UniConnect & Parallels on a Mac

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did a search & didn't find any substantial evidence of use cases, but.....

Has anyone had success using a Mac/Parallels set up with the UniTronic Uniconnect cable? UniTronic couldn't recommend this approach but mentioned that others have successfully flashed/re-flashed/logged using a VM or running Parallels on a Mac.

I'd love to exhaust this approach before running over to Best Buy & picking up a PC laptop for a couple hundred bucks.

Is a tablet a possibility? I am heading toward Uniconnect for my K04 tune, but only have a mac as well. I run my VCDS on a Windows 10 tablet that I won in a charity event a couple of years ago without an issue, so I have been curious if it would suffice for the Uniconnect load.

    Here's the link: https://www.walmart.com/ip/NuVision-...&wl13=&veh=sem

EDIT: I don't think this tablet would work, since it only has 2GB of RAM sorry

UniTronic recommends, at a minimum, a processor speed of 1.5 GHz OR 4GB of RAM or higher. Granted, I'm assuming you could use the tablet but at a slower rate (not sure if it will crash) & assuming you can use the micro USB to USB adapater.

Yeah, you're right and must have quoted me before I edited my post. Hopefully someone will chime in with some Mac success, so I don't have to use my work laptop.

I can't speak on this issue regarding Uniconnect, but when I ran parallels on my MacBook pro for VCDS, I would almost always be unable to read, scan, etc. I tried installing, reinstalling, update drivers and everything for parallels and windows but no dice.

I ended up using bootcamp to run either Windows or Mac separately, worked like a charm since .

FWIW I know a lot of the guys (including myself) who run the EPL tune use HP Stream 8 tablets that you can buy refurbished from Walmart for roughly $75. I also use the micro USB to USB adapter (OTG). I ended up going that route because all I have at home are Apple products. Sure would be nice if the flash at home tuners figured out how to be Apple iOS compatible............

That's good to know. It would be awesome if the tune-from-home companies could ensure that their flash software worked well with Windows running via Bootcamp on Mac.

There's no reason it wouldn't. Its the same as running windows on any other computer.

With Bootcamp, using Windows on a Mac should work 100%. I would go this route if flashing the actual ECU.

If you’re just using VCDs, you can get by using a VM. (Virtual machine) I personally use VirtualBox and have never had an issue with a Windows 10 guest OS. Just be sure that you enable the USB cable from the devices list so it gets pass through to the VM. I imagine using Parallels is very similar.

In theory I agree, but I do not believe EPL will vouch for it. So if I go that route and run into problems, after their telling me it's not guaranteed to work, I'm out on my own. I cannot speak for Unitronic as I have no experience with them.

I know, a $100 tablet takes care of the issue, and I spent that much on alcohol last weekend, but I guess I'm just stubborn.

It really depends on the hardware, usually the pass through usb device is emulated and thus have a different driver. It might or might not work. Your safest bet is to run boot camp so everything is running under native driver. I'm an engineer working in virtual machine team in one of the big cloud company:)

I ran boot camp on my MacBook. Only issue is how much storage you got in order to partition. Ran good too along with VCDS as well. I’m going to just buy a used chrome book or cheap one and call it good.

I tried to use VCDS using VMware Fusion and it did not work. Always ran into connectivity issues. Ended up getting a cheap ass Dell and it works perfectly. Would definitely skip any sort of Virtualization app on top of Mac OS.

I use vmware and run my bootcamp partition that way unless I need to specifically be booted to Windows. No problems with VCDS.

I ran windows on boot camp for a while. It works without issue. I got tired of doing that and broke down and bought an inexpensive windows based laptop from Best Buy for $200. It remains my dedicated unit for car stuff.
