Good information here. I've been hearing that people who have swapped their rear diffuser with a carbon fiber constructed version has lost their "kick to open" trunk sensor capabilities. I guess one really needs to consider what they might lose if you want to play with carbon fiber. Personally, I dropped Sirius a few years back for online alternatives and don't think I'd miss the trunk sensor... it hardly works for me anyway since I keep my key in the same pocket as my RFID-protected wallet which happens to block the signal as well - so did my cork wallet.

BC Forged MonoBlock RS31 Series Rims
wrapped in Michelin PilotSport A/S 3+

The MonoBlock RS31 is a fully forged one-piece wheel made out of T6061 Aluminum and is designed to be a lightweight, durable, high-performing wheel which sits handsomely in BC Forge’s BC Racing Wheels portfolio. By being fully forged with the highest quality of 6061-T6 aluminum the result is a super strong, practically bulletproof wheel that’s built to last and weighs much less than your stock OE wheel.

If you decide to order a set of RS31 wheels for yourself you’ll notice that BCF offers over 20 different color options. From classic colors such as silver, chrome, or black to more bold colors such as yellow or green, there’s a color for everyone’s taste profile. And if you don’t like the default options, you could always get them custom painted such as these - coated with Porsche Dark Grey Metallic in satin/semi finish.

    Back Story
    I’ve purchased these wheels used with approximately 6,000 miles on them as part of a S4 part out. For those who may be interested on how the deal went down, here’s the back story;

Back on July 10th of 2018, Mops@Nemesis posted up a picture of a set of BCF RS31’s coated in Porsche Dark Grey Metallic in a liquid paint finish and within minutes I was making inquires to purchase a set of my own. I loved the simplicity of the wheel and felt that the color choice was perfect - it was love at first sight. Mops and I had many conversations regarding the custom paint finish, cost, and fitment and I was all set to seriously consider purchasing a brand new set of my own come early 2019.

Fast forward a couple of months; Mops mentioned he ordered an RS5 and I reached out to him to ask if he’ll be doing a part out which lead to a discussion if he was going to be selling RS31’s… lucky for me he was. We struck a reasonable deal which included the RS31’s along with a set of 034 parts which have been featured in an earlier post. Now the hardest part was waiting for the appropriate time to meet up and claim these beauties. After several weeks, my wife and I took a drove from Raleigh to the Foothills of NC to meet Mops, install the wheels, and spend a little mountain time for ourselves. Overall the experience was amazingly smooth. Mops was extremely welcoming and such a warm host, so much so that my wife has an open door for him and his family if they ever need a place to stay in Raleigh.

    Now, back to the present!

    Installation
    For those who have never installed custom wheels before there are a couple things you should know;
    1. You’ll need to make sure that the tire will fit properly. I am not an expert at this so I discuss it with people who are.
    2. You may need lug bolts. For the RS31 the OE lug bolts would have worked fine, however, we decided to use black lug bolts so they get lost in the wheel. While the silver OE ones would work, they would also stand out. It’s a matter of what you like and there are lots of color options, just make sure you order the right ones for your wheel and for your vehicle. Here’s a link to the lug bolts we used that work with the S4 and the RS31 rims.
    3. You may want to use a wheel spacer to position the wheel further out from the fender. Depending on the size of your new wheel it may or may not be flush with the side of the vehicle. Spacer can help adjust this as long as your lug bolts are long enough to accommodate them. Mops preferred a 3mm spacer in the rear while we opted to forgo the spacer - again, it’s a matter of preference.
    4. Be sure to reset your TPMS in the MMI to avoid a false air pressure alert after changing wheels.

As mentioned above, we opted for black lug bolts and no spacers for our setup. We did toy with the idea of reusing the OE bolt caps to bring in some of the Daytona Grey back into the wheels, but ultimately we decided it was too contrasty and felt it was best to keep the black bolts bare. The bolts were torqued to 98 ft-lbs.

