    300zx2g35's Long Roof S4 Conversion

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well, after having the car together for a few weeks now and working out most of the issues, figured it was time to start a thread documenting the journey.

    A little background:

I'll start off by saying I've always loved the wagon body style, ever since my first ride in a Volvo wagon, sitting in the rear-facing seats.

In terms of cars, it took me a bit to get here as I love fast cars. I've had a 240z (which I still have), a couple 300zx TTs, and a G35 coupe (see a trend here) before finally getting into sedans and AWD with a Subaru Legacy Spec B. I loved it because it made a perfect year-round daily along with providing space to carry people/stuff. Mind you, I was still wanting to get into a wagon at some point. If I had kept the car, I would have done the same thing and swapped it all into a wagon body. But, I got fed up with how unreliable the Subaru motor was.

I started looking and, in terms of AWD systems, Audi was the logical choice as they had it down whereas other manufacturers were just getting into AWD. Of course, I still had to have a fast car and in my price range was the S4. Reliability and problems came into play and, after a ton of research, I settled on a B8.5 S4. People were modding them, taking them to track days, and still dailying them with upwards of 30-40k on tuned cars with practically zero issues. Initially I wanted a manual, but with my commute, the DSG sounded better and better. I found one at a local BMW dealer, test drove it, and I was instantly in love. Still just as fun even though it wasn't a manual. Car had been owned by a middle-age Audi sales woman so it was fully optioned and very well taken care of.

A few pics of the S4:

Of course with all the research, I stumbled across GMGs S4 conversion, so I knew I had to do it at some point. So I kept it in the back of my mind, looking for good A4 wagons, and going back and forth between using an A4 or an Allroad.

I enjoyed the S4, modded and issue free, for almost 3 years before finding a good condition A4 back in February of this year.

I drove it around for almost a month before deciding to move forward with the conversion.

Started off tearing down the Avant. Since I wanted a full B8.5 Avant with all the features working (sport diff, adaptive headlights, etc), I knew there would be differences in the body harness. I also didn't want to run into issues with incompatible modules, component protection, etc. Unlike just swapping in the motor/trans and making a B8 Avant, I had to tear the entire car down to a shell.

I started by stripping the interior:

After getting the interior stripped, it was time to get out the motor and rear end:

Until finally, it was a bare shell:

    Next up was the S4:

So after stripping both cars, I realized there were a few more differences, other than B8 to B8.5, than I had initially anticipated being that the S4 was a Prestige and the Avant was a Premium Plus.

One difference being that, I had to swap the door handles so that I could retain Keyless:

After getting that sorted, I put the door harnesses and door panels on:

After doing all this, I started comparing the wiring harnesses and realized that there were a lot of differences from B8 to B8.5 in terms of connectors and modules. It was then I thought, well the Allroad is technically a B8.5 version of the wagon, so the harness should have the updated connectors and module differences. Luckily, I found a scrap yard that not only had an Allroad body harness, but it was from a 2014 as well!

After getting it in, it was time to compare Sedan to Allroad:

Eureka!! Body harness differences were now limited to S4 and A4 (Allroad) differences. Unfortunately I don't have any pics but I stripped out the wiring for the Sport diff and the Sound Aktor from the S4 harness, and wired them into the same places in the Allroad harness. Now let's just pray it worked once I got the car back together.

So now it was time to really start putting it all back together. I apologize because now the pictures get a bit spotty as I was cranking getting the car back together.

Had to swap the gas tank and evap system as the A4 had 3 lines going to the engine bay whereas the S4 only had 2 plus the evap plug was different and I had already upgraded the fuel pump in the S4:

Power and ground for the electric steering:

    Running the wiring:

For anyone wondering, there are only 2 plugs which connect the motor/trans harness to the body harness:

S4 carpet in (no differences except the metal dead pedal:

S4 dash in (no differences except I didn't want to chance breaking the carbon piece):

    Seats in:

Dyed the sunshade (thanks for the tip on the synthetic dye Avantagg):

    Painted any plastic interior pieces:

And wrapped the headliner and pillars in suede:

I also added the liftgate motors for the power liftgate. I had initially used the Kufatec kit before I tore down the Avant but the Allroad body harness already had the plugs:

One thing I didn't like, was how dark the trunk area was, even when I had seen them with LEDs swapped in. So I tapped off one of the side trunk lights, added a couple OEM style LED lights to the rear roof panel:

I have since swapped out the side lights for LEDs as well and it is the perfect amount of light.

