    Scratch repair on Sepang Blue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Found a 2" scratches on the hood of my 2018 Sepang Blue S6

Brought the car to one of the larger local body shops for an estimate.
They told me that they CAN'T MATCH Sepang Blue color!
Therefore, they suggested repainting the whole hood to the closest color they can manage, and then blend this color into the fenders.
The total is about $1,300. And, of course, the hood and fender will be not Sepang Blue anymore. Additionally, any professional looking at this car would tell that hood and fenders were repainted - and who knows what the extend of the damage was before the repair... It will look like the car was involved in an accident!

My biggest concern is potential development and spread of corrosion from this place.
I would prefer to fill the scratch with primer and the closest blue color, and level it.
It would be visible at close inspection, but I think it is better than what this body shop offered.
Of course, I will take it to other shops.

How would you deal with a small damage like this?
    Thanks!

Where on the hood is it? If it's on one of the sides before the center raise section you're in good luck. You can just mask off that side section to the raised line creating an edge. After color and clear it can then be buffed in melting the edge that was left back into the clear. Because it's right on the body line and the high point it will transition just fine. Can't speak to why they can't match the Sepang, I have Glacier and we did this exact technique with amazing results.

    You need to change bodyshops.

I managed to get 2” scrape on the drivers side rear wheel arch. Body shop repaired and blended my sepang to a perfect match and you would never know it had been repaired.

I think the same technique would work, they’d just shoot the center portion taping from edge to edge of the body line. I’m actually going to my shop today to check progress on my bumper so I’ll ask for you.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard a body shop say. Lol find another shop who can get the paint matched based on the paint code in the trunk.

It is deep - to the metal.
It can't be just buffed out - it must be filled with paint.
However, since the hood is aluminum, maybe corrosion is not as much of a problem as it would be on steel.

Matching the paint should not be a problem, if the shop has a paint mixing process... If they buy "ready" mixed paint, no such luck...

Also, be advised that each of the metallic and pearl based paints have "variances", which means that while the paint code may be X1Y, these will be a variance code (lighter, darker, more coarse, more fine, etc...) that has to be matched to the car itself. A quality repair shop will have the paint cards with each variant, which is matched to the panels of car, IN DAYLIGHT, not inside a shop.

It is an extra step that a shop will take and should take, to make sure that the paint matches what is on a vehicle.
Family comes First!.... Nice cars a close second.
