    APR vs. IE tuning

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there anyone has has experience, with these tunes and have prefrences on which one to have. Currently have a b8.4 A4 and leaning towards APR but have some consideration for IE. They also released a downpipe some time ago so not sure if they plan on continuing to make/develop parts for this platform.

The owner of Integrated Engineering drives a B8 A4 and just put a K04 turbo on it. He is custom tuning my K04 B8.5 right now. This leads me to believe that they will continue to support this platform.

Mostly every stage tunes are going to be similar in power. I went with APR because their tunes are more conservative. Stage 1 I honestly didn't feel a huge increase over stock, (I had only an intake at the time) stage 2 is where I felt the biggest difference.

Has anyone read more about some people adding piggyback tunes to their APR tunes etc. to achieve more boost or power?

Afaik the only guys who are doing it are the ones with the gen 3 engine and using a JB4 stacked on top of a stage 2 tune. Mainly seen on the Golfs and S3’s.

I have a JB4 on my MK7 GTI. I wish it supported the Gen 2 motor as well....

Maybe someone in this thread can explain why the dyno graph shows different HP gains than the claims on IE website. It says a gain of 68BHP over stock but right above that it shows a dyno graph with only 45BHP gained. The torque is also off as well. Am I reading it wrong?

I called IE and they told me that they had no E85 support for My B8.5 and APR did... so I went with APR Stage 2 91 tune with HFC and I run only E85 and its terrific and pluls E85 around me is around 2$ where 91 is around 3.50$/gal

I run E85 all the time as well on my B8.5 A4, the power difference is phenomenal... I have always had APR and have been happy, but don't know anything about IE tuning.

I bought the IE tune for my B8.5. This is my first tune so I won't have any comparisons. It should be in the mail today so I can update you after I driving on it for a few days.

When i was shopping around for stage 1 tunes last month, I really wanted to go with IE because of the ability to switch tunes at home. Unfortunately, their B8.5 tune doesn't support e85 (confirmed through emails with IE) so i went with APR and have no regrets. I think you should go with APR if you have a flex fuel car and e85 is readily available to you.

Installing is a piece of p**s, plug in battery charger, plug in cable - install and away you go.

I did IE - stock to stage 2 straight away, running 3.0tdi intercooler, and HFC. Now looking to replace all chargecooler pipes and a GFB DV+ (just because boost pressure is quite a lot higher now).

Other than that my car is stock, and the difference is fantastic, just wakes the car up to be what it should've been from the factory.

    EDIT: driving a 2010 2.0tfsi Avant

Super easy, the system walks you through it in very plain English. Just follow the screen prompts and you'll be done in 15 minutes.

One cool thing from IE, my ECU is a european version, they took three hours to change their software to allow me to tune my car. Pretty good customer service if you ask me.

Fwiw I am talking to IE on Facebook and they are working on e85 tunes but no idea when they will be available. I have not confirmed but I suspect they will provide the proper e85 file if you already own a tune when they become available

I have installed it and its pretty good. Just got the 93 Octane in yesterday and put it on. Today the 93 was running a little rough on one of my shifts but I think it needs some time to settle in.

Anyways the tune is good. I was expecting a lot more low end torque but its not really there. From a stop the car still has that "dead zone" feeling but it picks up faster and a lot smoother. The crazy part is that you can really feel the HP towards the top end of the RPMs and the car feels like it never stops pulling.

TLDR: More responsive, Smoother Shifts, Higher RPM power

I ordered stage 1 because I am not sure if I am ready to go stage 2 and deal with the possible emissions nightmare that can pop up.

When I first received the tune I only had stock and 91 octane stage 1 tune. All I did was send an email and they created at 93 octane tune for me and put it on the server for my cable. I was able to flash that yesterday and it seems that I can freely switch between the stock, 91, and 93 tunes as I feel.

Currently I am not sure if I get to keep the stage 1 tunes if I upgrade but I have a feeling I will get to keep them. Their system works on credits. So essentially each dollar is a credit and you can spend it as you wish. So since I have 499 credits (enough to buy stage 1) then I can freely flash any tune that is worth 499 credits. I am assuming for stage 2 that you get the extra credits and will be able to use those credits on stage 2 and switch back to stage 1 if you wanted.

Flex fuel on the b8.5 is great.

They should have done it on more cars.

I experimented with ethanol on my 93 octane tune. There is a point of diminishing returns. After logging data using E85, I found that I didn’t get more timing advance beyond an E40 blend.

Oh ok, I see you have an IE tune.

The APR tune definitely adjusts for E85 and can feel the difference.

Sadly I have not. The IE is supposed to be able to log but it's currently not supported on the B8.5 A4 platform.

I have a VAG-COM but I of course left it at the parents when I changed into my summer tires. I need to make a trip to go pick it up so I can run some logs.

APR has no E85 specific file.

Their specific octane files adapts to E85.

The apr tune adjusts for e85 using the factory sensie so you wouldn't need an e85 file. If you have a different tuner youd want an e85 specific file.