Overall the wheel swap took about 20-minutes and cost around $16 USD. The garage we used, David’s Care Care Center in North Wilkesboro, NC, was amazingly friendly and accommodating. They gave my wife and I a tour of their garage, offered advice for places to visit and eat while we were in town, and even offered us coffee while we waited. The OE bolts were put together nicely in a ziplock bag which I thought was a nice touch vs them tossing the bolts into an empty box or having it be my problem on how I am to carry them out.

The install stress was nil since it was all handled by professionals.

    Impressions
It’s amazing how much changing a wheel can change your entire car’s appearance. When the mechanic pulled around our car it immediately looked different, almost like it wasn’t my car driving up to the front of the store but a fellow S4 owner’s. The day was raining which made everything look darker than normal, including the wheels which appeared to blend into the glossy black rubber that wrapped them. It was only until a little light caught the metallic flakes in the custom Porsche paint that brought the silky dark grey to life exposing pops of sparkle throughout the liquid smooth finish. The dark metallic grey contrasts perfectly against the rotors while the bright red calipers burst out from behind screaming “big breaks deserve attention too!” The black lug bolts vanished perfectly into the rim leaving the full 19 inches of fully forged excellence completely uninterrupted and fully showcased.

    Physically the complete wheel package is larger. The rim is an inch larger in width and 265/35 rubber increases the circumference adding about .25-inches of ride height. The changes are enough that it aesthetically looks larger than its OE counterpart. To help you comprehend the size differences I’ve provided the following comparisons;

As of writing this, the car has not been lowered and there is no certainty that I will drop it to make up for the .25 inches of additional height. This is due in part of the addition of the ECS Tuning Carbon Fiber Front Lip Spoiler added previously. The ECS lip lowers the front of the vehicle approximately an inch which has made getting in and out of certain slanted areas a real hassle. I am hoping that the additional .25” increase will help keep the bottom from scraping, but then again I could almost match the same height I was at before - and used to - by adding in some ABT HAS springs. Only time will tell which route I’ll go, and if it’s the ABT route I’m certain you’ll hear about it in this log!

    Conclusion
Transaction: Purchasing through Mops has always been a smooth process and buying second-hand was no different. The wheels were cleaned and completely detailed on our arrival. He allowed us to spend as much time as we needed to inspect the wheels and tires. In addition he was there to answer any questions we might have regarding servicing the tires, how to balance them, care for them, and more. Mops also provided us with a bottle of touch up paint in the event a stone chips the liquid finish. Overall this transaction should be the model of how must second-hand purchases should be; clean parts, friendly service, questions answered, smooth transaction. As they say on eBay, “A+++ will buy again”.

Wheels: In short, they are everything I hoped for them to be. The ride feels good and the extra meaty tires makes you feel more planted. In addition, the reduction of unsprung weight* makes a difference in the driving experience. It’s only been a few days since ownership and I’ve received positive comments from co-workers and friends who have seen the new set up. Also, it’s seems I’ve been receiving a little more attention on the road. In the past 48-hours I’ve had three cars try to “show off” driving next to me… previously I think this has happen twice since ownership. Maybe it’s simply coincidence or maybe is how one friend said, “you know she’s not stock anymore!”

Final thoughts: Highly recommend BC Forged wheels for anyone looking to reduce unsprung weight, change their shoes, or drastically change the appearance of their car. While BCF may not be as common as other household names such as BBS, they are still a premium brand focused on quality, performance, and consumer options. Personally, I love the uniqueness of the wheel and the custom paint laid on top of them. The Michelin PilotSport A/S 3+ grips well and handled great on both the rain and dry roads.

*For those who are unfamiliar, unsprung weight is the mass of the suspension versus weight supported by the suspension (known as sprung weight). Your wheels are directly connected to your suspension therefor they are a part of the suspension’s total weight (unsprung weight). Other components that are considered unsprung weight are wheel axels, bearings, hubs, tires, springs, parts of the driveshaft, and more. The benefits of reducing your wheel’s unsprung weight is an increase in acceleration - due to the reduction of rotating mass it’s easier for the vehicle to accelerate, and an increase of grip over bumpy roads - since they tend to rebound faster and be more nimble over their heavier counterparts. A negative of lighter wheels is that you can feel the road and vibrations more since you do not have as much mass to absorb the irregularities of the road.

