    HELP - Suerglue on paint

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yes-I'm an idiot. Regardless, anybody have suggestions to remove dried superglue from back bumper paint? I know there are different remedies that are extensive but does anyone have any simpler ideas using Goo Gone or something of that nature?

    Thanks.

Acetone will do it. But it will also dissolve many other things. Including paint. And bumpers. Be careful.

3m glue remover. if its a chunk. then you might need to use a plastic razor blade type and then some glue remover.

I am planning on buying 3M adhesive remover and using that to see what I can do. Seems to be the generally accepted, not too-invasive, way to do it.

Goo Gone may work but ensure you wash the paint with soap and water and rinse with clean water immediately afterwards.

You might try brake clean as it works on paint with no harmful effect.
Brake Clean NOT Brake Fluid !!!!!!

whatever you use, if you need to use it for an extended period of time, you may want to use some kind of q tip applicator.

Check a hobby shop that sells "RC grade" cyanoacrylate (aka: CA or super glue). They should have a debonder specifically for CA. Check the ingredient list, because some of those do contain acetone, but some do not.

As Waxxon said, I've had good luck in the past with 3M adhesive remover spray and plastic razor blades.

    Relevant excerpt from togwt1980.blogspot.com:

    Cyanoacrylate (Superglue)
Ethyl cyanoacrylate (ECA) C5H5NO2- Loctite® Super Glue is virtually 100% ECA. Cyanoacrylate is an acrylic resin that is moisture cured (anionic polymerization) and forms a strong bond almost instantly.

One of the easiest ways to remove Cyanoacrylate (Superglue) adhesive is to use Acetone nail polish remover. Acetone dissolves these types of adhesives, but use caution using acetone to clean Cyanoacrylate adhesive that is stuck to plastic or polymer clear coat; and avoid hard rubbing Acetone can also cause damage to plastic surfaces or even melt smaller pieces (test on an inconspicuous area first).

Most hobby shops and some hardware stores carry some sort of Cyanoacrylate remover. In fact, one of the most popular products is actually branded: Super Glue Remover (check to see if they contain Acetone).

Man, I would try acetone as a last resort and be very careful. Maybe test a spot under the carpet first.

I've used the 3M adhesive remover in combination with some light buffing to remove glue from badges on other cars. That is probably a decent first application.

In the meantime, be careful with the Kragle.

Made this post just cause I wanted to say Kragle.... master builders unite.

Be careful if you try acetone. I think it will chemically "etch" the paint and you will be left with a cloudy, rough feeling spot. I would try a razor blade to remove the highest spots and then try to use a medium abrasive polish to see if you can level it down to the paint. You will probably then need to buff out the entire area to make sure any micro marring of the paint is removed. Good luck!
