    S5 Sportback and car seats?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In what seems like a life time ago (before kids were ever a thought in our minds) I owned a 2011 S4 and loved it. Over the years, several vehicles later and also two kids later, I'm wanting to get back into an Audi. I really love the looks of the new S5 SB but am hesitant on pulling the trigger due to space concerns in the back seat. Anyone with a SB happen to have some car seats back there? We currently have one rear facing and one forward facing seat and I’m thinking I may need to at least wait until both seats are forward facing. I would love to see some photos of other’s backseats to see how much room there really would be as well as hear some real world feedback.

    Thanks!

The car doesnt have any lack of space in the back, so I doubt fit would be a problem per-se, maybe fit of the car seat to the seat shape is an issue.

Can you spare your car seat (rear facing) for a few hours to head to a dealer? I'm sure they would let you try it out.

Yeah, absolutely can take them to the dealership to try out the fit but was hoping for some real world feedback to see how it’s been for people on a daily basis. May just have to at least try to see how they fit at the very least and go from there.

Hmm, it could be a little tight but I think a lot depends on how tall you and significant other are (how far back are front seats).

I got the car right after my kiddo turned 6 and I transitioned her to a simple bottom pad booster. The simple bottom booster works awesome in the car but that might be a few years off for ya.

I agree, take car seats to dealer, if they want to sell a car they will let you try the fit. On another note, I think the S5 SB makes for one hell of a dad mobile.

    Sub'd.

I have two kiddos, one in a front facing and one in a booster.
Both seat are Recaro so they are not too bulky and fit nice in my A6 right now, but I'm set on ordering a RS5 SB when available.

I would go to the dealer and use a S5 SB as a tester, but I'm 1.5 hours away.

I'm 5'8" and my wife is 5'3" so we wouldn't have the seats too far back I recall when I had my Merc C400 it was a tad tight when my first daughter was in a rear facing seat.

Yeah, booster seats are a ways off for us. Especially since both girls are rather petite.

There better be a ton of space back there! It's one of the main reasons I'm replacing my S3 with an S5 SB. With my 4 year old in his Recaro seat, he was running out of legroom in the S3 even with the passenger seat all the way forward.

The S3 is truly tiny in the back, I had my S5 in for service and was sitting in an RS3 in the showroom - when I got in the back I found myself incredibly cramped. The weird part is that I have a Mk7 R and comparably its nice in the back seat, more spacious and less claustrophobic.

Yeah it's redic. I assume the S3/RS3 hatch would be a bit better, but alas. The S5 Sportback will work for now...until we finally get an RS 4 Avant. *doesn't hold breath*

I've had both. The MK7 feels so much more spacious in the back seat. The S3 is a cool car, but I wish I would have listened to Mrs. Mop and swapped the GTI for the R, and not the S3. I still yearn for another MK7... even a base GTI.

I have two Diono Radian RXT forward facing seats in the back of my S5 SB and they fit just fine - I have a pic on my IG (@s5ecific). Never had the infant rear facing seat in. Considering the space, i think it would be a tight fit.

Thanks! It does look like forward facing won't be an issue at all.

I also have two Clek froward facing seats and it's got lots of room. S5 SB has more leg room than my SQ5, but! SQ5 is easier to put the kids in and out. Lol.

The MK7 definitely more spacious in the back the a S3. I deal with it on a daily basis getting my 8 month old son in and out in a car seat.

I have a 2018 S5 SB and I a Graco4Ever car seat that is in Rear Facing mode right now and from what I've found it may take up the least amount of space compared to others. In forward facing mode its a non-issue with space to spare. With rear facing it gets very tight as most car seats are very long when facing backwards and I cannot sit comfortably with the car seat behind me (I'm 6'3") but will easily fit behind the passenger seat with my wife up front. Since you only have one rear facing seat you should be good but you should certainly go to the dealer and see for yourself.

Probably a little late but in case someone else is looking for this info, there's a Canadian car journalist who always sticks a car seat in the back, both front & rear facing and shows/takes measurements.

Unfortunately this review is an S4 not S5, but the rear leg room is nearly identical between the 2 models.

That is definitely not the case. There was significantly more rear legroom in my B8 S4 than in my B8.5 RS5.

I haven't sat in both models, I'm going off of the spec sheet. The sportback and the sedan are within 0.5" in the rear.

So take whatever he says in the video and subtract 0.5" .

First - sorry for the delay. I had a death in the extended family and was out of town. I have pics, now! I usually have the car seat in the middle (where my son has more leg room) but I moved it to the side for these pics.

First, the car seat behind me with my seat in my regular reclined position:

Then I moved my seat up a bit to where I can still drive semi-confortably and give more legroom to the rear:

Seat is still in the semi-comfy spot, just took a shot from the other side:

Thanks for the photos, that helps out a ton! It does look like I will definitely have to take the seats to the dealership and give them a try as I can see how leg room for the kiddo could easily be compromised depending upon my seating position and how comfortable I want to be.

My condolences to you and your family, btw. :(

Ditto. Thanks for the photos. Our Recaro harness booster are not that big and will fit perfectly. Now just patiently waiting for orders to commence on the RS5 SB!

Also, my condolences to you and your family.

Do you think it would fit 3 across?

It will not easily fit 3 across. With two normal size child seats in the back there is not enough room for the center armrest to fold down. Some companies offer very narrow seats made specially for 3 across seating but I doubt even those would work--and it would be nearly impossible to load the middle kid with the roofline.