This thread is so pro. I cannot get over it!

It was such a pleasure to hang out with you both, Louis. I'm so pleased to know all of my parts will remain on the Zine.

The wheels look fantastic! And I know they feel great too. I could instantly tell I gained a good 7 pounds per corner.

Enjoy the new goodies my man! You're going to be very pleased with the 034 additions, too. I'm sure we'll get together again before too long. A mountain drive would make for a great Sunday.

Pleasure is all on my side, Ben. We enjoyed our trip and love the new weeks. Thanks for all you do for the Audi community.

I'm totally down for a mountain drive. Would be cool to get some Audi's to meet us and make a day of it. Maybe we need to discuss this further!

    Thanks James.

Considering ABT HAS for a drop. What's stopping me is that the ECS Front Spoiler already makes my front an inch lower which causes some challenges getting around city parking lots and when we travel to the mountains. I want to do some measuring on extreme angles to see what kind of clearance I am currently working with before I start to play around with a drop. I'd hate to spend a grand to lower the car then ruin a $500+ lip my first day out. Part of me has also considered bags so I can adjust for shows, regular driving, and for navigating steep inclines. So I guess the short answer to your question is, I am still researching options.

Yabi, noticed you were getting ready to install some 034 stuff. On the transmission front, any reason you are doing the transmission mount insert but not the Street Density Transmission Mount upgrade?

Because Mops didn’t sell them to me!

    A more thorough response is I didn’t see them necessary. The reviews indicate vibrations are felt in the cabin at low RPM and idle periods. The reviews along with the following comments turned me off from installing the transmission mount insert in a daily driver;

From 034, “Installation of this upgrade will result in increased noise and vibration transmission into the cabin, especially in vehicles equipped with the Tiptronic transmission.”

Hopefully the new additions will be enough to transform the driving experience. If not, we can always add can’t we?

Curious on what your list looks like, mind sharing?

Well, your thread has been quite the inspiration.

    The spring additions are likely:
    034 Strut Brace
    034 Transmission Mount Insert
    Painted Reflectors
AWE Airbox (although concerned about the amount of time required to service the filter since I typically put about 30k miles on a year).

Contemplating the 034 rear subframe mount kit. Very interested to hear your thoughts on whether you feel these are worthwhile once installed.

I'm also very curious about the subframe mounts. Seems to be a must-have for a few people's builds, but I don't know if I'd really notice a difference or not.

Love the list Jordan. As for the AWE Intake, I like it too much that pulling it our to service the filter would be worth it. Just be sure to add the AWE Tuning Green High Performance Air Filter Cleaner and Re-Oiling Kit. The product claims that you only need to service your S-FLO Filter once every 15,000 miles or once per year, whichever is first.

For the 034 parts, I am still kicking around the idea of doing the installs myself. It appears that the average shop wants to charge $500-600 for installing them. I could order some Race Ramps and the couple missing tools for around $300, saving half the cash and now I have some new tools. What's stopping me is the uncharted territory; I never done adjustable end links and subframe mounts before. I do have a call out for another quote so I am waiting to hear from them before making any commitment.

    Regardless the way I go, I will most likely do everything at once - even if I do my own install - which will make it hard for me to tell what particular part made a change to the over handling of the vehicle. From what I understand;

Rear Sway Bar will reduce body roll and decrease understeer
Transmission Mount Insert will limit the transmission movement and reduce drivetrain slop.
Rear Subframe Mount Kit will reduce understeer and improve the effectiveness of the rear sway bar
Sway Bar End Link, Front will reduce body roll and improve the effectiveness of the front sway bar
Sway Bar End Link, Rear will reduce body roll and improve the effectiveness of the rear sway bar
The Front Strut Brace, which I've already added, improves handling by reducing chassis flex

I listed each of these out because I feel that while they all serve their own purpose yet they work together to deliver a common result - better steering and increased handling performance. For someone who uses their S4 as a daily driver, I probably don't need any of these items since I don't track my car or drive aggressively. The real test for me will be, can the average person notice the difference in city and highway driving? As for my own personal expectations, I will be pleasantly surprised if I pull out of my driveway and immediately notice an improved handling experience. Regardless if I do or don't, you all know you'll be the first to hear about it either way.

