just finished the MSF course. been looking at craigslist for bikes. anyone else on here ride?

i was looking at an R3 or a sv650

Yes, that was taken at ORP in Grass Valley OR.

And getting instruction and coaching on a track is the BEST possible thing you could have for your riding. You're wearing full gear, with coaches training you. There's no cars, traffic or other street distractions. The course is very predictable. It's the best possible learning environment. The MSF course is better than nothing, but honestly is a joke when it comes to real world riding experience.

oh yeah i hear you. didnt even get over 15mph in that class so i cant believe they think your ready to get on the road lol.

maybe ill look into a track class once i get more confident. how much do the classes run? im guessing you tow your bike to the track too huh? i dont have space for a trailer lol

IIRC they're usually a couple hundred or so?

They do track days at PIR, which is easy to get to. Once you're there the only thing you'd really have to do is put painter's tape on your mirrors, lights, blinkers. Then you'd be good to go. So you could certainly ride there. Keep it in mind. It really develops your skill and experience.

i definitely will keep the track day in mind. getting excited to find a bike and start riding once spring/summer is in full effect lol. i finished the msf class on sunday, and it was a down pour the entire class. had some old dirt bike gloves on and my fingers were purple haha

I also own a super duke 990, I have always seemed to be pulled in by KTM’s. Have you checked out a RC390? I’d really like to ride one, looks like a fun little bike and the price is good.

my friend actually has a rc390 that he wants to sell. i just know out of all the "entry" 300 bikes that was the most aggressive. and probably the most expensive for my insurance lol.

I rode and instructor with 2-fast years ago, then my wife too my balls away.

Very happy to see that you did a MSF course. They teach you useful information which apply to real world scenarios. Be safe out there as it's not YOU I dont trust, it's OTHER DRIVERS.

ya my fiance wasnt too excited about it. but i think shes coming around a little bit after i actually bought some gear and took the class

I live in the Seattle area and commute on my bike most of the time - rain or shine (just not snow).

Never been on a bike till I was about 26 years old and then took the MSF course and have been riding for over a decade now. Love it!!!

I definitely recommend starting with something smaller and lighter in the 250/300 cc class. Those bikes are a ton of fun to ride and hold their value well.

I've heard nothing but great things about track days, and would love to do one myself, but haven't gotten to it yet. If you have the opportunity definitely go for it!

yeah, i have some points on my license, i asked my insurance guy for a quote to add a brand new r3 on my policy and with comp/collision it was 1400 for the year lol. so im going to check out progressive or something. if i get something used i probably wont do comp.

I love the big Ninja :) It has lots of torque in every gear. The suspension is great - I had it set for my weight by KFG which was one of the best bang-for-the-buck "mods".

I've tried a few bikes before buying it and unlike all others this one just felt "right". I had a Buell XB9 prior to this one (and a Ninja 250 prior to that) and the Buell was great for many reasons but getting up there in age and I couldn't justify paying over $1k for a suspension rebuild. I had lower back problems for many years and switching from the Buell with its shot suspension to a new N1k was a huuuuuge improvement. I can now ride for hours and my back doesn't hurt 5 minutes in.

On a different note, I highly recommend getting a bunch of insurance quotes from different companies. For me they differed wildly for reasons I can't possibly comprehend. I'm talking like $400 / year from company A vs $3200 from company B (or whatever the actual numbers were). BTW, my Buell was the best at around $90 / year, not including comprehensive which I never bothered with.

ya i know what you mean on the insurance. i did it online for some companies and they quoted me 5k for the year. but if i call its 500? i think some companies categorize the r3 as a sport bike so its automatically higher.

im looking at 2004+ sv650 so hopefully since its older its not too expensive.

what are your thoughts on not taking comp/collision. the bike is going to be <$2k and i have a garage at home and at work so im not too worried about it getting stolen.

My math is:
- worst case is that I die and comp insurance won't matter (I have decent life insurance)
- I don't die and my bike gets stolen or totalled. I don't think this will happen and if it does I can afford the $8k or whatever-my-bike-is-worth-now hit.
- I crash and the damage is worth a few thousand. More likely but between the deductible and the money I've paid in over the years most likely I'll just break even.
- Nothing serious happens and I've avoided paying a bunch of money into a horrible industry.

Given that I can afford the risk I am betting on the last option.

i just got quoted $166 for the year with no comp/collision. I had the same line of thought as you. not worth it when its 1100 for the year with comp and collision.

Ultimately the sv650 is more of a fun bike than the r3 imo

When I had a GSX-F 650 (or was it a GSX 650F?), the insurance company quoted me MORE than a 600cc sports bike because the GSX-F was a 650cc motorcycle.......lol
I had to show them the hp specs and differences of a 600cc sports bike and the sport touring GSX-F 650 for them to lower the amount. So that's another thing to look at when getting quotes.
