    Hi

I have a 1996 A4 1.8 20v ADR with low compression and low power engine problems, want to rebuild engine, saw Standard BRAND NEW Glyco 026198491 bearing shells for 38 USD on ebay and 06B198151B piston ring set standard 81mm Mahle priced 29 each set, so here is the question, can I buy standard to rebuild? for people here that have repaired these engines, have you had to use larger rings? if yes where did you buy them or whats the part #, checked 7zap and I can only find part #'s for standard sizes. I need to order these parts from the states, here I wont be able to get them (dont wnat to be 2 weeks without my car+ 1 week repairing it). I'm pretty sure compression problem comes from rings, I'll be performing a leak test this week just to be sure, already did a compression test and it was around 140 psi each cylinder. (low).
    Thanks

You'd really have to take the engine apart and measure the cylinders to see if a standard set of rings will still be in spec or not.

Also, you cannot simply run larger rings. You must have larger pistons too.

As far as I see it, you have two options:

    1. Get new standard rings, bottle hone the cylinders, and hope for the best

    or

    2. Measure everything and go from there. This will be a more lengthy process.

I'm not sure where you located, but I ordered Goetze rings from Germany. Much cheaper than from the US. I got them from cs-parts.de