I noticed you also did not list the "BILLET ALUMINUM REAR DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT INSERT KIT". I really haven't seen any reviews on this, not even on 034's site. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Have you heard anything about the rear diff kit?

I haven't, but I looked into it. What turned me off was the install process - I simply don't have the gear to do this at home nor would I feel comfortable with doing it myself. With the other parts I listed previously I feel as if I could tackle them on my own even though there are a couple things on there that I haven't done before. With that said, if 034 wanted to sponsor the part and install costs I would be more than happy to make a write up and share my experience

How to: Jack the Front of your S4

    Who this is for
The purpose of this post is to provide a little write up on how to properly jack up the front if your S4. After scouring the internet I realized that there are no write ups or videos on how to lift the front of the S4 (or the back for that matter) and I wanted to provide something for the community for those who might need a little guidance. For those that already have the experience on jacking up the B9 S4 and securing it with jack stands, this article will provide little to no additional value. The ideal audience here are individuals that haven't had the experience of lifting an S4 or a unibody car before and are interested in doing so.

    Before you begin
If you're new to jacking your car this could seem like a daunting task - but don't worry, we'll break down each step so you can feel confident the moment you step out in your garage.

Before you begin, you'll need a couple of items.
    • A low profile hydraulic floor jack
    • Two durable jack stands
    • Two wheel chocks - recommended

Our vehicles have a curb weight of 3594 pounds so you'll want to make sure that your jack and jack stands are capable of handling the weight of the car. In this example, I am using a 2.5 ton hydraulic jack along with a jack stand kit that can support up to 6000 pounds - please use whatever equipment you feel safe with. Be sure to verify that your jack will fit comfortably under your vehicle especially if it's lowered.

    Instructions
Step 1: Find a flat, level surface for your vehicle. Make sure that the ground is solid and that you aren't on any loose gravel or slants. You'll also want to make sure you have plenty of room to maneuver around your vehicle with the jack as well as room to use the jack itself. For most, their home garage or flat driveway would be the ideal location.

Step 2: Secure the vehicle by activating the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling forward or backwards as you lift it. If you have wheel chocks, use them to secure your rear tires to prevent the car from moving while it's being jacked up.

Step 3: Locate the lift point indicated with an arrow. At ground level you’ll notice a small lip that extends down from the frame of the car, this is your lift point. When you are ready you’ll want to position your jack’s lift plate so this “line” is centered on the plate. (More on this in step 4)

Step 4: Position your jack so it slides in directly under the car. The jack should be straight and not on an angle. If the jack is on an angle it may not roll towards the car properly causing the car to fall off the jack which is never a good thing. Note, jacks roll towards the car when you use them. This allows the jack to always be position directly under the vehicle for added stability.

Step 5: Carefully jack the vehicle high enough to locate where you’ll place your jack stand; then continue to jack the vehicle until your jack stand point clears the jack stand.

When jacking your vehicle, go slow. This will allow the vehicle’s frame to adjust to it being lifted as well as allow you to assess if anything isn’t going smoothly. When I am jacking the vehicle I like to keep an eye on my jack’s position and make sure it continues to stay center of the lift point mentioned in Step 3. Additionally, I keep a jack stand near the vehicle so I have a good idea on how much I need to raise the side of the car to clear the stands.

Since the B9 S4 doesn’t have any specific place for a jack stand, you’re left with your own creativity on how you’ll keep the car supported with the jack. If you take a good look under the car you’ll notice two bolts that are bolted onto the car’s frame (identified in the photo below). This is where we’ll put our jack stand.

Step 6: Slowly lower the car onto the jack stand. Make sure that the jack stand doesn’t move out of place and that everything is lined up properly as you lower the car down onto it. Once the hydraulics are fully released, pull the jack from underneath the vehicle and verify that the car is securely being held in place by the stand.