First startup after getting it all back together. Click for video:

2018-04-01 10.28.44 by Chuck Sampson, on Flickr

And finally, back on the road for the first drive! Took it to the carwash to get off some of the dirt that had accumulated from it sitting:

After driving it a few days, installed the front lip, ECS fog surrounds, and the audi zubehör side skirts:

A few issues I ran into after getting it back together: I had a couple faults for the dynamic steering and the sport differential. The dynamic steering fault was resolved with a new clockspring. I must have accidentally damaged mine when taking the car apart. The sport differential fault was because i was getting an "Implausible signal" from the brake light switch. I had initially used the A4 brake light switch. Didn't see any reason to swap it as the part numbers were the same. Swapped in the brake light switch from the S4 and voila! The fault was gone. No clue what the reasoning for it was. The final fault I have, which isn't a major enough one to throw any dash lights, is the humidity sensor for the HVAC system. From my research, it appears to be built into the rain sensor on the facelift models and a completely separate sensor on the prefacelift. I am currently waiting for the part to come in and then I will swap it.

Other than that, my final thing is to get an alignment, get the rear bumper painted, and this portion of the project is complete.

    Still more to come though!

Took about 3 weeks. Maybe add another week waiting for the new clockspring but I was driving it in the meantime.

It was more tedious, especially the wiring portion. Yes, did it all myself in my garage with a little help from friends for the heavy lifting portions.

Wow nice work. Makes my 6mt swap look easy. Had to replace the brake light switch too but mostly because it’s not meant to be removed and reused.

I’m hoping to find a b8 manual s4 at some point and just swap engine, ecu and cluster into my avant plus whatever modules I can easily do.

I miss my Spec B but I had way too many motor issues. I wish I could attribute it to me just being rough on vehicles, at least that would make sense. But having been through 3 motors, 2 of which were built, it was time to throw in the towel.

That's 8-3 most days, with a few shorter days, and some off days. If I had been able to go at it 8-5 or longer every day and already had parts I needed, I probably could have had it done in a little over a week or less.

    Just a little update:

Car passed emissions no problem the other day. I tried using one of the new self-serve kiosks Maryland has but no go, so I had to go through one of the drive through ones. No issues except the guy came back out to recheck the VIN on the windshield.

Also I installed my subwoofer and carbon RS4 replica spoiler.

Trim panel off to get the box in the corner:

Amp and LC2i mounted in the other corner:

Finished. Well almost. Still need to make a beauty panel to cover everything. My plan is to have it so you only see the sub.

Carbon RS4 replica spoiler installed. Yes I know, she needs a bath lol.

    More to come!

Beautiful build OP. And the fitment of the carbon spoiler looks spot on. Where did you source that?

So awesome. After watching the GMG car being built for months it seems, pretty cool to see you pull it off in a matter of weeks. Really nice work.

I will probably be there. Just need to check my schedule when it gets closer. I was there last year in the sedan.

Fit and finish on the spoiler was really good except it was a bit bowed. Needed to use something stronger (Betalink Adhesive) than double-sided tape to get it to stay down properly because of it being bowed. Got it from here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Carb...311.0.0.p802Xa

Beautiful LGT you have there. I still have mine, just trying to figure out what to do with it. Modded to the gills, JDM Spec B A-C front end (USDM headlights, JDM fogs) with the Rev D-F honeycomb grille paired with it. I cracked cyl 4 ring land and rebuilt it. After like 40k it sounded weird so I took it in to a shop and they claimed there's an issue with one of the cylinders again and were pushing me to rebuild again. Barely burns 1qt over 3k mi so I am wary, but the creature comforts started to break down on her so I was over dumping cash into it. Has like 168xxx on the clock, about 50k on the new block, but the majority of the car is no longer stock.

I intend to bring it to a different shop at some point for another assessment and go from there. Probably will sell it. I've been driving it while my allroad was in the shop (body work after minor paint trade) and I remember why I loved that car. The power delivery I ended up with is so smooth and it rides on rails. It's like a go-kart compared to the allroad. But I am loving having a newer car where everything is comfortable and appreciate the wagon life.
