Seeking advice on getting oil out of the intercoolers...

When I was doing the gaskets for oil filter housing/oil cooler I had to remove the hose from the throttle body to the SMIC and found oil in it. When I reassembled everything I didn't tighten the hose onto the SMIC as tightly as I should have and found a fair amount of oil blown into the engine bay and pooling on the underbody panel so I assume plenty of oil is typically making it into the SMIC (oil "consumption" is an issue with the car). Once I tightened the hose and cleaned it all up there was no more oil so I feel comfortable in assuming that's the source. I've just ordered a revised valve cover and a new PCV so hopefully that will address a lot of the base issue, but it doesn't change me needing to get the already deposited oil out.

Anybody got a system that works? I've got no access to a parts washer, but I do have a compressor.

just undo the intercooler pipes at the bottom of the engine on both drivers and pass side and let it run out. I do it about every 3 or 4 oil changes and I get some out , not a lot. more on the drivers than pass side

    That simple, huh?!? LOL

Do you think any real benefit would be derived from running a little pressurized air through?

You'd make a mess with compressed air.

If you want to get ALL of it out, you could remove it and after draining the oil, throw some acetone in and slosh it back and forth before pouring it out.

No concerns with possible residual acetone fumes?

I like the crash bar being there! The few FMICs that seem to allow both are too salty for what at best will only ever be stage 2 and is mostly just a daily .

JHM small core fits beautifully! No modification needed, except I couldn't keep my fogs (I think S-line bumpers can). But your stage 2 point is valid, I always planned on a stage 3 build, but being JHM stage 2 I never saw much heat soak, and was quite frankly let down when I saw my IAT's didn't drop much, if at all.

As far as getting that oil out, I can't imagine that there is much you could do. Maybe looking for a product similar to seafoam that you can put in pre-intercooler and just letting the engine process it. Other than that I imagine you could take the intercoolers out of the car and running whatever cleaning agent you wish, just make sure to clean them out and let them dry afterwards.

well im on here searching because ive had the same exact thing happen to me this past week. I changed the oil filter/cooler gaskets and didnt tighten the hose all the way at the intercooler end and there is now alot of oil that leaked out. Did the pcv work for you? Did you drain those coolers?

I haven't had a chance to drain it yet.

I'll have an idea on the valve cover and pcv valve swap after a few more miles to check the oil level.

so do i need to be worried that oil is going through that pipe? I looked under the hood saturday night to change mounts and like you, didnt tighten it all the way and alot of oil had leaked. is oil supposed to pass through there?

Ideally no oil would be in there. Realistically it's not uncommon, but I had a allot of it blowing out. My valve cover was defective when I opened it up so it may be worth you looking at further.

Okay its been a few months, how has that new valve cover worked out for you? I still have slight consumption and checked my valve cover. I did the blow test and it passed now im back on here trying to find a solution.

Sadly, it's maybe marginally better. I need to do a boost leak test when I get a chance to see if the turbo is leaking oil.