Step 7: Test the stability of the vehicle by giving it a slight push. The vehicle should not move when you push on it. If it does, the vehicle is not secure — do not proceed any further until it is. If the vehicle is stable, you can repeat Steps 3-7 to raise the other side.

Note: If the jack stands default height is not high enough to meet your needs, you can raise the stand to accommodate them - however, if you plan to raise the entire front of the car using two jack stands it is recommended that you plant the car on both jack stands at normal height then raise the car in increments, one side at a time - sort of like “stair stepping”. This will prevent the car from sliding off the jacks or being raised to extreme angles. Be sure to adjust the stands only when they are out from under the car.

    To Remove the Stands
Step 1: By using Steps 3-5 above, raise the vehicle above the jack stand.

Step 2: Slide the jack stand out from under the car. The jack stand should come without resistance. If you feel like it’s tight, then raise the car more - do not force the jack stand out from underneath the car.

Step 3: Lower the jack until the vehicle is back on the ground and repeat on the opposite side.

Step 4: Once both sides are on the ground, move the jack and the jack stands away from the vehicle - you are done with them. Be sure to remove the wheel chocks as well otherwise you’ll have a nice surprise when you attempt to back out.

Note: If you raised the jack stands above its default height, you’ll want to use the same “stair stepping” technique listed above, but in reverse. This will prevent the car from slipping off the jack from extreme angles when lowering the car.

That’s it, you just officially jacked up your B9 S4!

I hope you enjoyed this how-to and that it helps give you the confidence you need to go out there and do some DIY work!
Special thanks goes to Aaron at DT-Power for his assistance.

    034Motorsport Transmission Mount Insert

The 034Motorsport Transmission Mount is designed to be a direct replacement for the OE transmission mount. Machined in-house using T6-6061 billet aluminium, the 034 Trans Mount helps reduce drivetrain slop that is typically observed when accelerating, decelerating, and shifting without adding any additional harshness, vibration, or noise to the cabin.

As we continue to push are vehicles with performance modifications, especially ones that increase horsepower such as piggy backs, intakes, exhausts, and others, we start to pull the car a harder which sacrifices the ride quality from within the cabin. Even with the TCU tune, I still observed drivetrain slop when accelerating hard and have always felt that shifting in the S4 was never it's strong point.

By purchasing the 034Motosport Transmission Mount Insert in Billet Aluminium, I seek to improved the driver experience by reducing drivetrain slop during hard accelerating and eliminate cabin shaking every time the Eco Start/Stop is engaged.

Will I achieve my goals? Let's give this an install and find out!

    Installation
Before you begin you'll need some tools:

    • 10mm Triple Square
    • Ratchet
    • Torque Wrench
    • Silicone Grease or Spray Lubricant
    • Blue Loctite
    • Hydraulic Jack with Jack Stands or some sort of Vehicle Lift

The 034 instructions call for an extension, but none is necessary for the installation.

Step 1: You'll need to raise the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands. If you are new to raising the front of your vehicle you can use my handy how-to posted here.

Step 2: Once the vehicle is lifted and secured, locate the OE transmission mount. It will be near the front-center of the vehicle. Use your Ratchet and 10mm Triple Square to remove the OE bolts and put them to the side - you'll be re-using them for the 034 Trans Mount install.

Step 3: Remove the OE transmission mount and put it to the side - you will no longer need this piece. This is a good time to compare the 034 build quality over the OE part.

Step 4: Apply Silicone Grease or Spray Lubricant to the legs of the 034 Trans Mount.

Step 5: Slide the 034 Trans Mount in place and push firmly up on it to ensure it's seated properly. Note, there is no specific up-right or upside-down way to insert the mount. I inserted it so the bottom of the 034 engraving is facing the rear of the car and the top of the 034 engraving is facing the front of the car - but there is no right or wrong way.

Step 6: Apply Blue Loctite to the factory bolts and re-insert them. Slightly tighten down with your Ratchet and 10mm Triple Square, switch your 10mm Triple Square to your Torque wrench, torque to 25 Nm or 18.4 lb-ft.

Step 7: Verify everything is installed properly, lower your car from it's jacks/lift, and enjoy!

