Repair item costs equivalent to other Audi models?

I'm always hearing about how high repair costs are on Audis. Engines, transmissions, modules, etc. costing thousands more dollars to replace over more common brands.

I bought the S3 with the hope that since it shares platforms and drivetrains with the VW Golf, it would translate to cheaper components in the long run when the warranty is up.

What I'm getting at is if my 6 spd DSG fails at 90k miles, is it still going to cost $10k+ like the trans on an Audi exclusive (S4, A6, etc) model? Are Golf R costs this high?

Debating about whether or not to buy an extended warranty, really.

the thing is vw's are not cheap either. you can probably save a little by using a vw certified shop instead of an audi shop. some parts vw uses are the same part# as the audi part but they price them different.

on my 2004 audi a4, i needed a dipstick funnel. it was plastic and after 8 years it cracked. i called audi, $30. I called vw (same part # as the passat), $16. I went to vw parts, which was right across the street from audi. i ordered the part and watched the parts guy walk across the street to audi to retrieve the dipstick funnel.

as for the dsg transmission, i would imagine the R's price is the same.

Compared to the higher up cars (A4, A5, A6, etc) our 8V cars will generally be cheaper as their subsidized with VW cars, especially with the advent of the MQB platform. General maintenance should be similar to a VW, and any indy shop that can service a Golf R or hell even a GTI can service your S3.
