    Clutch gone bad?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Suddenly today as I was driving the gears become very difficult to push in. If I switch off the car, the gears go in, with only some small extra "push" required for 1st and 2nd. The rest are fine. I started feeling slipping the clutch in 1st and the typical clutch burning smell. Eventually I managed somehow to get the car home but now with the engine running, none of the gears want to go in anymore.

Am I correct to assume that the clutch is gone and I need new clutch kit? Or could it be a more complicated problem with the gearbox (hope not)?

And lastly because I’m based in South Africa, shipping of Bentley DVD will take a long time. Could someone be kind and able to scan the relevant pages and email them to me?

one way to tell if the clutch is slipping is put it into a high gear at low speed and floor the gas and if the the engine revs, its slipping. Otherwise it could be the slave cylinder, the shifter, and or the tranny.
    Need another!

Could be just slave cylinder. The clutches on these cars are very robust.

I can not do that because as soon as I start the engine, I can not engage any gears anymore.

How would I troubleshoot if it’s the slave cylinder for sure? On by A4 B5, when the slave cylinder went, the clutch pedal stayed down. But I didn’t have a problem engaging gears with the engine running. Could it be different problem but related to the slave cylinder again?
