This rare Q5 totaled/repaired in NY state - pics

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

    I made an offer on a 2013 Q5 3.0T S-line, will all the options.

The carproof says that its totaled in New York states, but I don't have any info of the crash.
It says multi-impact and it gets a police report.

The seller tell me that it wasn't damaged, it was part of lab testing in USA, then it get registered as totaled and exported to Canada. wtf
Which make no sens for me, since there's a police report, and see the pictures, the hood has been changed, and the front clip has been removed, its debadged.

Fenders looks like OEM since the paint remain on the screws....

My question : what are the criteria to register a car as totaled in NY state? small impact ? airbag? I want to judge if it a massive accident of a small one.

My biggest worry is the airbags, I have no proof if they are OEM or not.

Note that the pannels gaps everywhere are perfect. The doors are clean, bolts are original and never been removed. Car is super clean.

It depends on the insurance company but cars are totaled when the repair value exceeds as low as ~70% and up to 100% the value of the vehicle.

There was a non-insignificant amount of damage to total that car. Also those hood bolts have 100% been removed, and the paint on the front bumper doesnt match.

    I'd walk away.

That is entirely too much for a salvaged Q5. What is so rare about it other than the tacky badge on the back?

I'm looking for a Q5 with the 3.0T, but most of them are not s-line, and doesn't get the paddle shift, and all the options.
A Q5 like this, in great shape is around 26-28k$.

I offered them 20 000$, but they said no, but they called be back to discuss

Nice one for the bumper color match.

Yeah Sq5 badge is weird, this make me think that it get rear ended aswell, and they put a random badge.

Since I keep my car for 10-15 years, I don't ming about a salvaded car, since the value at the end is almost nothing.

But I'd like it trouble free, or at least safe.

Thanks for your advices guys, I think I let it go and wait for a good one.

The fact that the S in the badge is crooked should tell you all you need to know. That's not a SQ5. Run.

    its not advertised as a SQ5, but as a S-line Q5.

the seller know that's it's not the right badge.

My avant is debaged, does't mean that its problematic.

But yeah, in that case, with the carproof report, makes me think that there's something wrong.

It's value is poor because the repairs are poor. This is not a car you want to keep long term, and your 20k offer was way too generous.

    Do not buy this car.

Is it even a s-line? Isn't it missing the wheels, headliner, and steering wheel?

I really appreciate your feedback, and from this thread discussions, I won't buy it.

saving 5-8k$, does not worth the risk.

    thanks

I'll keep searching, or go with a base 3.0T, and tune it stage 1+.

Not always true. The SQ5 I have had a tree limb that fell on the sunroof and the insurance company wrote it off. Dealer fixed it for a few grand and I bought it with a rebuilt title. No prior accidents or other issues. Insurance companies will write off cars with a dented fender or fix cars that look like an accordion. There are a lot of variables.

However I agree with everyone and say to WALK AWAY. If you want a car with a rebuilt title you need to research it very thoroughly and it needs to be priced at least 25% below retail. I saved $10,000 with the SQ5 I bought compared to retail which was 36% savings. I liked mine because it didnt get any paint work done and only the sunroof was replaced. The person you buy from needs to be up front and honest, and this dealer doesnt seem to be doing either.

The quality of that repair looks pretty sub par even in the pictures. I’d be concerned about the long term reliability, especially since you don’t know the full extent of the damages to begin with.

Couple that with the sketchy US/Canada testing/export story and I’d want to run (not walk, run) away from any transaction with that dealer.

From my understanding, a "rebuilt" title is not the same as the "totaled/salvaged" title we are discussing, two different things. If the title still is listed as "salvage" then it has not been properly inspected post repair, otherwise it would have a "rebuilt" title. Again, from my understanding.

Can you provide more info? The seller is full of shit. If they were "testing" why slap a fake badge on the rear?

Also OP, this isn't the right place to ask your overall question. Go to the tri state regional thread.

Because they weren't "testing" shit. This is your typical Montreal pepper mod. Slap badges on cars that aren't the real deal. Everyone in Montreal has an AMG, M, or S something. This shady dealer is no different. Maybe they got some sweet deals on an SQ5 Type R?

I live in an area where we have floods and hurricanes. Cars can get flooded, totaled, salvaged, reclaimed and can be easily made to look great, because there are no dents or visible damage. But, the flood water produces serious long term damage to the electrical system and corrosion issues that begin where you can't see and eventually affect the entire car.

Lots of fraud with cars that went under water, cleaned up and shipped all over the place to unsuspecting buyers.

This is the first time I've seen a new car dealer list a vehicle with anything other than a clean title. These are usually reserved for the independent used retail market (even if behind-the-scenes ownership is the same). Obviously laws/regulations vary across borders (states as well as countries), but I'm not convinced a buyer could even obtain comprehensive insurance coverage on this one. Likewise, many finance companies and warranty providers would balk.

Not to beat it do death, but OP....very glad to hear you walked from this one. I think I'd avoid that dealership entirely.

Then it's likely the limb damaged a structural roof component that was either too costly to repair to original spec or it was nearly impossible to return to original spec. I am highly skeptical that your sq5 was written off simply from a sunroof replacement.

Insurance companies don't just write off cars for fun. If it's cheaper to repair (to pre collision condition), then they do it. Writing off cars is costly.

This doesn't mean that you cant hammer the parts back into shape and make them look factory again, they just don't have, or can't guarantee, the factory strength.

    ^^ Agree 100%.

