Vagcom Coding.....Do you guys use a battery charger as suggested??

Just curious if you guys do and if so, what to use?

The one in their video looks like its pretty robust. Wondering if there is one that are better than others, rather not cause any havoc with the electronics

I've used VCDS quite a bit and never used a battery charger. It seems a bit overkill to me unless you're going to be doing a lot of coding at once (i.e. spending a lot of time sitting there with the car in the 'On' position but not running), or if you know your battery is failing already.

Only time I ever used one with Vag-Com is when doing rear brakes for the first time, as I took it slow. Next time, might not even bother since it should go much quicker.

That's exactly what I am doing.....

I'd prefer to be wise, I have no crystal ball as to when the battery would die..

Probably good idea with this wacky winter and spring. I just used a Battery Tender on mine.

Haven’t done this procedure, but they way they are so ardently pounding it home to use one I’d err on the side of caution and do it.

Costly and inconvenient mistake could happen if you don’t, so why roll the dice?

Well if you already have vagcom you can just check your voltage beforehand and get an idea of what state your battery is currently in and make a sound decision from there

I don't bother... I don't even bother while flashing the car.

I just turn everything off (headlights, radio, fans) and all is fine.

If anything is taking longer than an hour you are doing it wrong.

Note: When doing rear brakes you can turn the car off after opening the EPB.

I have a radar detector in my car that shows volts and I've never had it go below 12.0 while flashing or using vagcom and I flash a new tune regularly. Don't use the windows or seat heaters thou

I've been messing with my car in the "on" position for maybe 3 hours and didn't have any issues. Audi is just covering their ass with that statement. But if you think the sky might fall, any basic battery tender/jumper would be fine. This really isn't a big deal.

    Just a consideration...
hooked up the battery charger and didn’t need too > no harm done and 2 mins investment

Don’t hook up battery charger and car dies > F’s something up...hundreds/thousands at a dealership
**Hours of research to learn the process, invest the 2 minutes. Not bashing or anything just sharing a thought. This will guarantee you will never be the guy/girl that wished they did...no one wrights a suggestion because they had extra ink and paper lol

I hook up a charger when doing the rear brakes. I haven’t used a charger for coding or flashing.

Like Boz says, for a 2 minute effort it seems the prudent thing to do.

I concur with connecting a battery charger when working with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) calipers on the rear. Mentioned in the Ross-Tech parking brake repair steps here, and explicitly referenced in the accompanying video:

I agree, prudent to use a charger. Some of these chargers like to put out pulses of higher voltages, not sure that’s ideal while coding though?

I think if your battery is unable to last 2 hours in the on position, even with the radio on, it's just a dead battery. I can't imagine going to a drive in and the car can't last an entire movie.

i did rear brakes on my A5 for the first time this past weekend.
followed the referenced utube video by by LYKUNO to the 't'....

added time to the process... 20 minutes (being V cautious since i was swapping out calipers, too)

result.... no issues, none at all....

    why risk?

If the battery dies while you’re recoding something, you’re going to have a very bad, and very very expensive day. Hook up a tender and guarantee success Or just roll the dice and hope you don’t brick your car.

I agree, a $40 battery charger is cheap insurance.

Where can you get a charger for 40 dollars? I bought a battery tended for that price but it's not the same thing. I asked in a different post if hooking up jumper cables will work, or if that would somehow over amp the ecu and no one gave me a answer. So here is the question. If I hook up jumper cables to a good car (wife's 2017 Q5) will it help? And second should I have her car running?

I use the $60 version of this one that charges at 25 amps though
