    Hi guys,
i am new to this forum, planning on buying a B8 from a seller with about 60 k miles ,as per Audi stage 1 and stage 2 will be covered as part of 80 k warranty for 2011 model oil consumption issue.
while the engine is taken down can i get the dealer to replace timing chain/tensioner replaced and would that be an expensive ask .
Stage 1 and 2 are free and covered by Audi.
    Thanks
    R

I had stage 2 done and they told me the chain and tensioner needed to be replaced. If you didn’t already know but there is a current class action lawsuit in progress about the tensioner. Google Audi chain tensioner lawsuit and you can get more info on that. Anyway, even with the lawsuit in the courts my dealer at the time and the regional Audi of America rep told me that the tensioner would not be covered and cost me $1,700 after some serious negations. Pm me your number if you want to talk more about this.

If you were approved for stage 2 oil fix, most dealer will just ask you for parts cost only (approx. $600)

They charged you $1700 during stage 2 while the motor was already apart? If that's true they bent you over a barrel. Hell I was quoted $1300 to do the tensioner/chains alone without any other work being done!

I’m not messing around, their original quote had 4 hours of labor in it to do the chain, and I was like, the thing is already apart!!! They had me by the balls, because if I did have them put it back together, I’d have to pay another shop to pull it all apart again. Mission Viejo Audi has only one thing in mind and that’s the bottom line. $$$$$$

I have owned VW's for 20+ years and my local dealer VW dealer is way easier to work with on service/repair rates than the Audi dealer next door to them.

Most everything done at dealer service is what they call "Book Rate" and seems that Audi charges book rate for everything they do as if that is only repair being done, doesn't matter if all those parts are already exposed or off engine already.

A few years ago the 2.0T engine in my 08 Passat broke a valve spring, while head was off I asked for the timing chain tensioner and other related parts be replaced because I was at 123K, they said no problem because engine was already torn down 85% of the way so I ended up paying 1 or 2 hours of Labor and required parts to get updated TC Tensioner and few other parts put in during rebuild. I think parts were under $300 from dealer if I remember correctly and added around $400 to the total bill to rebuild head.

Since we only have 1 Audi dealer in the area they get away with stuff like this easier than other manufacturers.

I was in the same boat like 3 years ago for stage 2. I asked them nicely to at least change the tensioner to buy me some time but I would be happy to buy all the chains and guides through the dealer as they mark up about 2x higher than anyone else. They said $500 extra in labor + parts, they said at the time the car only had like 40k on the clock and I shouldn't worry. They also made up some excuse that the front chain covers wouldn't be touched during stage 2 anyway..........wow!

I am happy that I am doing it now since the parts have gone through 2 or 3 updates, at least the chains just did recently like a month ago, the tensioner seems to be solid the last 3 or 4 years.

If the class action goes through with the tensioner issue, you may actually be able to get your money back?

WIth that said if you want to save some serious coin make them do the rear main seal even as a precaution while its all out, my dealer actually did during stage 2, they seem to fail even with low miles.
