Assistance needed please - 2005 B6 S4 - Car Sputtering and shaking on startup

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I recently got my engine back together from doing timing chains/guides on my 2005 B6 S4. Now that I have everything back together and back in the car, I tried starting the car today. I did crank the engine first with out the fuel fuse in. So after cranking first a few times, I put the fuel fuse in and the car fired up and seemed to run good. as it was running the coolant alert came up, so I shut the car down, and filled up the coolant again. I then went to start the car again, and it would catch but die right away. After a few tries the car will start and run, but will sputter and shake, then eventually die again.

Everything seems fine with the fluids so far. But I am wondering if maybe I didn't do something right with the clutch.

If I didn't do the clutch correctly, could it cause this type of issue? has anyone run into this before?

Thanks in advance for your help!

how long did it run for ?

first thing I'm thinking about is air in the fuel system.

Is your fuel rail returnless or with a return line ?

the sputtering/shaking is simply due to a couple cylinders not firing.

It ran for maybe 5 minutes the first time and sounded really good.

The fuel rail is stock as far as I know. I did have it off due to the intake coming off for the timing job though.

if it ran good for 5 mins, then it should have cleared any air in the fuel rail.

at this point I don't know why it would sputter/miss and die, Do you have any way of checking for codes ?

Without having any scanner info to go off of it makes it hard. Definitely check your cam/crank sensor wiring and make 100% sure they are plugged in correctly. Other than that, check all vacuum lines to make sure they are all connected.

Indeed best is to scan the code with VCDS/ODIS/similar and post it here.

My cable came and showed no issue other than the ABS module being out. I decided to get it back onto the stands, and took the starter out of it. The starter and battery both tested good. This was this past Sunday.

After work today I put the front into service position and removed the plugs and coils. Since my pulleys and belt are new, I removed the main pulley, and put two bolts back in so I could turn the motor. When I did this, I had coolant come out of the passenger side #3 plug hole, the second time around it came out of the passenger side #2.

At this point i don't think I really have any other option but to pull the motor again, and see if I can figure out where the coolant is coming from, and check the timing on it.

I could also put the starter back in and crank it without any plugs in it, and see if I can get the coolant out.

    Any thoughts?

Wow coolant coming out from the spark plugs holes is never good my man, that’s either head gasket, cracked head/block.
Actually it may be a good idea to do a leak down test before you do anything further as this can pinpoint the problem better, even though the most likely outcome is that you’ll see the air leaking out from the coolant tank.

Coolant in wrong places is never good. I'd be careful cranking it with spark plugs In as water doesn't compress. I think cranking with plugs out would be a good start, or as mentioned, a leakdown test to see if you can pinpoint the issue.

Everything was good as far as I know when I took it apart, was just the broken guides. I did not take off the heads when I had it apart.

Yeah the plugs are currently out. I'm wondering if something didn't seal up properly when I put everything back together.

did you maybe mix up the coolant and PCV lines on/near the throttle body?

I'd always wondered if it was possible to get those lines mixed up.

Somebody posted on here recently that he had done that and that. If I remember correctly when he took it to the shop he had a couple bent rods from hydrolocking the motor. Water doesn't compress like air LOL