    Verdict
What's insanely wild about the 034 Transmission Mount is that it's immediately noticeable the moment you start your car; when the engine comes on there is less movement felt inside the cabin. I think this is really cool since there aren't many mods that you can proclaim immediate results the moment you turn on the engine - this is one, if not the only one, mod I can say this about.

After taking the S4 for a spirited drive along with some city stop-starts it's definitely noticeable that shifting feels much smoother and the Eco Stop/Start is less a disturbance inside the vehicle. Spending a few days driving around a bit in various conditions, the overall impression is that the drivetrain fells more solid and stable. Additionally, less motion is felt inside the cabin during start/stops, hard acceleration/deceleration, and shifting. Amazing, the 034 Trans Mount achieved every expectation I set out for it. Not bad for a couple minutes of work and a few dollars investment. And to top it off, thanks to the Billet Aluminum design, the new transmission mount should outlast the lifetime of the vehicle which, in my opinion, makes this a smart buy - it does what it says, easy to install, and doesn't cost a paycheck.

    Conclusion
Priced around $80 USD, this DYI only takes only a few minutes to install and offers immediate results. If you're someone who's felt a lot of harshness inside the cabin during shifts or auto start/stops then the 034Motorsport Transmission Mount is a no-brainer. Personally, I rate this a must-have for owners that wish to increase their driving experience and cabin comfort. I'd imagine that everyone who owns an S4, regardless of performance modifications, could benefit from the 034Motorsport Transmission Mount.

Special thanks to Mops @ Nemesis for the parts - purchase second-hand as part of a part-out.

The detail you put into these write-ups is second to none. You are also selling me on almost every part as must haves. My wife will grow to hate you! lol

I, however, love every single second of these. Thanks Yabi!

Anytime! Glad you enjoyed the review. If I was you, I’d hit Mops up quickly as I think these are on sale right now. If you snatch it up on discount, then you can tell the wife you were saving money by purchasing it when it’s on sale!!! That or she can form a club with my wife that’s “against husbands who spend too much time and money in their toys”. Seriously though, for the price of two tanks of gas this one is a must have.

You want lettuce with that??? Thanks Dio! Glad you enjoyed. With the gloves, I’m just proving you don’t need a fancy shop to do these jobs at home. Use what you got!

That part is a no-brainer. I was in a funk coming from a tuned DSG trans to the ZF8 at first, but this simple cheap mod helped restore some confidence in the b9.

Great write ups! The first time jacking by S4 up was a confusing experience! Previous cars have had rubber jacking points.

Re the engine mount... any warranty implications to worry about?

Also re the wheels, do standard bolts and the rubber covers fit the BC's? Did you try it to see how it looked? Not sure if I need to buy a set of balck/grey bolts before fitting.

Like all the others have said, great write up on all the modifications! I recently purchased my Audi S4 and looking to do a few modifications to make the car better. I've already added the TCU+ tune and after seeing your post about the transmission mount, I'm going to give it a shot.

@NC_Detail - It is a simple, yet awesome mod!

@King James - None that I can think of but I am no expert in warranties. I will say the the mod is reversible so if you are experiencing problems you can swap it back with the OE.
As for the bolts, you can re-use but you'd really want to grab yourself a set of dark bolts. The OE ones clash hard against the dark rims as well as the color of the caps. If the caps were painted it might work (which is something I've thought about doing). If you're purchasing through Mops he can help get you squared away on what you need to make everything look good.

@Denali - Congrats on the new purchase! The DTE products really do bring new life to the car, I think you'll enjoy the TCU+ tune along with the 034 trans mount. Be sure to check in and let us know how you're enjoying the ride!

@Swjimboic - No problem! Now I'll wait on my commission check

Would this pad be a better place for the jack stand? It seems like its a pad on the frame rail of the car?

Hey Lonestar! If I recall correctly, what you've identified if actually a plastic protector which didn't appear to be strong enough to hold the weight of the vehicle. Below is another look at it. You'll see my hand marks on the piece as I was originally thinking the same as you - but I can double check the next time I jack her up.