And to the OP, good that you chose to walk away from this one, but deserve a slap on the wrist for even considering it.
I came here expecting to read that you planned to strip parts for another Q5 or part it out for profit!

If it were really cheap, I'd still get a PDI on it. Sounds like it was crashed when it was still new, and probably sitting around since then. What are the actual miles? Has it been flooded?
I mean, if it were cheap enough, it would be a great build car. De-badge, wrap, stage-3 tune, whatever the hell you want to do with it. No warranty to be concerned with. Could be a lot of fun.

This doesn't mean that you cant hammer the parts back into shape and make them look factory again, they just don't have, or can't guarantee, the factory strength.

Wrong. I've been buying and selling cars for a very long time and have owned several salvage/rebuilt cars. I have two friends that fix salvage cars for a living. You are misinformed my friend. This car had a new sunroof and three spots with minor pdr. No paint work and no structural issues at all.

Also OP, this isn't the right place to ask your overall question. Go to the tri state regional thread.
All I have is the carproof, but SQive get a nice summary.

and really man? those sub forum are empty

I mean, if it were cheap enough, it would be a great build car. De-badge, wrap, stage-3 tune, whatever the hell you want to do with it. No warranty to be concerned with. Could be a lot of fun.
that was my goal, since a have a nice dd avant B7 s-line,6speeds, almost full, stage 2, low mileage, and some nice goodies, I planned to get a cheap Q5 3.0t for the wife and I , and go stage 1+ or stage 2 + pulley.
My wife does 4000 miles /year max.

And of course, a huge huge thank you for the VIN search! It's more info from what I got from audi canada.

yeah, no engine cover, no carpet, huge dent on the roof, foggy headlight, etc.

''not poor enough to buy cheap'', I will search until I found one in great shape

    thank you all

If you want a salvage Q5 get on from COPART and fix it yourself. I see Q5 with minor damage on there go for $10k all the time. They are built really well but expensive so insurance agencies total them out with barely more damage than the front bumper and headlights are broken off. Air bags still intact. Be aware there is competition for these as it is an easy fix and flip for car dealers who specialize in selling rebuilt cars.

Not to thread jack and pardon my ignorance but I have an S-line Q5 ( not SQ5 ) and it doesn't have a flat bottom wheel. I'm ill informed on the options and packages but can somebody confirm this is correct? I like the flat bottom wheel but it's not a game changer. I basically have little trust for the dealer from which I purchased the car.

i believe all 3.0T are S-line, but not all of them have flat-bottom steering wheels. i certainly don't on my 2014 3.0T, and i have the sport interior package. i forget what package comes with the flat-bottom steering wheel - maybe black optics for my year.

'3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel w/ shift paddles' is listed under the Black Optic package for a 2015 Q5 3.0T Premium Plus.

Our's is a 2.0T S-line Premium Plus and we have the flat bottom, sport seats, black headliner etc. but no exterior black optics. Missing a back up camera as well, but do have back up sensors.

Ours is a 2016 3.0T Premium Plus has the backup camera, Harmon Kardon, no black optics, standard seats I think.
Seems like that wheel might be with the sport seats, like some kind of sports package on the regular Q5 line. You get the SQ5 seats and wheel with it perhaps.

All 3.0T's received S-line emblems, S line front+rear bumper, and side skirts. Sports interior package= 3 spoke flat bottom wheel.

But MY13+14 were wonky, seems MY15-17 guides were more consistent.

MY13+14 there was an additional package- S-Line plus package- which added the 20" 5 arm rotors, 3 spoke flat bottom wheel w/ paddles, adaptive damping suspension, audi drive select, black cloth headliner, and brushed aluminum trim.

Black Optics was forced on MY14 with s-line plus pkg.

that sounds about right, b/c i actually didn't want the flat-bottom steering wheel, but wanted round 3-spoke with paddle shifters and sport seats. the sport interior package on my MY14 provided just that.

FWIW, my wife's is a '16 3.0 Premium Plus S-Line with sport interior. Has everything listed above, but with sport seats (same as SQ, but not Fine Nappa Leather), dark/matte wood trim, and no flat bottom steering wheel.

Didn't know that all Q5s with 3.0T had S-Line badging and exterior trim. Mine does, but I didn't know that exterior S-Line package was across the board if you got the 3.0T engine. It was the engine I was interested in, but the S-Line exterior goodies are nice.

In Canada this is not the case. I have been looking for an SQ5 or Q5 3.0T and most have regular seats, no FBSW and do not come with S-Line badge anywhere. S-Line package will add those options.

S-line is an option not the norm. And of course don"t forget the Black optics package.

    Exterior Upgrades

There are many exterior features in an S-Line upgrade that transform the Audi Q5 from impressive, to unparalleled:

    S-Line Audi badge
Large vent body panels with deeper skirts
    Lower profile
    Larger alloy wheels
LED or Xenon headlights and tail-lights
    Sports suspension or standard option
    Stiffer damper settings
High gloss slats for the grille and windows

    Interior Upgrades

Find your fit with an upgraded interior. The Audi Q5 is already a spacious, comfortable ride for you and the whole family, but the S-Line trim classes it up exponentially. With a maximum cargo capacity of 57.3 inches, and the 5 person seating capacity, the Q5 can comfortably transport anyone—or anything—you want. Interior S-Line feature upgrades include:

    Flat-bottom, three-spoke steering wheel
    Brushed Aluminum accents
    Upholstered-leather sports seats
Front sport seats with embroidered S-Line logo
    Perforated leather shift knob

For those that live between luxury and adventure, the S-Line upgrades bring both worlds together for a highly personalized Audi package.
