    Diagnosing ABS module/ no speedo

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Now that the weather starting to warm up, I'm getting to some of the issues with the car I didnt want to deal with over the winter. for reference its an 03' a4 qm 1.8t. The speedo dosent work most of the time (sometimes will work for a few mins and stop working mid drive), and the ABS or traction control light in the dash is lit.
My bluetooth obd reader dosent give me more info than "vehicle speed sensor" and when I had a garage check it out with their reader, it pointed at the front drivers (left) side speed sensor.
After some research I found that a front left speed sensor code could mean the ABS module is broken, and I was wondering what would be the best ways of diagnosing this?
I would just replace the speed sensor and see if the issue goes away but the Allen bolt that holds the sensor to the hub is pretty corroded and wont come out with the tools I have.

Can you talk to the abs module??Are the lights lit all the time???What your describing is a abs module that on its way out or one that’s already failed.I would recommend a rebuild of the abs module.

If vagcom can talk to the abs module I might be able to get in contact with someone that can scan the ABS codes. The lights on the dash are on basically all the time, other than the few times its off on startup, but returns after a few mins of driving.
Does the module need to be coded by the dealership if I get one from another car? theres a similar yet passat in a local junkyard

No abs can be coded with vagcom.Normally you want a donor module out of a similar car.Due to different engines, transmission, drive train, wheel size and brakes.

I saw a video of the ABS module being removed by just bending the brake lines a bit without draining the brake fluid. Guessing this isnt recommended. The junkyard car was a 2001 passat 1.8t but I'm unsure about any other details. the module in the passat did seem a bit smaller than the one in my car so i doubt it would work.

When I bought a new ABS module on my B5 I was able to code it with my Vagcom. Never had any luck logging in on used modules to recode.

Some one or company repairs the abs module. My buddy just sent his in off his avant same issue. He even replaced the wheel sensors. There’s a diode or something in the abs module that fails

Not a diode but a very fine wire.Very thin probably just as thin as a human hair.Rebuilds normally cost between $40-80.Rebuild is a good way to go as it’s a permanent repair for this known problem with Bosch 5.7 units as well as some others units they manufacture.

Great service. There are instructions on Matt's site that show you how to remove the module. No need to remove the pump with it. Pretty simple job if you have decent mechanical skills.

Yeah I remember seeing a video way back of a diy fix that didnt end up working, but the whole board inside the module was connected to the connector with tiny hair like fibers that seemed to be the problem point. Definitely not going to be able to fix that one by myself.

Yeah they were one of the first services to pop up when I looked around for how to repair the module. I was a bit wary because they're in the US and I'm in Canada, because customs might be funny when shipping my ABS module over, But I'll look further into it.

Another option: https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Audi-A4...lTbTmX&vxp=mtr New for about $390. Also, the fine wires that fail are put down using a process called wire bonding.

I just went through a similar exercise with my 06 Cabrio. It has the Bosch 5.7, and I was getting left rear sensor open or short to ground and sporadic speedometer not working. I went which I thought would be the easiest rout first and replaced the left rear sensor. Well, 3 hours of work was not the easiest way, nor did it fix my issue. I looked at some of the video's on-line and while the best one was for an A6, it worked perfectly for mine. I had the module out of the car in about 10 minutes. Packaged it up, sent to Matt at Cheap-ABS.com and just got it back yesterday. It took about 10 minutes to re-install and I am now enjoying a light free dash! He sends back a high level report, mine said that the module was defective with successful repair.

I had similar issues with my 03. Took the module out and sent it in for rebuild and 2 years later still working great.

Seems like the rebuilds hold up well. I'll take the module out and have a look at the serial number to make sure its one that they can repair.
