm still running the GTRS Eliminator on the Audi since 2005 (or 2007?) on the ancient STG 3 REVO software on the stock original block and rods, head and manifold. Mods are in the sig. The car can still get around 26/27 miles to a gallon pure HWY cruising. Boost and torque come on strong at around 3100/3200 rpm and pulls to redline.

And I still enjoy driving this 15 year old car more than our newer Audis

so i'm an idiot, i ordered the GTRS eliminator and didn't realize the turbo needs a different housing to mate with the APR manifold i just bought...does anyone know which type of housing i need to swap out to use the APR manifold and without the special APR downturn?

T25, but the compressor housing is different between a GTRS and GT28RS (the full-frame/T25 version) so you might be better off just reselling and getting the correct part

yea, i just cancelled my order for the GTRS...

    on ATP's site, right now...https://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...egory_Code=GRT

is this the full frame version of the GTRS? which A/R should i pick as well? i googled a bit a think i found that the turbo APR uses is .64 A/R (i have no idea what AR means tho)

also, what are these options for?

is this the adapter i would use to mate with my test pipe? it looks like some welding would need to be done as well?

i just want the same turbo APR uses with the APR manifold and don't want to fuk my order up a second time...TIA!!!

yes, you want the GR28RS, .64 AR, T25 internal WG, standard GT28RS compressor housing, and 14psi/1 bar actuator pressure. The polished housing option is purely cosmetic, up to you if worth $75 extra.

That 5-bolt adapter will work, but you'll need to modify your test pipe to have a V-band flage / be the appropriate length (or obtain an APR test pipe/HFC)

I can’t speak to the full frame version but I will say that it wasn’t a perfect fit on my GTRS. I’m sure it would take a little massaging but could probably work on your setup also. I had to cut some material off the inlet end so I would fit between the turbo and fan shroud and then I had to get a short section of silicon and steel tubing to extend the air box end to the MAF. I also heard a larger MAF housing so I had to adapt that tit the upper air box cover.

nice, when my turbo and apr manifold show up, i'm going to send the t25 housing and manifold to jet hot to get ceramic coated...

can i reuse the clamps and bolts that hold the t25 housing on since the turbo is brand new, or are those bolts one time use stretch bolts?

can't wait to start my build thread when all my shit shows up.

so, in addition to rods, i'm about to order a set of IE valve springs and retainers, and super tech single groove intake valves and inconel exhaust valves...cause why the fuk not since the motor is going to be apart and it would give me head room if i decide to go larger than gt28rs in the future...

i don't see much pop up when i search "valves" sorted by title on audizine, or b6 a4 stock valves on teh google...

can you guys give me your opinion of this combination before i pull the trigger??? i'm going to have a machine shop do the head work and i'm going to do the rods myself...
